AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/16/42

TF 1 encounters mine field at Kwajalein (79,79)
Japanese Ships
DD Yunagi, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
[:D] Do it like Swift! [:D] I´m copying my Allied opponent Swift in my other PBEM! The new arriving subs that were transferring from the West Coast to Australia to support the failed defense of Timor left the West Coast loaded with mines. One went to Kwajalein and it´s nice to see the DD is heavily damaged. Kwajalein is only a level 3 port but I would be really lucky if the DD would sink after only one mine hit disbanded the turn after the hit...

Day Air attack on Ledo , at 36,25
Japanese aircraft
Ki-21 Sally x 79
Ki-49 Helen x 23
Ki-46-II Dinah x 5
Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 2 destroyed, 18 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 11 damaged
Allied ground losses:
67 casualties reported
Guns lost 3
Airbase hits 9
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 30
Aircraft Attacking:
9 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet
our recon flights over the bases in Norhtern Burma showed 1) units (probably base forces) at most bases now - means no more training as I don´t want to lose my aircraft bombing at 2000 ft, 2) a cap that dropped from around 80 fighters every day to only 20+ and 3) bombers at Mandalay. This alerted us, there will be a probable strike on one of our bases in India and we were exactly right to move the 150 fighter / fighter bombers from Ledo further back, outside of IJA bomber range. Hortlund bombs an empty airfield (this is annoying as he saw a fat, dark aircraft symbol when he ordered the strike - I know how that feels as the Japanese, acting always late due to the game design). In return, a dozen Japanese aircraft were lost all over the map.
The Japanese are now in a good lead again regarding aircraft losses and of course shipping losses, in both numbers of ships lost AND points for ships lost (even though the Repulse was worth some 190 points).[:D]

Day Air attack on 14th DAF Base Force, at 19,47

Allied ground losses:
55 casualties reported
Aircraft Attacking:
24 x Ki-51 Sonia bombing at 2000 feet
unfortunately those attacks on the base forces lost somewhere deep behind the enemy lines will create some very high experienced IJA dive bombers that will surely act as ASW aircraft in the future (I want to point out that I don´t have a problem with his training at all). I guess many subs will be damaged by 100 kg AP bombs then. In the last couple of turns THREE [8|] of my subs in the area between Timor and Kendari were hit by 250kg AP bombs dropped by Helens (looks like a very high exp Helen sentai is operating out of Kendari now). One sub had 93 float dam after the hit and was lost, the other two will survive with sys dam between 30-45. Now I know what Hortlund meant when saying he won´t need DDs for ASW he will rely on air ASW and the half dozen APDs... [:(] We have lost 3 subs so far, still a very impressive result when thinking of 60 ships sunk by subs... (I have to count the sub kills at some point but it´s SO annoying to do that)

RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy
After clicking the second time into my opponent´s AAR today I´ve changed the thread title of my AAR as we both had our niknames at the end of our AAR titles. I both times entered and 2 times later of course left Steve´s AAR and both times immediately sent him a PM that I entered his AAR by accident but didn´t read anything.
New AAR title is only "The rant goes on..."

my only 2 B17 BGs, one with 48 bombers, the other with 64. Both are fully stocked with aircraft but we won´t see anytime soon all being combat ready. I also have recognized many fighter groups that were flying a high percentage of Cap have a lot of damaged planes. Not as severe as in Nikmod 8.x but combat readiness goes down to 60% in some squadrons. We torched nearly a dozen aircraft today, but also lost2 B-17s (replacement rate is only 16 so every B-17 lost is a little tragedy). Steve´s answer to my first long range bombing strike was: grrrrrrrrr.... [:D]
Our 4E bombers carry only 6x500lb bombs in Nikmod but we have 13 hexes range and it´s good to be able to take out the war to bases further away, so my opponent has to spread out his fighters a bit. A Wellington carries 50% more bombs than my 4Es and B-25/B-26 carry also 6x500lb bombs. I won´t bomb resources/oil/HI on Japanese occupied Allied territory. We don´t have a HR on that and I didn´t tell Hortlund but that´s something I just don´t like. I will use subs and aircraft to kill his ships and take the bases back. I don´t like those kind of 200+ bomber attacks to kill a ressource center in two days...

a fighter sweep, possible preparing a follow on bomber strike? We have a huge bomber armada at Derby (8 hexes to Koepang) but no fighters, as putting them into the air would just mean we would put training targets for the IJN Zeroes into the air. A bomber strike on Derby could be fatal for us. All our bombers are set to 100% naval search so I don´t know if they are treated like sitting on the airfield when the strike comes in - we will soon see. "Normally" I would expect most of them being out on naval search if the strike comes in but in WITP you never know... Dozens of flak guns at Derby, this base should be treated as a flak base as we moved in a lot of base forces to have decent aviation support and of course they all have a lot flak guns too!

TF 1029 encounters mine field at Darwin (36,84)

we spotted an IJN sub at Darwin so we thought it could be laying some mines and we found some...

TF 1024 encounters mine field at Koepang (28,77)
Allied Ships
CL Emerald, Mine hits 1, on fire
we send a CL to Koepang to deal with the Japanese ships there and we hit a mine entering the hex. Something I see very rarely but I´m not surprised... [8|] Either my attacking ships take a torp from a DD from 2000 yards or we hit a mine...

Allied aircraft
PB2Y Coronado x 34
Allied aircraft losses
PB2Y Coronado: 7 damaged
Aircraft Attacking:
10 x PB2Y Coronado bombing at 11000 feet
we thought this would surprise the IJN as we spotted several ships at Palmyra (probably carriers for raiding my shipping lines also). We planned this attack carefully, using the best pilots, bringing in all Coronados we have from all over the map. In the end for nothing but misses and 3 Coronados lost. Well, it was worth a try, perhaps the carriers will be taken back to Kwajalein (if there are any at Palmyra)...

Leaking Cap from Diamond Harbour where we have some 120 P40s on Cap. I HATE IT!!! [:@] One of the stupid (sorry) game desicions I will never understand. I have yet to see leaking cap being an advantage for the defender. It´s just stupid. I don´t want to cap the hex next to my base, or even two hexes away... I have set the range to 0 so at least this should stop leaking cap but as we know it doesn´t. STUPID!!! STUPID!!! This way my opponent can kill all my 120 fighters without having to fear to lose more than 5 aircraft... STUPID!!!

RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy
We enter May and the British are now allowed to upgrade their squadrons! [&o] We´re now using the Hurricane IIb in all our figther(bomber) units and the Wellington III in our bomber units. The Vildebeest units are upgraded to Swordfish. Some Beaufort I are available as well. A really important date. From now on we will have some 120 Wellington IIIs. Coupled with the 48 B-25 in India we can do some hard strikes at lightly to medium defended targets.

another hunter killer group is around and are attacked. We sink a PG and in return our sub is sunk immediately. 2 real hits by the PGs and 1 real hit by the APD. I really wonder if there´s some magic date or why the PC/PG/MSW suddenly act as real sub killers with every engagement a sunken sub... [8|] It´s not their exp. they are surely in the low 50s at best and won´t get to 60 anyway. I used PGs for years and they didn´t reach 60... The probability to achieve suddenly so many real hits must be really low, so all I can say is that the Japanese are really lucky at the moment. My subs are moved every day of course and 80% aren´t even spotted - nevertheless they get moved...
Hortlund told me today that he´s mostly only using one escort for his TFs as every escort is a waste of efforts and I just can say that this is really the case at the moment. The single escort is enough to either make the sub not attack or the sub is even attacked by the single escort - as we´ve seen so far. And this has been the experience of Hortlund in other games too. I have to say if this is really working in the GAME then we´ve discovered another WRONG of the game...

another hunter killer group is around and are attacked.
I have to say if this is really working in the GAME then we´ve discovered another WRONG of the game...

the single escort for the TFs is working nearly 100% of the time... did we really discover another weak point of the game? In reality a TF should be far safer when escorted by a couple of escorts, but in this PBEM it seems one is easily enough - like Hortlund said it would work normally as good as more escorts... it would really be a shame...[:-]

Night Time Surface Combat, near Amboina at 39,73
Japanese Ships
PC Toshi Maru #3, Shell hits 6, on fire, heavy damage
PC Tama Maru #8, Shell hits 8, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
PC Shonon Maru #15, Shell hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
PC Takunan Maru #2, Shell hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
Allied Ships
CL Enterprise, Shell hits 1
I have no idea why those PCs (that sunk a S-class sub a week before) were still at Amboina. I´m flying recon with B-17s every day (to several bases in this area) and every day this TF was still in the hex. So CL Enterprise moved out to take revenge for our sunken sub (something Boise tried to do also before, but she failed). The Japanese TF was surprised and the PCs shot to pieces. I expect all four to be lost. Well, one sunk during the combat replay, the other were hit with 6 inch shells. 3x6 inch shells should finish a PC far away from the next bigger port I hope. So the day started off with a success. CL Enterprise lost it´s only small calibre AA mount and has now an AA rating of 62...

It looks like Hortlund hasn´t been impressed by Nikmod flak so far... this after losing 30 dive bombers in one day over Singapore... [:D] a dozen Sallies were shot down in the end, we lost 2 C-47 of which we get more than enough every month... wonder why this is the second unescorted strike, but I refuse to put up cap as this would just attract 100 Zeroes on a sweep... better to let the bombers attack an uncapped base to see our flak chewing them up...

we spot nearly 90 aircraft at the level 4 airfield but seem not to be able to torch more than a couple on the ground. Probably all are out on nav search. 2 Zeroes are destroyed on the ground, no B-17 is lost but morale is dropping to the bottom... another 4 Zeroes are lost flying LRCAP to Lautern this turn, there must be a convoy coming in or it already arrived at Lautern. A pity my British CL isn´t able to reach Lautern within the next two turns. And I need to replenish my torps first...
