New to this Mod -Help Please

Post by Rams30 »

I have downloaded the easy install MOd, the graphics, sprites, screen change files.

I tried to drag the new system.xbg file to the UFO data file and replace old the system.xbg file. It wants a password. I have no idea what to do.

Thanks in advance

I'll assume you mean Bman's mod?

When is it asking for a password?  What OS are you playing this on?

(I've only been playing the game for a day or so, so if anyone with immense amounts of UFO mod install knowledge is around feel free to take over.)

Yes it is bmans.

It occurs when I aatempt to drag the new system.xbg into the data folder with the old system.xbg file in it.

I have no Idea on the appropiate steps to install this mod. So there may be things I need to do before trying the above.

Thanks for any help

Well, the way I remember doing it was:

1) Downloaded and installed the latest patch from Matrix.
2) Copied the media pack for Bman's into the data directory.
3) Renamed my system.xbg.
4) Copied the new one over it.

Hmmm.  No password prompts.

Did you install the application under a different username?  Are you using Vista?  When it asks you for the password... well, can you provide a screenshot or something?

Cheers.

First Thanks for all your help.

I am running XP. I did not re-name the old system.xbg file.

I should give that a try.

I have downloaded the Mod, multi-media package, enhanced sprites, loading screens, and true_night mod.

I am not sure how all these are loaded as well.

Thanks,

Steve

No problem.  I had a bit of pain myself in getting mods installed, so I know the frustration.  Sorry for taking so long in getting back, I had a busy weekend.

I'd concentrate for now on the multi-media package and Bmans.  There are ways to get multiple mods installed, but I'm not sure they're pretty.

How did renaming the file work out?

About the password -- did you install the application as a different user?  Could be some bizarre permissions thing.

I will run the rename test tomorrow afternoon. I am getting a new desktop and will do a software reload with the patches beforehand.

I will focus on bmans easy install, rename the old system.xbg and try the extract to the data file. I presume I just extract to the data file for the multi-media package as well?

I will keep you posted.

Thanks

yes for each of the files you download, they all come as .ZIP files.  extract each file into the UFOET\data folder.  If you get them all, your data folder should have stuff like:

beousounds\
TacticalMod\
Loading\
gui.new\
system.xbg (about 10MB)

I can't remember what else.  The only one that is different is the Optimized EXE.zip.  This one you want to extract to the main UFOET folder where UFO_ET.exe lives.  Then you want to run the game using this new .EXE, called UFO_ET_truenight.exe or something like that.  When you use the new EXE instead of UFO_ET.exe, you can play with the True Night Mod enabled without any performance costs.

Make sure you are using Bman v4.07 mod.  I quit updating the mod at v4.04 and Coasty has made a few new versions since then that fixed some bugs.  See this post I made earlier for more details:

good luck and have fun.

I'm glad it all worked!  If you get a chance maybe you could let us know what was going on in case this comes up again.

About the improvements -- agreed.  I tried the game without mods -- sort of by accident -- and REALLY missed all of the stuff that Bman added.  Bman's mod is amazing.

The only thing I can think of is that I did not rename the old system.xbg file before doing the extract. Perhaps I tried to drag the the new system.xbg into the data folder with the old system.xbg in there (with the original name) that caused the password request.

I am just glad that it is working now.

Thanks
