That sneaky little AI

Post by Rob Roberson »

Wow. Despite the loss of three carriers, IM chugging along feeling pretty good about the way the campaign is going. Just launched a major land offensive in an attempt to retake Gili Gili. It's going well. Loading up reinforcements at PM for that operation. PM is well supplied. Calm before the storm. I read while the AI processes its turn. I look up and what do I see? A Japanese BB task force beating on my fully laden troop transports IN PM! Needless to say a congressional investigation is in order. What a disaster. To top it off it pounded my airfield all but assuring that land based air would not exact a toll for such audacity. I still can't figure out how my patrol missed it..but ****...what a nice move.

Rob : If I might ask what day is in in your campaign.

The japanese get huge surface, land and air reinforcements so that in Late July/Early August you will have to deal with superior enemy surface forces, not to mention large numbers of LBA from Rabaul, and possibly Shortland.

Also, did you play scenario 17 (the one where Midway is not assumed to happen) or the one where Midway is assumed to happen?

Finally I suggest you keep all updates on the one you are playing within one thread, rather than multiple threads.
Last time I checked, the forums were messed up. ;)

"Rob : If I might ask what day is in in your campaign. "

I am now in mid July

Also, did you play scenario 17 (the one where Midway is not assumed to happen) or the one where Midway is assumed to happen?

I'm playing the historical version of 17.

Sorry about bouncing around I wasnt actually doing an AAR with this...just reporting cool things I had found along the way. I am actually trying things out the first time through to see how things work (or how well they work). I will probably restart the whole thing this weekend and do a single thread AAR.

I have already learned quite a bit about how to do things (and how the AI does things).

All I played until now was the Coral Sea scenario - from both sides. After I had won decisively with the Allies, I had a real desaster with the Japanese. I lost Shokaku, Zuikaku and Shoho (all in the same TF), while all of my own squads failed to locate the target!!!! Needless to say that my Buna invasion fleet was toast, too after that.
I replayed the scenario, and scored a decisive victory the second time with Buna fallen, and the Yorktown sunk. When the carriers are gone, everything is easy going. :)
I have to say, though, that Rob has still a good chance to win his game with the Allies (the goodies will arrive later :)). If he would have had these horrible losses with the Japanese right in the beginning, he would already be doomed, though ...
