PBEM Startup Help

Post by HansBolter »

I could use a little assistance with my first struggling PBEM steps.

A buddy in my F2F boardgame group is a UV player and offered to show me the ropes by giving me a sound thrashing in my first PBEM game.

He started the game as the Japanese and emailed me a .dat file.

I copied the .dat file into my Saved Game folder.

I started the Game and chose PBEM for the game type. (when I do so it automatically sets both player choices to "computer").

I looked for the "saved game" to load and there was no sign of the .dat file he had sent me in the "saved game listing".

What are the corect procedures for the Allied player to start a PBEM game from a file sent to him by the Japanese player?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Hans

Hi Hans - first, you do not have to choose any game type, it sees that in the game file. Second, the file extension for UV is UVS so a game file for me looks like this: uv015_RK_T155__10_04_42.uvs

Good luck.

I was wondering if the file type he sent me was correct and just chalked it up to an apparent difference between solitaire and H2H game types. All of my solitaire saved games have the same format as you listed, but the file he sent me is labeled "save003.dat"

I guess I'll have to contact him and ask him what's up.

Thanks for the help.

It sounds like your friend had V2.0 and patched to V2.5 and got a bad install.  I had this happen to me with a PBEM opponent so if you're installed to V2.5 this could be the problem at his end.

Thanks Tocaff. I'm pasting your reply into an email to him to give him a heads up.

Never seen that before.

What scenario did your opponent talk you into?

Frankly, we were busy in the middle of our 5 player F2F board game when we discussed it and I don't even recall. Nor did we discuss specifics of variable reinforcements or committment percentages. Since I had been telling him about my initial experiences with #17, I assumed that was the one he started. I'll get everything clarified tomorrow when we meet up for boardgame night.

Another guy in the group has the game, but has never played it. He called me last night to ask if I would show him the ropes. Kind of ironic since I am a beginner too, but I agreed to give it a go and show him what I have learned so far.

We got the file rpoblem sorted out and I sent off my first turn today so I am waiting expectantly for the return email so I can see the first resolution phase.

I did confirm we are playing #17 with fixed reinforcements, 100% committment, Historical Japanese Sub Doctrine is Off and American Damage Control Advantage is On.

I have no clue what to expect as opening moves from a human player. Even the AI has surprised me once by going all out for Lunga & Tulagi as it's opening move rather than Gili Gili and Buna.

Scenario #17 looks like a milder version of #19, which not only gives the IJ player back his lost CVs, but also better pilots and more troops, etc. Many UV players think #19 is the only (long) scenario the IJ player can win.

Currently I'm playing a historical scenario, #16, Yamamoto's Prophecy, as the IJ.

Correction-not the only scenario that the Japanese can win, but rather the scenario that gives the Japanese player the best chance to win.
