Why are the ships so slow?

Post by miral »

This is a minor quibble. I love the game and play it often. But why do the naval units move so slowly? In WWII a ship or group of ships could almost always move farther in a given period of time than a unit moving by land. But in AT the naval crawl, only 50 6 hexes a turn. If playing on even a medium sized map with a reasonable amount of ocean it takes forever to get your naval units anywhere. I wonder what the rationale for making naval movement so slow was?

I kind of agree that ships are too slow. However, because you can't set your warships to "intercept" enemy ships (a pity IMHO) there would be very hard to defend against enemy naval invasions if movement speeds are uped to much.

Anyway, you can edit the movement cost for ships. Look this up if you want to know how.

Your explanation makes good sense and thanks for the information. I believe strongly in having as many options as possible at the start of a game. There could be one for regular or speeded up ship movement. I will try and edit the function but you would be amazed at what a computer illiterate like me can do with a, no doubt, easy editing job (this is why I strongly favor having the options up front already in the game!)

Yoggi75 is absolutely right. You can´t intercept the ships.
You can´t do anything against naval landings with the setup tweber used for europe 1939 for example (4x ship speed).
So the enemy can move to your coast, unload his troops and move his ships away again.
The defending player can´t do anything and this is exactly why i like the slower ship speed and don´t like the 4x ship speed
used in 1939. A doubled speed would be ok (10 hexes), but this should be the maximum.

mabe a intercept ship feature should be added? something like the case with air interseption but the ships will intercept as soon they are in range and the enemies are visible.
