Virus!

Post by Goblin »

My Norton just picked up and destroyed a virus:

JS Exception.Exploit virus -666bytes. Listed as A3[1] jpg.

Suggest everyone check their systems! Norton lists it as common, and I have no idea where it came from!

It's a JavaScript (hence the "JS" designation) exploit of a flaw in Internet Destroyer, er...Explorer. MS messed around with Sun's Java code and opened up some holes which this exploit uses - it *can* run simple commands on your system.

To fix the hole, you need to update your MS Virtual Machine from the MS website. And use Netscape/Opera/etc. which are not vulnerable to MS's errors.

It's most often spread via IRC channels, but can infect you when you visit a website.

I agree its javascript, but I disagree that it was microsoft tweaking suns code...since java and javascript have nothing to do with each other.... as I recall javascript was created by a little known company called Netscape I believe...although I could be wrong...

It's pretty common, it usually pops up from visiting WAREZ sites. They leak in from webpages and get stored in the temporary internet files folder provided they antivirus doesn't catch it and quarantine it first. The only harm it does if it infects your system is that it changes your Internet Explorer startup page. Very easy to clean.

Heh, it should be watertight to use Opera then. Has anyone using it gotten ANY Javascript to work?

Not that I mind, I can post messages here, and I can use my mail. :)

I'm unsure, but I personally wouldn't take any chances.
