Unit Sizes

Post by lion_of_judah »

are the Rifle, Tank, Paratroopers and others battalion level or squad? I'm thinking battalion level.

you can have 100 rifles in a hex whithout penalty, so it depends of the scale of the scenario. I think the largescale scenarios is at about 15-25 km per hex(diplomacy) and the smallscale ones (Ardennes) 2-5km.

A long debated question. The size depends on scale and is defined by scenario designers. See for example tm.asp?m=1627523&mpage=1&key=&#1627765.

If a rifle is a rifle, then a unit with around 200 of them would be a rifle company. If you take each rifle as an infantry squad, for example, you can get larger units (rifle x 250 would be a battalion) much more easily.

it makes sense in my opinion that each rifle = a battalion level unit.

Depends on the size of the scenario and what it represents. In WAW one TANK may be a regiment, but one Infantry is no regiment. Nor a battalion. A Division would have 9 rifle Battalions. 3 per Regiment.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

That seems a bit excessive, from my point of view. Units with around 100 rifles (and other sub-formation types) are common, and with that scale, such unit would be an entire army (as in a collection of corps, which are made of divisions)!

Anyway, as Twotribes said, it depends on the size of the scenario and the intention of the author.

so as in TOAW they should be based on squad level units? That is how I'm using them in a scenario I'm working on, but for the tanks and artillery they should be at least Battalion level.

Question/test for everybody:

Supposition: I create a german infantry division with 100 rifles. Period: 1939-1940.

How many MG, Mortar... should I put inside ?

Second supposition: after this infantry division, I want to create a PanzerDivision:
How many tanks (light and medium)... ??
