Number of turns

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

Number of turns

Post by wildcowboy »

With three months passing with each turn is this game actually worth it? The war could be over in just a dozen turns or so.

Comments?

I guess you'll have a hard time finding anyone here in the lion's den who'll say that the game is bad. [:D]

To answer your question: Yes, it is definitely worth it if you like grand strategy.

A game can take up to 30 turns (from Summer 1939 to Fall 1946) and it is almost impossible to win before 1943. A thought-out turn can take more than an hour for each side (Axis, Allies). Now if we assume an average time of 45 minutes for both sides and an average game length of 20 turns, the result is 15 hours of gaming time, it could well be more. Sounds enough to me. [:)]

If you're still undecided, you could try the demo of its first incarnation to get a general idea. Note that its successor AWD is much refined and better though. The other hint is: Did you play and like the old Axis & Allies? If so, you have a good chance of loving AWD because it is much deeper while conserving the "easy to play, hard to master" characteristic.

I may try the demo. As for A & A, It was one of my favorites of grand strategy as Ive gotten a little board with the operational level stuff such as SP: WAW. A & A has just gotten way too easy for me and I'm debating on getting War in the Pacific but think I'll wait for the new addition/expansion due out this year.

As for anybody on here to say something bad, I must agree, I doubt those who would loathe the game would still be hanging around.[8D]

If A&A is too easy for you than AWD might be exactly the right thing. [:)]

War in the Pacific is a unique game, but be aware that it has a serious level of complexity and options. There's an AAR that began almost four years ago...
