campaign '43
Well, I finally found a way to make this scenario interesting as German player. Despite massive Soviet armor, you can do some real damage, even around Kursk. (at least against an AI Stalin!)
My specific question in regard to this campaign is around special supply or supplying the 3 corps defending east of the Crimea on the rail hexes. Other than airlift, how does special supply work effectively there. Do you have to have an OP in the adjacent HQ of 60 or more for SS to even be effective? My whole strategy in this game is to merely defend there with armor and adequate Rumanian troops in reserve and make a go of it after the Kursk breakthrough with my panzers. Time is of course, not on my side.

Montenegro

If I got your question right, special supply will not help much in the bridgehead east of the Crimea (I believe this is what you are wanting to supply right?). The effectiveness of special supply is related to the SL of the hex the unit is in, so if it is at SL0, there is no effect I think. At SL1 the effect is very small, compared to SL6.

Rick,
Yes. I'll just have to sacrifice some more JU's for airlift. I really didn't think that it was effective with special supply. Yet another pitfall of invasion I guess...
Thanks

Montenegro,
The german player can do very damage to the soviet forces in the 43 campaign and force an a draw (but for the germans is a victory if soviets not conquer Berlin indeed) if you play to the end.
The key : no Kursk, a major retreat of the infantry in the South (redeploying behind the rivers ) and make a mobile defense with the powerful panzer korps.Very effective. Always have worked in a PBEM game
Also is very important a good use of the Luftwaffe over the Allied strategic bombing .

Josan,
I have played about 5 different times (learning/cheating) this scenario, and to prove how bad the AI can be, in one game I knocked out 3 of his HQ's w/ planes all at the cost of 1 corps of mobile infantry, took Kursk, cut off 6 armies and destroyed 1,500 tanks/afvs. The Luftwaffe is still lethal in this year as well. Of course, I bit the experimental bullet and tried to do a drastic panzer swing from Kursk and trap his armies south of Moscow, but mass industry and a heavy smowflake beats a driven horse every time! The more I play the AI---and those days are nearing an end---the more I think it's impossible for a good German player to be stopped by a less superior Soviet adversary in '41-'42. I really think the game should reflect some more tenacity in the Soviet side where they fought hard (especially in the South). I don't think they deserve a better fate earlier than '43 for their air force, though.

Yes, The Luftwaffe can gain the air superiority on the 43 but its very difficult (if not impossible) to gain as german doing Zitadelle.
Not count the games against the IA is not a good adviser. If germans attack in Kursk there is a good chance to the soviets to beat them. A historical way. But as a german player I prefer not make Kursk.

I played 43' campaign as Soviet against Lorenzo ( sadly we didnt manage to finish) and he used withdraw tactic. Very difficult for Soviets, I think we would end up with a draw, because I couldnt advance fast enough. But in 1944 sky hasnt see any Luftwaffe at the front - he had to transfer all fighters to defend motherland, but we had heavy air fights in 1943.
One day I'll try again with 3.2 version, I guess.

I really think as the game stands now, the '43 scenario is the most interesting to play as German because you still can launch offensives, test ground mobility, and work on defense as the Soviet armor keeps coming.

Montenegro,
I try to lower my number of PBEMs, but on the second thought instead of waiting for one of current games to finish I can suggest the following : currently I can do about 2-3 turns a week (sometimes more, but cant promise). So if you accept this, we can start a game right away. Ver 3.2, Lorenzo House rules ( with modyfied interdiction rule - max 2 interdictions per unit per turn, regardless of from how many HQ they are done), both players are free to play with production any way they want. If you want any other modifications to rules I am opened for ideas. If it is ok for you just send me first turn.
