The meeting between MGEN Hasegawa 25th Army HQ and LGEN Mutaguchi was short sharp, and almost as hot as the outside air temperature
" Your forces will advance immediately! -there will will be no 'waiting for complete supply unloading' -what rubbish!"
"Sir"
"Advance -advance now!"
"Hie"

captain Umeya paced the little flight deck of his carrier
Hosho was a little ship - and the ocean was a very big place
he stared at the horizon - somewhere ahead of him , also steaming eastward were 2 large merchant raiders, and a CS ship.
And further east again, somewhere in the wastes, he had to trust that KB lurked, awaiting for his group of ships to sweep past, and then follow them deep into the ocean between Pearl hbr and the American coast.
it was a beautiful day -a good day for fishing.
he smiled wanely - fishing, and the word bait just could not be put out of his mind.........
The ocean surely was a big place.

As the end of the first week of the war approached, it was slowly dawning upon the japanese high command that the allies were going to adopt a "sir robin defence"
Japanese offensive plans would have to be modified.
First example of this was the first major raid on singapore, some 56 oscars, and 69 zeros escorting 120 sallies
20 Buffaloes intercepted, 8 being shot down with out loss to the japanese
The raid heavily hit the singapore fields, destroying more aircraft on the ground
Elswhere the allies recieved a very rude shock, as 96 nells struck Kuchang, flying from at that time the un heard of range of the siagon airfields.
It appeared that some one some where had badly under estimated the ability of the japanese bombers
The end of the day saw the following bases captured,
manado, lae and Kuching -the later spelt great danger to the allied defence
Emboldened by the lack of resistance, and terified that the allies would gather defences at palembang quickly, new orders went out......

LT Yamato had been physically sick just prior to the mission - terrified of letting his crew down in the forth coming mission
But once in the air, all became well
he tucked his beloved Sally bomber neatly into the formation, and marvelled at the empires might as they flew south
So many bombers -so many fighters!
"Fighters!"
little dots straining to climb up to them -buffalo's?
And then the fighter escort diving down on them
Too easy.
target appraoches -and yamato watches his leader like a hawk - and his bombs go away exactly as his does.
This is good
The bombers turn for home -a mountain of black smoke rising from the city below.
yamato no longer felt sick, if this was war, then this was ok by him.

A small bridge in northern malaya
a small detachment of men considered it from some one hundred yards down the road.
The jungle was deathly quiet, and as always, hot, the men sweating.
" After you young friend"
Private Ado grimaced, yes it was his turn.
Grimly he mounted his bicycle, and detirmedly cycled straight down the road to the bridge.
it would have been cowardly to have accelerated at the bridge -but it took all his nerve not to.
The jungle remained quiet.
Ado dismounted, and carefully surveyed the bridge, and the surounding jungle as best he could.
Nothing
Grinning, he waved to his companions down the road, and soon they joined him
5th division had entered the province of Alor star............

The hunt- this is how the japanese pilots and saiors would describe the coming days
Spread over 500 square miles ships from the phillipines sped south est and east in the phillipine sea
This day would see the CVE taiho and 2 CS ships, the chitose and chiyode reach the area, these ships and the naval bombers, and float planes based at Palua and in the marianas spent the day busily putting as many of these to the bottom as they could
AV langely quickly went, as did several other AKs.
The hunt was on.
The day was again marked with sparodic air engagements, mainly against the fleet of ships near kuching - all with out much effect
Swordfish operating from vic point did place a well aimed torpedoe into the Cl sendai at singkhora - however its damage was light.
The evenings brief to herbiesan was quite pleasing -"the war continues as planned"

Again when the look outs shouted the expected contact-"bombers -bearing 165! degrees - height 15000 feet" Radm Takagi could feel the tensness invade his body
"I should be getting used to this " he thought, as again he raised his glasses towards the enemy formation coming towards his fleet.
"not so many this time" -and this was good - the claudes are in better position this time as well.
The attack was totally ineffectual - a few bombs falling far astern of the Ise.
still -they keep getting through...............
nevertheless -he has his orders
' Flags -signal to Capt takeda -BB Ise -clear the road for me -conduct naval bombardment palembang as planned. good hunting"

Capta takeda felt far more confident today
All day the british had attacked them, and not once had any of his ships been even shaken by them
The question was decided, battleships had little, if anything to fear from allied planes - they still remained queen of the seas.
Carefully he viewed the chart ahead of him.
the approach to palembang would be tricky -it may even have been mined since the wars beginning -yet he could see a possible route.
So far denied an engagement with the Prince of wales (so sure he had been that the british must contest the landings at kuching), he would at least be able tomorrow to exercise his guns against the enemy.
35th brigade had been promised support
he would give it.

The rate of japanese attacks began to accelerate as the war approached the end of its first week
Four heavy battleships bombarded palembang, and the 35th brigade came ashore against sparodic fire.
tavoy fell in the phillipines, Alor star was fully occupied, and japanese destroyers and cruisers bombarded singkawang. In the far south east pacific tarwana was taken.
Resistance through out the day again was in effectual, although many bombers attacked resolutely this day -few, if any hits were gained on the invading ships.
This was in stark contrast to the bombers operating from Palua, and off the decks of Chitose, Chiyoda, and the little Taiyo -which continued to reap a bitter harvest of fleeing ships in the phillipine sea.
The japanese Army air force was now firmly established in malaya, and at laoag in the phillipines..
The war continued to the plan.

Capt Takeda was now having as good a time as a battleship commander could reasonably ever expect to have
Yamishiro, Fuso, Ise and Hyuga steamed slowly line ahead - the great barrels all pointing to the port of palembang
The shooting was good -slow, deliberate -and from the reports ashore -very, very effective
35th brigade would go in tonight -great things were expected
But the highlight of the day had been the air attacks.
Now he KNEW -that the battleships would prevail over air - over 30 bombers had attacked him today - and all had missed.
Ammunition levels remained good - enough for tomorrow if needed.

On advice from several high ranking members of the air corp, and on careful examination of the inspector generals report on the performance of the LIZ bomber - i am cancelling the production of the aircraft forthwith.
You are instructed to convert the factory producing said aircraft to zero production at the earliest opportunity.

herbiesans private thoughts............
OK, the allies are running away full speed
Sufficient strength in malaya committed.
Enough for the southern phillipines coming
Must conquer DEI quick! -then india
new tactic in the south? -do not take solomons? -save the forces? -or occupy -big decision to make here.
USA CVs? -gawd knows where -can KB get em?
OK -go for wake -seems like he will pull out here too.......
Whatever happens - try to stick to the plan !
Final thoughts - be ruthless -sack any general who fails me!

The first week of the war finished with the japanese troops well ashore at palembang -and the towns defences rapidly collapsing - the hammering being delivered by the 4 battleships off shore paving the way for the first solid attacks that night.
35th Brigade would capture the town the next day, all could see that.
Fighting continued at Hong Kong, where the japanese seemed to be in no hurry , the chinese were advancing on canton, in an effort to disrupt this attack
The Allies did this day get in the first serious blow of the war -a dutch ss torpedoing the CA haguro off palembang -she however remained with the carrier task force.
Japan today landed troops at Singkawang, and miri.

Saluations Comrade leader!
With pleasure i bring a brief summary of the war situation re all commands under me
At this time Burma Command -Gen Kawabe -is advancing slowly into Burma - as you rightly predicted he is none too pleased about losing 15th Army to Gen Hasegawa -but he will get over it!
his 2 small brigades are advancing fairly well -tavoy has fallen, and i am throwing him a few bones in the shape of a few construction units.
I do not expect the Allies to severly test us here for another couple of months at least
I do require instruction on your Strategic desires for 33rd division -do you still wish it to go to Burma -we may need it to secure rangoon quickly -but sending it to Malaya won't hurt the Grand plan iether.
I await your advice
In malaya 25th Army (with 15th soon to join) is advancing well
MGEN Hasegawa has Mutaguchi and Oda positivley hating each other -and both extra keen to out do and out drive the other.
Not a bad thing at all in my opinion!
18th div and 16th div are at the intersection to Kaulan -i have orderd the driving charge south to continue
Air support is very, very good -thankyou
The allies are pulling into singapore it seems -a nice trap.
Our plans to secure Kuching, palembang quickly is going well -palembang by tomorrow i feel - you again were correct -allied "air power' is currently toothless.
Landings in the phillipines continue as planned, i expect to order.............
