The team's pitching woes continued today in a 7-3 loss to the Orioles. Oakland led 3-1 going into the 8th inning. Mike Norris was crusing, but was pulled in the 8th after loading the bases with 2 singles and a walk. Enter John Henry Johnson, who promptly allowed a double and two singles without retiring a batter. He was replaced by Jim Todd. Todd allowed one inherited runner to score and the Orioles led 6-3. Baltimore added an insurance run in the 9th, as Todd walked the leadoff batter and was replaced by Dave Heaverlo, who gave up another walk and an RBI double. Tum....T-Tum Tum.....Tummmmms.

Johnson was credited with the loss, although Norris allowed 4 runs. That's fine with me. Although he shouldn't have officially received the loss, he earned it!

On a bright note, Mitchell Page was 3-3 with an walk. On, alas, another bad note, 3B Wayne Gross injured his wrist and will go on the 15-day DL. He was replaced in the lineup by Mickey Klutts (that's a scary thought, isn't it). The A's recalled IF Milt Ramirez from AAA Tacoma. Ramirez' "Hands" are rated at 100. Too bad one of those "hands" isn't a pitching hand.

Al Bumbry singled in Mark Belanger with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning fof the game's only run in a 1-0 Baltimore victory over the A's. Tippy Martinez was the winning pitcher in relief. Craig Minetto took the loss. Don Stanhouse pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the 1oth for the save. Surprise starter Dave Hamilton was excellent for the A's, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 5. He did not walk a batter.

The Baltimore Orioles held on to edge the A's 8-7, sweeping the 3-game series. Baltimore jumped out to a 5-0 lead, helped by a Lee May 2-run homer in the 3rd. The A's tied the score with 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Tony Armas swatted his 9th home run in the inning, a two-run shot.

Matt Keough allowed a leadoff homer to Gary Roenicke in the top of the 8th, giving the Orioles a 6-5 lead. Keough was relieved by Bob Lacey. Later in the 8th, Doug Decinces hit a 2-run homer off Lacey to make the score 8-5. Oakland rallied in the 8th, scoring twice off Scott McGregor and Tippy Martinez. The A's left the bases loaded in the inning. Baltimore closer Don Stanhouse got the A's 1-2-3 in the 9th.

The month of April ended as it started, with an Oakland victory. The A's got good pitching from McCatty, Johnson, and Todd to beat the Red Sox 2-1. Tony Armas drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the 1st for Oakland's only scoring. Fred Lynn tied Tony Armas with his 9th home run in the 6th. Dennis Eckersley took the loss for Boston. McCatty got the win. Todd pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his first save.

The month of May, unfortunately, started the way most of April went. The Boston Red Sox hit five homers and routed the A's 11-2. Butch Hobson led the way, going 3-5, with 2 homers and 5 RBI. Gary Allenson and Dwight Evans added two-run homers, and Bob Watson chipped in with a solo shot. Dwayne Murphy's 2-run homer accounted for both of the Oakland runs.

Mike Torrez, 0-3 entering the game, went the distance for the win. Rick Langford lasted only 4 1/3 innings, allowing 7 earned runs and 4 homers. Brian Kingman finished up, allowing 4 runs in 4 2/3 innings.

The Boston Red Sox took the series with a 5-2 victory over the A's. Boston broke open a 2-2 game in the 3rd, as 3 straight Boston batters came through. Dwight Evans homered, Carlton Fisk tripled, then Stan Papi homered. Mickey Klutts drove in both Oakland runs with a two-run single. Mike Norris went 7 innings and took the loss. Bob Stanley went all the way for the Sox.

Following an off day on Thursday, the A's open a 10-game road trip with 3 games against the Yankees, followed by 4 against Baltimore and 3 against the Red Sox, before returning home on May 15th.

Dave Revering smacked a 3-run homer in the 1st and the A's got 3 scoreless innings of relief from Dave Hamilton, as the A's topped the Yankees 7-5. New York had 2-run homers from Chris Chambliss and Lou Piniella, but it wasn't enough. Steve McCatty (3-1) allowed 5 runs in 6 innings, but picked up the win. Dave Hamilton allowed only a single in his 3 innings and picked up his 2nd save. Ed Figueroa (2-2) took the loss.

The Oakland A's took two out of three from the Yankees with a 4-1 decision in the Bronx. Tony Armas (10) and Dwayne Murphy (4) homered for the A's. Rick Langford (2-4) struggled early, loading the bases in each of the first two innings, but settled down. He retired 16 Yankees in a row at one point. John Henry Johnson pitched the 8th and 9th, retiring all six men he faced to earn his first save. Tommy John (3-4) took the loss for the Yankees.

Derek Bryant's pinch-hit 2-run single in the top of the 9th gave the A's a rare comeback win, as they edged the Orioles 7-6.

Baltimore took a 4-3 lead in the 6th inning on Rick Dempsey's 2-run double. They would add 2 more runs in the inning, chasing Oakland starter John Henry Johnson. Down 6-3, the A's faced Baltimore closer Don Stanhouse in the 9th. The mustachioed big man, known to manager Earl Weaver as "Full Pack", lived up to the nickname, as Weaver puffed many cigarettes in the runway as Stanhouse allowed the A's to stage their rally.

After Rob Picciolo flew out to start the 9th, Dwayne Murphy drew a walk. Tony Armas then singled to center, moving Murphy to 3rd. Mitchell Page then singled up the middle, scoring Murphy and cutting the Baltimore lead to 6-4. Stanhouse then walked A's catcher Jeff Newman, loading the bases with one out. Oakland manager motnahp replaced Newman with pinch runner Milt Ramirez. Dave Revering chopped a grounder to second baseman Rich Dauer. Dauer's only play was at first, as Armas scored. Page advanced to 3rd and Ramirez stood on 2nd. Manager motnahp brought Bryant off the bench to hit for Mickey Klutts. Weaver visited the mound and called on lefty Tippy Martinez to face right-handed batter Bryant. The rookie outfielder grounded Tippy's first pitch up the middle, scoring the tying and go-ahead runs.

Jim Todd pitched a scoreless 9th, surviving a one-out walk to Pat Kelly, before retiring Lee May and Dauer to earn his 2nd save. Brian Kingman (2-0) pitched 3 scoreless innings and earned the victory. Kingman is making a strong case for getting a spot in the rotation. John Henry Johnson, who has been good out of the pen, had another poor start. The young lefty went only 5 + innings, allowing 10 hits and 6 runs. His ERA is now an even 10.00. Dave Hamilton was originally pencilled in to make this start, but his 3 innings of brilliant relief on Saturday made him unavailable. Mario Guerrero made the start at shortstop, with Picciolo moving to 2nd base. Guerrero entered the game 0-for-22 on the season. He was 3 for 5 today.

Scott McGregor twirled a 3-hitter and the Orioles shut out the A's, 4-0. McGregor walked no one and struck out three. The A's only had one runner reach second base, Dwayne Murphy's double in the first inning. For the A's, Matt Keough (1-6) continues to struggle. He looks great in the early innings, but cannot maintain his sharpness. Keough went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs, while walking 4. Dave Heaverlo (1 1/3) and Craig Minetto (1) pitched scoreless relief.

Steve Stone matched teammate Scotty McGregor by shutting out the A's on 3 hits. Stone (5-2), walked 3 and struck out 7. A's pitcher Steve McCatty also allowed only 3 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 5. The game's only run came with 2 outs in the last of the 6th. Al Bumbry lined a solo homer 312 feet, just over the wall in left field. It was Bumbry's first homer of the season, and was just out of the reach of leaping Oakland left fielder Rickey Henderson. Baltimore's Memorial Stadium has a very short left field fence (309 feet). Oakland manager motnahp could only shake his head the last two days, as the Oakland pitching has been superb and the bats have been silenced.

The A's opened up a 3-game series in Boston by pounding the Red Sox, 10-3. The bats woke up and collected 17 hits. Dwayne Murphy was 3-6, with a homer (5) and 3 RBI. Tony Armas hit his 11th homer. Jeff Newman went 4-5 with 2 RBI. Oakland starter Rick Langford (3-4) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs. Once again, the Oakland bullpen was superb, as Dave Hamilton (1 1/3 IP) and Bob Lacey (1 IP) held the Bosox off the board in the late innings. Boston starter Mike Torrez (2-4) was roughed up for 13 hits and 7 earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Mike Norris handcuffed the powerful Boston lineup today, shutting them out on 6 hits. Tony Armas hit a 3-run homer, his 12th of the season. Mickey Klutts hit his 1st homer. Rob Picciolo and Rickey Henderson added two hits apiece, but the star was Norris (3-4), who struck out 4 and also walked 4. He allowed a hit and a walk in the 9th, but was able to finish the game for his 4th career shutout and first since 1977. This was also the Oakland pitching staff's first shutout this season.

Gary Allenson hit a 3-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 9th to give the Red Sox a dramatic 4-1 win over the A's at Fenway. Steve Renko (4-1) went the distance for Boston, allowing only 6 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 2. Brian Kingman pitched brilliantly for the A's. The rookie righthander, making his first major league start, went 7 1/3 innings, allowing only 5 hits and 1 run. He struck out 6 and walked 3. A's reliever Dave Hamilton got out of a jam in the 8th, but was victimized by Allenson's blast over the Green Monster in the 9th. Hamilton falls to 0-2.

The A's completed their brutal 10-game road trip through the best of the AL East with a 5-5 record.

Oakland starter Mike Norris lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed 5 earned runs on 9 hits. Catcher Jeff Newman was 4-4 with a walk in a losing effort.
