So now I have a few months window of opportunity. What to do.....

Feel free to share Bilbow. Sigint has pretty much sucked lately. Just some traitor in Canada...

Yeah. That was useful.

Now this is a fun AAR! Makes up a bit for my lack of PBEM of late.

It's good to see that even some of the veterans and elder statesmen of the forum get their behind spanked once in a while. [8D]

And I guess this makes this game even more interesting for both of you and also for us readers, so this is a Win-"kinda Win"-Win situation here. [;)]

Please keep us updated, this is really a very interesting and enjoyable read. [&o]

I'd say my primary mistake was "predictability".  Ironicly, just as I whad been waiting for him to go for PM back in April, he was waiting for me to swing by Wake.  I looked at some of the old combat reports, and you could almost set your calendar by my bombings of Wake.  Just about every 2 weeks, give or take.  For Bilbow, it was a matter of waiting for me to make the run and then pounce (I don't mean to dimish anything on Bilbow's part, I think you know what I mean).

But predictability is bad...

Nice to see that bilbow went on at a situation when others might have quited - and that he was able to show that even after recieving some bad setbacks nothing is lost, yet! :)

Wow... that was an engament indeed! [:D]

Well.. you get your revenge soon enough though. Btw, how is your game going on vs Erstad? That was an uphill battle last time heard about.

We did not start the rematch. I think it would have been waste now that AE is coming out.

As ever good luck!

Get's me everytime! Usually the ramifications are on a small scale, like bombing an airfield once too often in succession and losing a dozen bombers. Losing as many fleet CVs in one battle as was lost in all of 1942 historically must hurt[X(], especially without causing reciprical damage in return. Well, your CV battles will be much smaller from now until late 43 so the game engine might actually handle them better.

Btw, how is your game going on vs Erstad? That was an uphill battle last time heard about.

Not to hijack my own thread but -

I've recaptured Midway and all of SoPac. It wasn't heavily defended, just enough to make it a challenge. I wouldn't call it costly in materiale' so much as time. While I did recapture Miday, he's fortified the heck out Wake and the CentPac bases. There was also a cameo appearance by mini-KB against my Nanomea invasion, but the CVs were out of range (I'm sure he planned it that way), so he only pummeled the remaining transprots, and bugged out. Luganville is now back in Allied hands as well (you can tell how bad things had gotten by my list of what I "liberated").

But again, it's all been "the easy stuff" - it's just been his static defenders and I haven't had to tackle an atoll defended by 3 divisions combined with a incursion by his flat-tops (which he still has all of them sans a single CVE btw). I actually think he gave me freebie by shutting down his training base at San Jose - of course, that probably also means he's already got scads of good pilots anyway.

The game has actually slowed down a bit, frankly my head is exploding from all managing all the crap the Allies have (I'm actually at a shortage of transports for what I want to accomplish), and Dave has to take a couple days between turns occasionally because his real life has been busy enough (actually same excuse for me). It makes me think -this- game (vs. Bilbow) in CHS is going to turn into a real hair-puller as there are no "groups" for Allies, all squadron-level units, and with more ships on the OB, it's gonna get huge.

So, the game vs. Erstad is progressing (albeit slowly). To be perfectly honest, it's been a useful training tool these past 2 years, from learning mechanics to tactics to even magnitude of just how huge WitP becomes.

When I say the game vs. Bilbow "is just now getting to the interesting part", I truely mean that. Many PBEM games that never make it into 1943, the players really don't know what they're missing. There's a part of me that truely dispises 12-41 thru 05-42, during the usual expansion period. It's generally the same game for both sides. The Japanese player is running a script of what he's foudnt that works, and the Allied player is running a script of damage control. To me, I rather enjoy the part when the script is complete (expansion over), and both players have to sit back and say "now what?"; or when something dramatic happens to toss out the script, such as me stopping Bilbow off New Guinea, or him again clobbering me at Wake - the "script" goes out the door and both players have sit down and "ok, now what...?"

THAT is the fun part.

So in my own words for this AAR,

"Ok, now what...?"

I can't wait to see the new CAP/Strike routines...this ability of CAP to slap each wave with every fighter is not only physically impossible but just downright game breaking.

More turns please!!![:)]

Well - if they plan to reduce the ability of CAP to deefend bases, I hope they reduce the4 amount of damage the bombers do to airfild/port/planes on ground. At the moment, defending a base against massed bombers is a thankless task, whichever sid eyou are. Airstrips are too easily closed and planes on the ground, destroyed en masse.

Ever see what a squadron of 4E heavies do to an airbase from actuall WW2 photos? Ugly! But yes, the larger the airfield, the harder it should be to render unservicable.

Good grief man.

I'm trying to do monthly recaps, and we just now rolled into October *last night* (ergo time for an update).  This is an open AAR, so you're more than welcome to post (including your own updates), but at least give me chance to put some notes together.

Besides, if you want talk body count, "Operation Dieppe" is small potatoes compared to that huge wall your army just slammed itself against in SW China.  How long do you plan on banging your head against it?

01 Oct 42:

China -

Japanese assault from the SW centers around Nanning. The Chinese withdraw from the coastal city of Pakhoi to strengthen the garrison at Nanning and the city quickly falls to the IJA. THe defenders of Nanning continue to hold while buying time for local reserves to move up to Liuchow (what we believe the main thrust of the attack).

Reinforcments arrive at Liuchow, and counter-attack the IJA formations at they move toward the city. It is also coordinated with a drive by the 14th War Army along the enemy's SE flank. The counter-attack at Liuchow (and flank) have not yet been able to break the IJA assault, but shows promise (IJA "assault" is on the defensive).

A less coordinated attack by the Northern Chinese Army out of Homan against Sinyang is repulsed.

With lend-lease in full force and CAF squadrons finally recieving numbers for the (almost) modern Lancer and Vanguard fighters, plus RDAF and RAF squadron, has stabilized the air-war in China (somewhat). The Chinese lack sufficient forward bases to provide sufficient cover over Nanning, but have been able to gain local superiourity over Liuchow. Air losses are China losses are estimated at about 3:2 (Japan favor). Not optimal, but "acceptable" given the goal to attrit Japanese pilots (and that China is basically our 3rd string).

01 Oct 42:

Burma -

Following shortly on the debacle off Wake, the British decide to go ahead with a long planned invasion of the Andaman Islands (Port Blair) and the occupation of Car Nicobar Atoll.

Port Blair will be assaulted by elements of the 2nd UK Div, the 14/16/77 Chindit Bdes, and the Queen's Own Gurka Engineers. Forces to occupy Car Nicar remain undisclosed for security reasons. [;)]

Port Blair is pounded by Liberator III bombers for 3 weeks. Initially, the invasions proceed very well, the invasion forces follow behind a heavy storm-front, the Japanese LBA is grounded and UK invasion forces are able to approach the islands unmolested by by Japanese bombers. However, upon approaching the landing beaches, the British discover just how busy they IJN mine-layers have been. While the invasion forces are accompanied by several squadrons of mine-sweepers, these are taken out by whithering fire from heavily entrenched coastal batters that were not taken out by the arial bombardment. The transports suffer heavily on the extensive mine-fields surrounding Port Blair (and to a lesser degree, Car Nicobar). Even the covering surface forces meant to suprress then enemy shore batties, are heavily damaged by mines, the light cruisers Caledon and Capetown strike mines on their initial run into the firing area, and must withdraw before firing a single shot. While the invasion forces disgorge the assault troops, they have suffered considerable casualties before even making it the beach. As an emergency measure, the might of the RAF in Burma is sent to attack the Japanese positions to support the British drive to get off the beach. The attack fails however, and the bulk of the landing forces remain stranded on the beach. Fortunately the landing forces have landed with ample supplies, and will either hold until either relief or evacuation can be arranged (frankly, there are no other options).

The landing at Car Nicobar is attacked by by enemy dive-bombers and surface groups on the 3rd day, but most of it's troops are already ashore.

The operation to capture Andaman is quickly taken up by Tokyo Rose and nick-named "Operation Dieppe". The toll of on transports is approximately 50 transports and 20 escorts lost due mostly to mines. While certainly a failure, the only redeeming element is that at least this wasn't a "critical" operation such an invasion of Port Moresby, Lunga, Tarawa or another (obvious) Allied intial targets.

Meanwhile, the RAF has managed to achieve pairity with the Tonys in Burma, and in-fact, appear to be gaining the upper hand. Most of the strategic targets in Burma (Rangoon, Moulmein, Tavoy) have been obliterated, and soon the IJA forces in Burma will be forced to import supplies by sea in order to sustain itself (at least hopefully).

Editorial - I have never seen so many mines. I have no idea how many there were, but gosh there must have been many thousands. I did have MSWs and "well balanced" invasion (in my opinion). But holy crap, there were a lot of mines. I'm not going to whine about CDs and Mines, he blasted the sh_t out of my invasion, and given how much crap he's got there (including a full Bde(+) which surprised me), I think it's "reasonable" (altho I don't have to enjoy it). Again, it's a "costly" learning experience, b ut at least Andy is a failure instead of being surprised on a larger invasion (and even more costly). Betwen the debacle off Wake and the Andy invasion getting blown to pieces, I'm glad to close the books on September.

A Lib III takes a picture of chain mine explosions at Port Blair...
