In case you have been wondering why I have been so quiet...

Just a quick post to let you guys know that unfortunately I am having some disturbing health issues that are a bit distracting. For about a month I have been very light-headed and just not feeling "right."

Had my blood pressure checked and it's 165/95 which is pretty high. I could not even go to work today I was so dizzy, so I have a Dr. appt next Friday. Until then I will likely diagnose myself with every disease known to man :)

This really sucks. I am not overweight, and am quite active athletically, but something is most certainly wrong, I just don't feel "right."

Please bear with me, as this now pretty much has me worried and I just can't seem to concentrate.

Take whatever time you need and get yourself right. The fact that Johan Santana is headed to the Mets and not the Yankees should drop you a few points right there : )

Here's to hoping it's some sort of inner ear infection/virus, because I feel like I am going to pass out about 25 times a day.

I'm struggling.

That said, yes thank god Santana went to the NL [:)]

If you are taking cholesterol medicine that may be the problem. I was taking Zocor at one time and it gave me symptoms resembling leukemia. All my blood levels were markedly reduced and I felt like I had Mono. My doctor finally determined it was the Zocor and after a couple weeks off the meds I was fine.

I've never taken any meds for anything.

Last year I had my chol checked and it was perfect.

Ok, Shaun, chronic high blood pressure can cause all sorts of problems. Your doc will probably recommend some blood tests. Having to take meds for hypertension (blood pressure pills) is common. I take them, and it isn't a big deal.

Listen to me -- I've been a Type I diabetic for most of my life, and take two insulin injections each and every day. Don't get freaked out over the prospect of having to pop a daily pill, OK?

Stress???

It like to killed me last year (oil business -- 57 years old). I use to do everything myself with regard to my job. I worked 14 to 16 hours a day. I couldn't sleep and at night I couldn't keep still -- I jerked all the time. Drank 2 to 3 beers a day.

I then:

1) Hired a girl to help me.
2) Started walking my dog twice a day for 30 minutes (1 hour total).
3) Either rode a bike, shot basketball or walked on the treadmill 40 minutes a day.
4) "One" glass of red wine (no beer)
5) Started going to bed at 9:30 pm and made sure that I got 8 hours sleep.

Now:

1) I've lost 30 pounds.
2) My sugar, chol and heart rate are now perfect (heart rate 53).
3) My dog feels good.
4) My girl loves her job (and my customers love her better than me).
5) I don't jerk at night -- or at anytime.

And the funny thing is -- I make just about the same amount of money (I really don't care about this as much as my health) and I feel good again.

However, I still need to find time for golf and PS. Shaun -- watch the "stress". Good luck.

Beach,

Congrats on that! In my case, no, I really don't feel stressed out at all. Well, now I do :)

This totally sucks. I feel terrible. Hopefully doc next week will figure it out.

Shaun,

I wish you well and good luck on your upcoming doctor's visit.

Please let a complete stranger offer you some good advice - DO NOT hesitate to get a 2nd opinion if you are uncomfortable or unsure of your Drs prognosis.

My wife went through an ordeal some years ago where it seemed the Dr was only guessing even after tests were performed. We went to several specialists and they all said it was something different according to their specialty! We were told it was onset of Multiple Sclerosis, fibro myalgia (sp?), some kind of degenerative nerve condition but finally found out it was a herniated disc in her back, probably from horseback riding since childhood.  I made the Dr show me on the x-rays-MRIs because I demanded absolute proof before we moved ahead with surgery.

The point being, get a 2nd opinion. Sometimes Drs are just guessing or they just throw drugs at you hoping something works![:-]

What he said. Sometimes even third opinions are a good idea.

My "layman's diagnosis" based on the symptoms you describe, is hypertension. But I am probably full of it...I'm not a doctor, and I don't play one on TV. I am married to a nurse, however, and I can "talk shop" with her pretty well.

Git-er-done, Shaun. Health is the only thing that really matters.

Shaun,
I had a scare like this a few months back. I've never had high blood pressure before. 185 over 95!!!!!! Scared the h--l out of me. Come to find out that the over the counter cold medicne I took was the cause. So I'll suffer with a cold from now on, no more taking that stuff.

Shaun,

I remember a few versions ago when you got stressed out over a release. I used to get the same way when I would release golf courses for Jack Nicklaus Golf.

I'd advise not putting a deadline on your next PS release. I know that once you reach 40 that your body doesn't recover from day to day stress as it does when one is in their 20s or 30s. (That's why we need to have kids by then! My wife and I waited too late -- I still have a daughter in HS.)

Anyway, relax -- I'm you're no doubt OK. Spring training is coming!

Shaun:

As KG said it could be a ton of different things. I have high blood pressure and take Lisinipril everyday and it is fine unless I am completely stressed or just get overly tired. Also have Type II diabetes which I got in my early 50's so sadly it is just an indication you are getting older and you don't bounce back as quickly and completely as you used to. Hopefully it is nothing more than a little hyper-tension, easily dealt with and kept under control.

My best, David

Be careful with Bustoff's "layman's diagnosis", it might say that you're a Center Fielder when you were really a Catcher.

No.

Wait.

That's a Lahman's Diagnosis.... sorry.
