I understand that this can not be used for anything else but this role BUT don't you think that these air groups should be allowed to be "trained".

Sounds reasonable to me. Though, I don't think any amount of training would have saved them from the hoards of red fighters lying in wait.
What cheeses me off is that only half of them go on a resupply mission while the rest do...whatever

They gain experience when executing airlift transport missions too.
