What Operating Systems do you use to play the game?

This new Commander's Edition of Harpoon Classic includes land units, neutral and unknown sides, an improved radar and area ECM model and a host of other improvements. Rounding that out are over 200 scenarios and the WestPac Battleset. Try out this great new version of the classic Harpoon!

What Operating Systems do you use to play the game?

Post by TonyE »

One of the future developments of HC I would like to undertake involves using some programming libraries that do not work on Win95/98/ME/NT4. This poll will help guide the effort and possibly delay it if many players are adamant about using Win98 until drivers become impossible to find.

If you play on say both XP and 98 and would be okay only playing on XP, please then only answer that you use XP. The key operating systems for moving forward are XP and Vista, 2000 is 'on the bubble'.

Thank you for voting. More in depth comments are always appreciated.

For those wondering, the first library is OpenMP to retrofit multi-threading to the game to take advantage of multi-core and multi-processor systems. Past that will probably be XML libraries (many of which do not have an OS restriction).

I mainly play HC on 32-bit Vista and would not be greatly upset if support for everything older than XP was dropped in future patches.  (FYI, the first patch does not remove any OS support)

Same here, Win XP, no plan to upgrade to vista, I'll wait Windows 7 in 2009.

However HCE works also under Linux + WINE (Kubuntu 7.10)  [:D]

I don't play yet, (still financially challenged and waiting for physical shipment to get sorted out), but when I do, it'll be on 32-bit xp and have no plans on going to vista, even when I buy the new PC for WITP-AE.

Move forward. XP is seven years old now, no need to stick in the past. Playing on XP, have no intention of upgrading to Vista for my current PC, and probably won't buy a new one for at least a few years.

I've played on both XP Home, Vista Basic, and Vista Ultimate.  Anyone in the market for a gaming computer?  I got a few! [:'(]

Hi all,

switched to Vista a month ago as it was preinstalled on the new PC I bought. No troubles with HCE running under Vista.

Hehe, as a person who has been forced to deal with Vista at work, I can safely tell you I will be staying with XP for a long, long time. I personally loathe Vista, finding it takes me as much as 5 times as long to work on one of those machines as the XP machines.

It is nice to find out that HCE works under non-MS OS's though.

I have played on my Vista laptop with no issues, but generally I don't use my laptop for gaming (because it has Vista and it DOESN'T have 4GB RAm!!)...

XP SP2 is my preferred OS

Vista 32 doesn't effectively support a full 4 GB of ram. You have to subtract the video ram and any other ram added by other cards. It ALL gets counted as part of the 4 Gb. Upgrade to Vista 64 - If you gotta have Vista you might just as well go all the way. be a couple of years before that is out moded and it does support more memory that most of the MBs available. More that any I want to afford anyway. All our machines at work are going to Vista Ultimate 64 & the one Vista machine I have here will as well as soon as I finish saving the extra. I have 2 older XP machines here as well - thjey will be Linux so I guess I will get to try the Wine. :-) What kind of cheese is recomended with Unbuntu ??? [:D]

Thank you to those of you who voted, I am very surprised that there are not still a herd of players using win9x as their main HC machines.  I feel much better about raising the minimum future operating system to Windows 2000.
