LRCAP

Post by HansBolter »

Perusing the manul this morning I moticed this: "Long Range CAP: The air unit's aircraft will fly combat air patrol over all friendly units in a hex other the one containing the air unit's base."

Does this maen LRCAP will NOT intercept missions hitting their base hex? It doesn't seem like that is what I have experienced. I have definitely seen LRCAP fly over nearby hexes such as LRCAP from Lunga flying over Tulagi and Russell Island, but I believe I have set LRCAP in PM and seen it fly over TFs in the PM hex unloading at the port.

The reason I ask is that I have typically used LRCAP as the default mission task to get 100% CAP with no escort rather than giving an Escort order with CAP set to 100%. If I want coverage over my own base do I need to go the route of Escort/100%CAP or will LRCAP cover my own base as well as covering any incoming TFs in nearby hexes, dependent, of course, on having enough squadrons to cover multiple hexes.

Using "Target" will specify exactly WHERE you want the fighters to fly LRCAP, even for moving TF's. If you don't specify a target for the LRCAP the planes may decide to go cover a random TF moving through the area. Whenever I want full CAP coverage at a base I set its fighters to LRCAP but set the "Target" as its own base. That'll keep the LRCAP from "wandering" to cover any TF's nearby. Setting "Sweep" or "Escort" missions only allow up to 90% of CAP.
