How Cool Is This Game?

Post by emcgman »

Not so concerned with graphics.

Also own War In The Pacific.

Is this a really worthy Naval Game?

What exactly do you control?

Indiviudual ships? Do you decide when to actually fire a gun?

Thanks

Get the DEMO of H3ANW and you will see just what you can control, HCE allows similar control of the battlegroup also.

emcgman, Harpoon is the coolest naval game ever. You will be doing yourself a disservice if you don't add it to your collection pronto. (Yes, I'm biased, but that's my honest opinion).

Individual ships, submarines, aircraft or whole fleets or formations.

Yes.

You guys are sounding kind of persuasive.

Where exactly can I grab a demo, if one is available.

Thanks

If you like WITP, you should really like this. You have a lot more control over your units. Where WITP is a strategic simulation, HCE is more of a tactical simulation...you decide where to engage, when to engage and how to engage, down to the point of deciding if a target is worth firing missiles at or just engaging with guns.

Where WITP runs cap and intercepts automatically, with HCE, you decide what to intercept with, if you intercept at all.

With HCE, each scenario presents you with an objective and an OOB with which to accomplish that objective. How you go about doing that is completely up to you...down to the loadouts on your aircraft. Don't like the idea of going in close with Mk 83s? Then change the loadout.

Basically, where with WITP you issue top level orders and have to depend on the computer to carry them out. In HCE you can take direct control, to the point of micro-managing if you like, and see to it the orders get carried out in the way you intend.

That's about the I can describe it using a game you already know.

Thanks guys.

I really appreciate your information.

I've got the demo, now.

I'm kind of a broke guy, so I have to wait until next payday or so, but the Harpoon combo pak is going to be downloaded soon!

I can see from the screen shots, that I've got individual ships, vector positioning, etc.

Just needed to here some cool feedback.

Thanks again!

HC97 demo (ignore that Mod sticker next to my name <g>)
 http://www.download.com/Harpoon-Classic-97-demo/3000-7562_4-10001169.html
it looks quite similar to HCE but HCE has come a long ways internally even if the interface is nearly unchanged.

Demos of an even older branch of the Harpoon Classic line

What usually kills the interest in a game for me is when I have no clue of what I'm doing or why I'm doing it.

I know quit a bit on land warfare so that when trying to learn a new game I firstly try to mimic the strategy/tactics of the time within the constraints of the engine.

But ... I know absolutly nothing about modern naval warfare. Before buying the game, is there some ressources on the web I could read to gather a little knowledge on the subject ?

Well, it comes *after* buying the game, but the manual has a detailed guide to modern naval warfare - from superpower's maritime strategies, to tactics, to a description of the technologies involved in modern naval warfare (and how they are used). It is a 148 pages book. [:)]
