RHS file posting thread: coutesy update for AI scenario air groups issued
This is for things changing in RHS.
I am doing a turn - and as I look at things - I am making minor changes - which will fold into this update.
If there are reported eratta, they too will fold in.
If a problem occurs of some proportions - we will address it - and issue the update.
So far I have incorporated an AE concept to help with non warship construction:
vessels will appear at start - but damaged - so it takes time for them to become functional.
For moderate delays this will be conventional damage. For longer delays this will be 90 regular
damage plus floatation damage. Units that should appear in places to be captured will appear
at Saigon, on Formosa, etc.

RE: RHS 7,7897 development thread
VFN naval vessels - not civil craft - no longer have 10 experience ratings.
On the other hand, newly organized formations of barges, junks, etc for Japanese logistic services now DO
have 10 experience ratings. Changing these formations alone is having a major impact on ship production and
I will have to reduce the number of merchant build points per day - for the first time.

RE: RHS 7,7897 development thread
Sid, in one of your prior recent discoveries, you stated MSW may be priced as merchant ships.
We changed the Aussie Bathurst class to DMS (for good reason.).
Should the production "point availibility" be reduced from the allies to compensate, (to be fair??)[&:]

RE: RHS 7,7897 development thread
The Allies seem not to have any "production points" at all - their ships just appear without cost. It is only Japanese ships that are "produced" in this sense.
Or I do not understand the suggestion.

RTN Chao Phya reclassified from MSW to PG. This vessel was a former RN MSW, but no longer operated or trained in that mode.
She was a training vessel available for emergency patrol duty (with light weapons) - and she had neither sweeps nor mine warfare
trained crewmembers. The latter are more important than the former for acutal MS operations. Badly as RTN needs MSW, it does not have any.

Philippine Air Force / USAAF 6th Fighter squadron experience and morale reduced to 35 / 50. This unit should
not be at US norms. It did, however, have a single talented pilot, who managed an unusual kill when the
Japanese attacked - in spite of mounting a P-25 Peashooter.

Si Senior. Dat's the guy. He shot down a Ki-21 if I remember right - not bad for a fighter with WWI scale weapons (meaning
two machine guns).

Test Analysis
Test Conditions:
KB had all four Kongos, both Nagatos and Yamato - so we have all three ultra heavy AA guns in the test bed
Halsey has all 5 USN CVs
IJN fighters ALL set to LR CAP over PH - NO fighters defend KB
Base test: Guns set to NAVAL GUNS
254 naval sortees (203 of which are bombers) take 27 kills and 33 damaged (all bombers)
32 land based aircraft take no casualties
UH AA test: Guns set to DP guns
279 naval aircraft (239 of which are bombers) take 44 kills and 62 damaged (all bombers)
26 land based aircraft take no casualties
Conclusion: Ultra heavy AAA is too effective - and the values we must use (for surface combat) do not work for AA combat.
Further - the rate of losses in the first raid indicates the heavy guns run out of ammunition - or are put out of action by enemy hits -
as later raids have minsicule losses. Running a battleship out of heavy shells in a raid or two is not reasonable.

P-38 testing
testing of P-38 configurations indicates the classfication change from fighter bomber to fighter has a measurable
but slight impact
so does testing with a modifier to maneuverability on the order of 10 per cent (2 in 20)
Neither impact is severe.
Research indicates that the flaps took effect in the field with the J modification (field modifications of it at first)
so the failure to give a boost to the G model is justified. However, the classification of the G as a fighter
is not a problem - and since with an unboosted maneuverability rating there is a significant difference between the
models - and since the aircraft was designed as a fighter (oddly a SHORT RANGE air superiority fighter - two engines
being adopted due to lack of power in any one) - we can reclassify G as a fighter as well.

RE: Ki-43
The Ki-43 was not popular with JAAF test pilots. Their experience with the Ki-10 - and the Ki-27 (and its Ki-33/Claude competator) - led them to demand more maneuverability. They "believed that future air combats would look like WWI dog fights." To answer this call, the Ki-43 - still in development - introduced butterfly flaps - which "could increase lift" and "greatly reduce the turning circle" - leading to extreme maneuverability. In response to a flap system adding maneuverability to P-38 - we need to consider it for this case - where it seems to have been effective. The Ki-43 lacked the punch of the Zero - but it was "almost as great a technial surprise" - and "no Allied fighter (at the time this statement was made) could stay with it in a turn." For this reason we will add a boost to this fighters maneuverability rating.

RE: Ki-43
That's certainly fair. Someone posted some WW2 comparative trial docs recently (maybe on the Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich forum?) which would back this up. If I have time later tonight I'll see if I can find it and post a link.

10-43(Info Only)..The flaps were originally put on the P 38 to counter compressability problems due to the planes inability to recover from sustained dives, (suffered on the earlier models, sometimes fatally).
The pilots killed were usually the newer ones who did not realize if they stopped pulling back on the stick, and actually pushed forward, it would allow the plane to recover itself and make the compressability factor on the wing decrease sufficient to allow the stick to then be brought back, (at a lower altitude.)
Any flap would assist in maneuverability in some way, and none as effective as the Ki 43 "butterfly flap" which was shaped like 2 pancakes under the pilot and extending to both wings approx 6-7 feet out on each wing.
The thing was supposedly the inspiration for the floating tailplane on the F86......

The RAF pilots flying the Mohawk IV in India often found that they could keep up with the Oscars in a turn, if they kept their speed up between 180-200 mph. I realise that it is low for a statistical analysis and it's not 'official' but I feel it's still something to bear in mind.

RE: RHS 7,7897 development thread
In AIO and CAIO, numbers of ships have been 9999ed out (or in two cases, CVEs built sooner as tankers). This so that ships
of most marginal value will not have their cost get in the way of more useful (to AI) ships. In particular, end of war ships or
junk are not built for AI use. A few ships with associated air groups have the air elements 9999ed out - or in two cases - replaced by
land based ASW air units.

what means 9999ed out?
Without any doubt: I am the spawn of evil - and the Bavarian Beer Monster (BBM)!

Axis Allied air forces have more rational initial settings and experience levels.
A few eratta were found and worked in to some scenarios - notably maneuverability for Ki-27 and/or Ki-44 II were at a previous
version level in a couple of cases - and are now current.

Also, what happens in an actual instance is not always an indicator of the limits of the aircraft. It is critically related to the skills of the pilot and the energy in a particular flight regime. It is almost unbelievably complicated - people get PhDs working on this stuff. We must use actual data at the limits (e.g. maximum speed, rate of climb at sea level, etc) - but planes almost never really are at their limits. Max data is an indicator of what may be done. What is really done is not nearly as clear an indicator - because pilots haver real tactical, operational and skill factors imposed on what they are asking of an aircraft at any given moment. We saw obsolete and obsolescent fighters doing things we never imagined - and winning air combats consistently - month after month - vs all Allied air forces and both USN and USAF in particular - in Viet Nam ( a topic which gets me very sour responses when I talk about real air combat with pilots who have never seen serious opposition in the air).
Never mind our planes cost vastly more money, were far newer and better equipped, and could in terms of most measures outperform their opponents, certain attributes were superior for them (notably horizontal maneuverability and off platform sensors combined with radio guidance of where to fly) - so paper performance and actual combat performance can be dramatically different. Ironically, until the introduction of the MiG-21, the enemy preferred the OLDEST of his available fighters - the MiG-17 - because its advantage in "maneuverability" was greater than the newer Mig-19. It was "only" a gunfighter "in the missile age" - but it was winning - and we were not. Over the longer term, we were fought remarkably even in the air - and USAF never did get any aces (while many or even most enemy pilots became aces in that conflict). USN got just 4 (or 6 if you count non pilots in the plane).
