Plans for multiplayer support for HCE?

This new Commander's Edition of Harpoon Classic includes land units, neutral and unknown sides, an improved radar and area ECM model and a host of other improvements. Rounding that out are over 200 scenarios and the WestPac Battleset. Try out this great new version of the classic Harpoon!

Plans for multiplayer support for HCE?

Post by invernomuto »

Hi to all,
a little question to the devs: is there any plan to introduce multiplayer support for HCE in a future patch / version of the game?

I think it's a future goal, from what I remember the GREEN side is a small step towards this.

Yes, but I wouldn't hold my breath.  If it ever happens it will probably be more than 2 years from now.

What could arrive sooner...(though still too far away to give any assurance it will happen)

The ability to turn off the AI functions for multiple sides, i.e. enable multiple player sides.  This allows an umpire run games pitting human against human (against human?). Example: Brad loads up a scenario in HCE, he is the ‘umpire’.  Tony connects to Brad’s game with the remote viewer (no direct control over units).  Scott connects to Brad’s game with the remote viewer.  Tony will be relaying orders for the Blue side to Brad for input into the game, Scott will be relaying orders for the Red side to Brad for input to the game.  The game has two player sides (Red & Blue) for which Brad is entering the commands (also known as turning the AI player off).  Brad cannot modify the outcome of engagements, he can’t un-kill that F-15, he is just acting as player for two sides who are shouting orders into his ear.

What are your thoughts on the subject invernomutu (or anyone else)?

For instance, should we even bother with multiplayer?

Multiplayer is the best part of any good wargame.  Though there will always be far more people who only want to play the AI, the only real challenge will always be other human beings.

Agreed. Multiplayer is funnier and more challenging that playing vs an AI, even a good AI. I think that HCE NEED multiplayer support as soon as possible, it's a very good game (congrats to the devs) but with multiplayer it could become even better. Moreover, in 2008, multiplayer is a must in every computer game IMHO.
