Destroyer classes

Post by SuluSea »

G'day all,

I've been trying to set up my TFs with destroyers that are better equipped for the task at hand. I'm playing in September of '42 at the moment.

This is what I have for the destroyer classes. I understand they could be used for other tasks but considering their armament the job they are better suited for is.....

AA-
Porter Class
Bristol Class

Anti Ship/Anti Sub-
Farragut Class- more or less a DE?

Benham Class
Benson Class
Sims Class

Anti Ship-
Mahan Class

Anti Ship/ Anti Sub/ AA-
Fletcher Class

Am I off base in this assessment?

Is their anywhere I can find this info?

When these ships get sent back to Pearl will the older destroyers get sent back with updated assets or will Fletcher class be sent back as their replacements?

As always thanks for any info provided. This site and the members have been a big help to my gaming and anderstanding the detail in UV.[&o]

I'm not completely sure what info it is you're looking for, but here's the most general of information about the destroyer classes that I can recall:

Look at the ships in question right on your game screen.  Click on the ship's name and look at the # of torpedo tubes or gun tubes and their sizes, look at the AA rating and look at the # of depth charges.  A good rule of thumb for ASW is DDs with 2 racks of DCs like a Fletcher class.  Don't forget that this is a game and that the data base of it outweighs all other sources of info,

For the Japanese destroyers I made this little chart. It´s self explanatory. Print it on a page and click it in a 3 ring binder. That´s what I do and shuffle through it as I take my turns.

Ike, why did you rated AKITSUKI class DDs as poor AA ships? At least historically, these vessels were intended to this very role - as CV escorts. Their 3,9"/L65 guns turned out to be one of the better anti-aircraft weapons of the Nihon Kaigun. And in the game they have a decent flak (AA) value of about 304. Not too bad (for IJN DDs)...
Did you´ve had some bad experiences regarding these rare ships?

I don´t know about the historic capabilities. I draw my rating from the in game capabilities. The AKITSUKI class only has 4 AA guns. So I rate it ¨poor¨

This is in comparison to say the HATSUHARU DD class that has 22 AA guns. So quite a bit of difference. Hence the difference in ratings.

OK RGIJN, I see what you´re saying. That 3,9"/L65 gun has a pretty low rate of fire but that class does have 8 of them and they hit harder. Let me set up some test in the scenario editor to check how efective that dual purpose gun is under air attack.

I´m thinking the class will get upgraded to good. Let me run a couple test and see what they show with that gun.

I´ll do the cruisers next.

Test one...

CV Shokaku
CV Zuikaku
CVL Shoho

escorted by the 7....Akitsuki Class DD´s

95 Dauntless Dive Bombers attacked over the course of one turn. The Japanese had no CAP, Partly Cloudy skies, Distance two hexes.

10 Dauntless Dive Bombers were destroyed.
67 Damaged.

Test two...

CV Shokaku
CV Zuikaku
CVL Shoho

Also escorted by 7 Destroyers...

2 Shiratsuyu Class DD´s (Excellent AA Rating)
2 Hatsuharu Class DD´s (Excellent AA Rating)
3 Fubuki Class DD´s (Good AA Rating)

85 Dauntless Dive Bombers attacked over the course of one turn. The Japanese had no CAP, Partly Cloudy skies, Distance two hexes.

22 Dauntless Dive Bombers were destroyed.
78 Dauntless Dive Bombers were damaged.

My conclusion.

Although the Akitsuki Class DD has only 4 AA guns the 8 special dual purpose main guns makes up quite well for this. However this gun does not go so far as replacing the 22 AA guns
(Excellent Rating) of the Hatsuharu or Shiratsuyu class.

Certainly the Akitsuki Class performed much better than say the Kagero Class would have (poor AA rating) and its paultry 4 AA guns to shoot at aircraft.

So I will change the Akitsuki Class from a poor AA rating to a ¨Good¨ AA rating, it´s much better than a Kagero Class but worse than a Hatsuharu Class for air defense. So it´s in the middle.

Be very aware when putting Task forces together, I suggest print and use this chart. It´s much simpler and faster than clicking through the screens and looking at all the numbers data. Don´t just slap TF´s together. You might slap together a carrier task force with 60+ AA guns when you could have 260+ AA guns! You might have destroyers hunting subs that are no good for this purpose.

I´m working on the chart for Japanese cruisers now. I´m doing this on excel, when I get all the Japanese Classes done I´ll post the file for download somewhere.

Well I did just find this about the interface...

If you go to the form new task force, then choose a task force type, carrier group for example, after the list of names comes in ships selection you can right click on the name and get this screen (see below). It has a weapon list, class with an AA rating...Maybe that´s old hat for some but I didn´t know you could do that in the interface from that screen.

Keep in mind this is a generic weapon listing though. For example I rate the Kagero ¨Good ASW¨ and it shows 2 ASW while some listing as having 4 ASW I rate as ¨poor¨ It seems thery´re counting the launchers here.

The reason I rate the Kagero ¨Good¨ at 2 ASW launchers and some of the others with a 4 ASW launchers as ¨Poor¨ comes deeper in the weapons database and the type of depth charges carried.

Anything carrying that Type 91 Depth Charge is probably not much good for ASW outside coastal and shallow water hexes.

Same as this generic listing with the torpedos, some show 8 torpedos launchers but this does not tell the whole story on capability as there are huge differences in Japanese torpedo types and what each class carries.

Did you know you could go through and right click on the ship names under ships selection DEB and it would bring up that font information? I didn´t. I don´t recall seeing that in the manual..I always went through left clicking one by by one and as that takes you to a seperate screen it´s a lot more time consuming.

I did, actually. But it brings up just a few rudimentary facts only.
THX for the cruiser list too! Did you´ve ever got the KATORI or one of the LongLance monsters of the KITAKAMI class released from Japan?
Are you working on a BB list now?

Yes I´m going to cover all the classes...

KATORI & KITAKAMI? Are these classes in the UV database? I haven´t seen them.

The Katori is a class of light cruiser. The Kitakami is a light cruiser of the Kuma class. Both should be available ( timescale wise ). No ideal re the database though.

Further to the above. I had a look at this tonight. The Katori ( ship ) & the Kitakami are both on ALL on the Scenario databases.
Katori ( ship ) @ #70 & Kitakami at #93.
