Does TCP/IP work?

Commander – Europe at War Gold is the first in a series of high level turn based strategy games. The first game spans WW2, allowing players to control the axis or allied forces through the entire war in the European Theatre.

Does TCP/IP work?

Post by DTomato »

I'm trying to get it to work. My opponent and I have both tried to host. The game just stays in the TCP/IP window. I believe I have a floating IP address (not sure about him).

We also tried to do this using Hamachi (creates a virtual private network between two computers). Didn't work either.

Yes I have played many games.  The host cannot be behind a router - though the person joining can be.  The reason is the system reads the actual IP address as host, which if you are behind a router is not the same as the address to the internet (it is an internal IP address) - so test if whomever is hosting has an IP address as host that begins with a non-internal IP number.

If you don't know if your behind a router this is how you find out.

Try going to dos prompt enter "cmd" and enter "ipconfig" this should show you some info ip address if it list 192.168.1.2-250 or up and default gate way is 192.168.1.1 you are behind a router.  If not it should list another ip address which is your ip address from your internet provider, and this can change if your not connected for a few days it will change!  Hope this help you.[:'(]

Wouldn't NAT (Network Address Translation) eliminate that issue if correctly configured on the router? It would simply be a matter of knowing what ports the game uses to connect to the server and then configure you Router's NAT to map those ports from the external IP to your internal IP.

It's quite easy to do with just about any game if the ports are known.

Right so then you can in fact host the game if your behind a router/firewall. As long as you know what your doing and your equipment supports the necessary configuration requirements.

Step 1: Go to a DOS prompt and type "ipconfig". Look at the IP Address under Default Gateway, this should be your router/firewall. Its probably something like 192.168.1.1
Step 2: In your browser type "192.168.1.1" it should bring up a logon box for your router. You may need to consult a manual or website for your model number to figure out the default password if you do not know it or haven't changed it.
Step 3: Varies per device but for Linksys which is common youd click on "Applications & Gaming" Type a description, for start port enter 6770 for end port enter 6771, for protocol choose both (since they didnt specify if those are TCP or UDP ports and for IP Address type in the address of your gaming machine (also can be found on that ipconfig line). Then Check the Enable box and click Save Settings.
Step 4: If you want to make sure these settings STAY working you will need to make sure your PC gets the same IP Address each time. Its probably setup for DHCP so you can either reserve it the same DHCP address (if this is an option in your router) or set it static and disable DHCP on your router/firewall. Another option is to leave DHCP enable for other devices and set your gaming machine static with an IP just outside the DHCP range.

Hope this helps. If I'm not making any sense you might want to grab your router/firewall manual. It should explain it all in much more detail specific to your device.
