Bombard question?

Post by HansBolter »

Can I bombard my own base hex if enemy units are sharing the hex but have not yet taken the base from me?

I tried this in a solitaire game at GG and the combat report came back blank. I wasn't sure if I got a blank report because I tried to do something the game wouldn't facilitate or if I simply had too weak a bombardment to be able to kill any troops.

Luckily, I didn't get a report of any port ot port supply hits, which is what I was hoping for. I don't want to bombard my own port, I want to bombard the enemy force several miles down the coast from my port.

I tested this about 5 months ago Hans and honestly can´t remember the answer! [:D]

But, in my hazy memory something is telling me you can´t or it isn´t worth it. For example when doing an invasion and your troops land your air bombing attack effectiveness against the defending troops is drasticaly reduced from fear of hitting your own troops.

You can easily test this yourself but as I´m trying to remember it seemed the bombardment of invading troops did not work at all or the effectiveness was so low it wasn´t even worth the system damage.

Ike may be correct re fratricide fears in UV, but if you're going to send a surface TF to relieve a base under seige, why not send it as a fast transport and reinforce your base w/troops instead of trying to bombard your own territory?

I tried this several times and had no luck getting the Bombardment Group to fire on enemy forces co-habitating with my forces in a hex.

AFAIR it's only possible to bombard enemy units at your base hex by air strikes. Bombardment TF will not fire.

That would explain Bolter's blank bombardment report.

Unique situation. I used the airlift tatic to get a small force into GG early. I then considered the move as ill considered. It's better to let the Japs have GG and and give me the oppurtunity to attrite his resupply/reinforcement efforts than vice versa. So I had already wrote off the garrison and figured I would drag out his taking of the base as long as possible sine I already had the small force there. It seems one good way to do that would be to attrite his force before it attacked me. I know, a real commander would probably send in a fast transport force to remove the small garriosn, but I saw a value in using them to delay his capture of teh base and attrite his forces.

To evac the force is a viable solution before they are eliminated as the run from Cairns or Townsville is not so far and LBA shouldn't be a problem.  Know where the KB is before doing dangerous naval activities though.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

Somehow I knew you would sniff this one out and realize it applied to my email game against you. [;)]
