A step to Far?
Well at least for me perhaps, I have had a hard time with the learning curve of the current WitP and I am only a fair player against the AI because I have a hard time each turn in dealing with all the stuff you have to do. I have never been a person who is good at paying attention to detail. I always miss somethings.
This does not keep me from playing the game but at times I wish there was a way to play with a little less detail.
SO I am looking forward to the new stuff but at the same time it is possible that I could reach my detail/complexity level. All the new units, bases larger map etc has me a little scared.
It might work better if I could find a player who is like me (a bit disorganized, chance taker, not always logical, what happens if I do this it might be a real riot.
I just hope my disorganized mind can deal with all the new stuff. Am I alone in this problem? If you not that good or just want to have a wide open game let me know

RE: A step to Far?
This game definitely has a steeeeeeep learning curve ... I guess for me, I started playing UV (Uncommand Valor) back when it first came out, when was that, 2001? And then switched to WITP the day it came out, and I've also spent a good bit of time with WPO (War Plan Orange). So I've been "learning" since 2001 or about 7 years now. I can certainly remember giving up in frustration a time or two with my early attempts at WITP, but time cures all and eventually I learned how to manage the vast detail in WITP. But it probably takes at least a month or so of steady play to get past the early hangups. And managing Japanese production is probably another level of learning. But there are quite a few people who have made the climb and survived, so Im sure you can to. At least you can know that it can be done!

RE: A step to Far?
Ys I have a friend who plays at the hard level. Many years ago I was a fair sineger/songwriter and attempted to teach a young man who wanted to play but no matter how hard he tried it just was not in him. He got in to drugs like LSD,and others like it and ended up at a psych hospital. My point is that WitP pi=pushes my ability to understand and play even fair against the AI (lord know what will happen in PBEM game) ans I can't seem to handle everything as I have found leaving anything to the computer is a disaster waiting to happen
I cant get the PI to last through Jan 42 or Singapore not much longer. Most of the Dutch Indies is gone I do manage to get Guad. going and build wake up to a very strong place. The day after the game came out TILL TO DAY. I do manage to build Wake Is and GUad. THERE MUCH ONE MUST DEAL WITH EVEN AGAINST THE ai. Now it going to be bigger with more features, planes, guns units I am just scared I will handle it and be back at square one again And It might be to much for me like my guitar =playing friend (SIGH) and have to give up something I love because it is just to much for me.

I will get the expansion and attempt to play but I don't think I will ever get brave enough to try a PBEM game unless I can find some other lost soul. Our some willing to at least explain how to approack the turn orders phasw, Heck I don't eve knw how to finde the map locations using X,Y axis numbers
I admire all those here on the forum with logical and intelligence to deal with a game such as the. I fear no mater how much I try the game will always be a bit behond me and any human opponet would have a good laugh

In all the years i have played games such as this WitP has put near the edge of what I call the info overload dificulty to comprened the scope of a game of this size and scop. So no matter how hard try and ahow much I love it like my guitar playing friend it just may be to much for me.

RE: A step to Far?
There was a thread about who plays the AI and even here, the majority of people do.  Matrix estimates that about 80% of players only play the AI or play the AI most of the time.   There is a PBEM bias on the forum.  I think sometimes the AI only players are made to feel like second class citizens.  If you are more comfortable playing the AI, don't feel pressured to do anything else.  I've had the game about 18 months and I still only play the AI.

A lot of the improvements with AE do not make the game any harder to play, for example, the order of battle is a lot more accurate.  Some make it easier, such as task force plotting.  No more micromanaging task forces to steer them around enemy bases.  Some things are going to take a bit of learning.

I think that there might be some advantages for a novice player in AE.  Experienced players of the base game have learned playing patterns based on what the game provided and the quirks of the game.  They will have to unlearn a lot of techniques that a novice never learned.

I wouldn't sweat about the bigger map though.  There are more bases, but at any given point in time, most bases are behind the lines (on one side or the other) and probably aren't that big a concern.  The changes to resources and production do require the Allied player to manage their economy a bit more than the base game.

This game is a tough one to learn.  I think it is quite rewarding in the end.  This is a unique game, nothing else has this level of detail, this time scale, and is this large.

I hear you loud and clear, I have been playing since Pac War and as soon as a new game comes out I get it. What really pisses me off is now that everytime I put the game down for a week or so, my aging mind has to restart the learning curve. You know all that beer I drank when I was younger was sure good, but it left me a couple of gallon short of a full tank in the brain cells department.
RE: A step to Far?
The biggest difficulty is relearning all of the hex ranges - especially if you are still play WitP games. Then again, I'm easily confused at the best of times!

This is not a putdown to any AI player, I still play the AI myself, but when I play PBEM I do tend to concentrate alot more on getting things right because I know there is a sneaky, underhanded, trickster on the other end of the game who will make me feel really stupid if I dont take my time[:-]. Usually it doesnt help, because most PBEM players are better players than I am I do learn alot and thats worth it[:D]

I know me better than anyone when it comes to games. I have never been one to catch on to a game like WitP, not because it is not a good game but because I am not a logical pay attention to detail person and the interface for this game is very large and it tends to overwhelm me. The interface will get better with AE I am sure.ORIGINAL: miller41

Don't let me give you the impression that I am not wanting to PBEM because I would love to but I have to walk before I can run. Part of my problem is that the game does things I do not understand or does not do what ZI want it to do. Most of the time it is my fault for not using the interface correctly
To Wit: I was under the impression that the computer would add ships to a TF when loading in port if the player did not have enough of the right ships, but this does not seem to be true. I finally do each part ,one for troop ,one for suplies one one for fuel, etc. I only changed when I read on the forum that this was a better way.
I will beat the AI and perhaps I can play another person in a real PBEM game. Right now I would not even be as good as the AI but I am learning. With what I have read and has been said I am learning a lot from the great players here.

Learning the game was not as difficult as it first appeared to me on opening it up the first time.  Learning how to play, what to do, how peopel can react and such takes a life time.

Yes, it is a difficult game to learn, and I have followed this forum ever since UV was introduced.

However, I don't think any experiece UV or WiTP players will have trouble adjusting.

New players are a different story, but then again you are either into this stuff or not.
