AAR - Dec 41 to June 42
I always suspected that the Japanese AI in PacWar was pretty much preset to carry out a predefined invasion plan, then look out for a major carrier battle, then sit and wait.
While this is pretty historic, it also gives you the feeling that everything they do is somehow rather independent of what the human player actually does. Probably back then there was no other way to get the whole AI thing going, though.

Okay I've received an email from Admiral DadMan, who is going to take over as my relief CinC for this game.
I'm going to send him the save game files, so he will take over and continue to update the AAR to the end.
Thanks, Admiral, I will check back on the thread after you've had a chance to run things!!

Last time I checked, the forums were messed up.

Thank you dgaad, as your relief, I shall endeavor to carry on effectively and vigorously prosecute this war to its end.
That said, the following directives are issued:
To: Commanders, Pacific Ocean Areas, and Far East Command
From: DadMan, Adm CominCh
Re: Directives
Admiral Husband Kimmel is directed to relieve VAdm Halsey as ComSoPac. VAdm Halsey to assume command of TF 50 built around Lexington and Wasp. RAdm Spruance to begin work up the Org/Op plan for 5th Fleet.
Hornet is ordered to join TF50, and free Wasp to operate in the DEI theater.
All Major CinCPOA Fleet Units to rendezvous at Tinian for re-deployment to further operations. Due to the lack of staging bases, and the threat to the US/AUS convoy routes still posed, Right Hook will be modified as below:
CenPac will invade the Major Marshall Island Group as follows:
-33rd Inf Div to take Eniwetok from Wake... then take Jaluit from Eniwetok
-40th Inf Div to take Kwajalein from Wake... then take Maloelap from Kwajalein
-25th Inf Div to take Wotje from Pearl
SoPac will invade the Major Gilbert Island Group as follows:
-Americal Div to take Makin from Shortland
-37th Inf Div to take Tarawa from Guadalcanal
Gen MacArthur's Left hook will finish its movement with the capture of Lae and then hold for the next movement up the back of the New Guinea bird.
SEAC is directed to continue on to Singapore via Jitra/Signora and Haipong via Pnnom Phen/Saigon
CenPac is also directed to get off his **** yacht in TF51 (South Dakota Flag) and return to Pearl Harbor.
Dates for objectives will be set in the next 2 weeks

All long range bombers (B-17/B-24) will be re-deployed in to suppress enemy strong points on New Britian and in the Carolines. Although it is tempting to use strategic bombing of the Japanese Home Islands, CominCh has decided to overrule the staff, and only base short to intermediate range tactical bombers on Tinian to better neutralize enemy air bases in the region.
FLASH FLASH FLASH: Cmdr Rochefort at Hypo Intelligence tells me that the IJN has once again changed the keys to their JN-25 Naval code. He says it may be a few weeks before his team can recover them. The good news is that they were able to recover a good portion of the call signs (he says that Akagi's radio man thinks he playing a bass drum). The bad news is that Ultra intercepts will be few and far between for a while, which ComSubPac was using to great effect.
This change may or may not signal the beginning of a major move. Just where it may come is unclear, but there is considerable naval presence in the DEI at Tjilatjap...
The Gilberts Operation has been given the code name “Galvanic”.
The Marshalls Operation is code name “Flintlock”.
These are the logical next steps to widen the salient begun in Cave In’s Right Hook movement.
FLASH: Airfields and Base at Lae captured. Enemy resistance continues.
FLASH: TF54 (RAdm Wilkinson, Curtiss, flag) was struck by bombers from Kavieng as they unloaded at Lae. One transport was sunk and several transports suffered damage, but the troops were put ashore. Once ashore, they assisted in capturing Lae under LGen Moreshead.
In light of the attack on TF54, Heavy Bombers of 5th, 7th, 19th, and 44th BGs have been stationed at Shortland, and tasked with pounding Kavieng. TF66 (RAdm Scott, California, flag) has been tasked with pounding the airfield as well as the depot.
FLASH: Tinian Secured, resistance eliminated after bitter fighting by 2 Mar Div, 2 Raid Bn, in concert with 24th Inf Div and 31st Inf Div, all under the command of LGen Geiger.
FLASH: IJN supply TF headed for Singora was struck hard by RAF bombers based in Bangkok. As many as 15 ships were reported sunk in 2 strikes.
SEAC LGen Alexander reports that it may take him as long as 3 weeks to clear Bangkok of the enemy...
The Fleet Re-organization movement is well underway. The fast carrier forces TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Lexington flag), and TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise flag) have been re-allocated. TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) is enroute to Ambon to begin operations in the DEI.
The fast battleships are set up in Battle Line as TF56 (RAdm Lee, South Dakota flag) with orders to support landings and engage enemy surface forces when necessary. The Pearl Harbor survivors have been formed into 2 other fire support TFs to deliver gunfire for the upcoming invasions. These are TF58 (RAdm Kinkaid, Pennsylvania flag) and TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia, flag).
There was some initial concern about the effect on AA defense for the Fast Carriers without Battleships in their screens for support. Should AA defense prove problematic, this issue can be re-visited.
Transports are beginning to stage at the jumping off points for Galvanic/Flintlock. We expect to set a firm date in 2 weeks.
Finally, Essex has arrived in San Francisco, and will be making her way west this week to Pearl for additional training. She will deploy by 1 June.
Good Hunting

AAR 2MAY43
The fast carrier forces conducted operations in support of preliminary shore bombardment of certain enemy bases in the Marshalls.
At Eniwetok, TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Lexington flag) provided air cover for TF56 (RAdm Lee, South Dakota flag) and TF58 (RAdm Kinkaid, Pennsylvania flag) while they proceeded to pound the installations.
At Kwajalein, TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise flag) provided cover for TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag). Mitscher’s carriers also pounded nearby Wotje, causing considerable damage.
Both Carrier Task Forces were struck by enemy air, but beat off the attacks handily. There will be much relief when the Hellcats are available en masse in the coming weeks. Currently, Corsairs are deemed unsuitable for carrier operations, and therefore will be allocated to the Marine VMF squadrons.
Kavieng is still proving to be a hotbed of activity. The airfields and depot were plastered by bombers from Wewak, Shortland, and Green Is., as well as gunfire from TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag). A few more weeks of bombing should neutralize it.
Enemy resistance continues at Lae. LGen Moreshead is requesting naval gunfire support if any is available.
FLASH: Another IJN supply TF headed for Singora was struck hard by RAF bombers based in Bangkok. As many as 6 ships were reported sunk in 2 strikes.
SEAC LGen Alexander reports that he has received 4 more divisions into Bangkok, but supply issues hamper readiness levels…
FLASH: Off Singora, TF67 (RAdm Palliser, RN, HMS Formidable flag) caught a transport TF (VAdm Kurita, IJN) sinking a reported 6 vessels…

Operation Galvanic will jump off this week. CenPac fleet units will act in support of the landings. They will then come about and support Flintlock. This actually works out well, as Flintlock will suffer a partial delay due to lack of sealift forces. CenPac Fleet units will be able to support both operations.
Americal Div embarked in TF61 (RAdm Turner, President Jackson flag) will invade Tarawa. TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Lexington flag) will provided air cover and TF56 (RAdm Lee South Dakota flag) will provide gunfire support.
37th Inf Div is embarked in TF65 (RAdm Barbey, President Adams flag) destination Makin I. TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise flag) will provide cover for TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag) providing gunfire support.
Flintlock will begin early from Johnston I.
7th Inf Div arrived at Johnston I. ahead of schedule, and is therefore dispatched for Maloelap aboard TF69 (RAdm Kinkaid, President Lincoln flag) . TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag) will provide air support with TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag).
Here is another example that in war, one must be tactically flexible to meet strategic objectives.
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) is now directed toLae to provide gunfire support for LGen Moreshead.
TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) is in the Ambon area, and will begin operations in the DEI next week.
RN Fast carrier forces TF67 (RAdm Palliser, RN, HMS Formidable flag) will operate off Bangkok in support of the ground forces there.

Operation Galvanic jumped off this week.
FLASH: Tarawa invasion repulsed.
Tarawa was the objective of Americal Div. No sooner had they stepped off of the transports of TF61 (RAdm Turner, President Jackson flag) than IJA’s 67th NGU greeted them with a withering fire. TF56 (RAdm Lee South Dakota flag) providing gunfire support could do little to free the pinned down men on the beach. Americal was forced to withdraw to the transports and call for reinforcements. LGen Vandegrift, USA, has taken the men back on to the beach in the meantime, preferring to fight it out on the beaches until help arrives. TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Lexington flag) continues to stand off and provide air cover.
FLASH: Makin Secured.
By contrast 37th Inf Div easily dispatched an IJN Construction Battalion on Makin I from TF65 (RAdm Barbey, President Adams flag). TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise flag) will provided cover for TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag) providing gunfire support.
FLASH: Maloelap Secured.
7th Inf Div arrived at Maloelap aboard TF69 (RAdm Kinkaid, President Lincoln flag) to an IJN Construction Battalion as well. Suported by TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag) with air cover and TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag) with gunfire, it was a pushover.
Kavieng has been neutralized by bombers from Wewak, Shortland, and Green Is.
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) delivered gunfire support to Lae with little effect.
TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) is now operating from Ambon.
RN Fast carrier forces TF67 (RAdm Palliser, RN, HMS Formidable flag) is operating off Bangkok in support of the ground forces there and struck targets of opportunity.
BB New Mexico has finally limped into Pearl Harbor for repairs and upkeep.

All units involved in Galvanic/Flintlock will converge on Tarawa to secure that atoll. This includes TF61 (RAdm Turner, President Jackson flag), 37th Inf Div from TF65 (RAdm Barbey, President Adams flag), 7th Inf Div on TF69 (RAdm Kinkaid, President Lincoln flag).
Also directed are the Fast Carrier forces . TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Lexington flag), ). TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise flag), and TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag).
Gunfire support will come from TF56 (RAdm Lee South Dakota flag), TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag), and TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag)
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) will continue its gunfire support at Lae.
TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) will strike Kendari and retire to Timor, with an eye toward a possible strike on Tjilatjap later in the month.

Operation Galvanic wrapped up this week.
FLASH: Tarawa Secured.
Tarawa was finally taken by Americal Div., with help from 37th Inf Div. and 7th Inf Div. They easily dispatched of the 67th NGU supported by Fast Carrier forces of TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Lexington flag), TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise flag), and TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag). Effective gunfire support was delivered by TF56 (RAdm Lee South Dakota flag), TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag), and TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag)
Kavieng continues to be pounded by bombers from Wewak, Shortland, and Green Is.
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) still delivers gunfire support to Lae.
TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) struck Kendari, retiring to Timor after inflicting a small amount of damage. Wasp was the first Fleet Carrier to receive the new Grumman F6F Hellcats, to the great joy of RAdm Montgomery and the great consternation of the other Fast Carrier commanders.
FLASH: Bombers from Bangkok hammered an IJN supply TF under RAdm Kimura, IJN. 15 more ships were erased from Japan’s Merchant Marine.
RN Fast carrier force TF67 (RAdm Palliser, RN, HMS Formidable flag) continues to operating off Bangkok in support of the ground forces there and strike targets of opportunity.

Re: Next Week’s Directives
There will be a one-week respite before Operation Flintlock resumes.
Fast Carrier forces are directed to conduct raids on installations at Truk and Ponape in the Carolines.
TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Lexington flag), will strike Truk.
TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise flag) will strike Ponape.
TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag) will strike Jaluit.
TF56 (RAdm Lee South Dakota flag) will raid Eniwetok.
TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag) will raid Kwajalein.
TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag) will refit at Wake.
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) will continue its gunfire support at Lae.
TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) will strike Flores. There is some concern that Wasp could be mauled, but there is only one IJN carrier reported in the area, and the greatest threat is judged to be from the airfields at Batavia.
LGen Pownall will relieve LGen Alexander in Bangkok
LGen Slim will take command of SEAC’s 14th Army HQ.

Operation Flintlock continued this week.
FLASH: Wotje landings repulsed.
1 Bde of 4th Marines stormed the beaches at Wotje only to be cut down by IJN 64th NGU. This was a spur of the moment operation supported by Fast Carrier forces of TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag). TF61 (RAdm Turner, President Monroe flag) was forced to re-embark the troops, at which point LGen Vandegrift took them back to the beaches. The cry for help has gone out, and will be delivered next week. Meantime, 1/4th must hold.
Meantime, TF50 with VAdm Halsey, Lexington (flag) with Yorktown gave Truk a good whacking, doing some serious damage to the supply depot and shooting down all the aircraft he could find.
Ditto TF51 with VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise (flag) with Hornet over at Ponape. On the way, Eniwetok was also pounded.
TF56 (RAdm Lee South Dakota flag) used his discretion and did not deliver gunfire to Eniwetok, deciding to retire to Wake instead.
TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag) gave Kwajalein a good shellacking tearing up the depot and a dozen planes to boot.
Kavieng continues to be pounded by bombers from Wewak, Shortland, and Green Is., reducing its ability to conduct air ops.
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) still delivers gunfire support to Lae, causing significant disruption.
FLASH: TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) intercepted a reinforcement convoy under RAdm Shibasaki. His 2 unescorted AP’s were summarily dispatched to the sea floor by Wasp’s strike planes.
FLASH: Bombers from Bangkok again hammered an IJN supply TF, this time under VAdm Kurita, IJN. 20 more ships were sunk.
RN Fast carrier force TF67 (RAdm Palliser, RN, HMS Formidable flag) continued operating off Bangkok in support of the ground forces.
Bataan continues to hold out despite being pounded from Manila and frequent ground attacks.

In light of the recent difficulties landing on Wotje and Tarawa, ALL invasion TF's WILL include cargo ships when facing ANY opposed landing site. An evaluation of the successfull landings at Makin and Maloelap showed that we were fortunate that opposition was light.
Fast Carrier forces are directed to conduct raids on installations at Truk and Ponape in the Carolines.
TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Lexington flag), will strike Truk.
TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise flag) will strike Ponape.
TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag) will stand off Wotje.
TF56 (RAdm Lee South Dakota flag) will deliver fire support to Wotje.
TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag) will raid Kwajalein.
TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag) will raid Eniwetok.
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) will continue its gunfire support at Lae.
TF67 (RAdm Palliser, RN, HMS Formidable flag) is to strike the supply TF unloading at Singora.
TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) will strike Bali to see what they can stir up. There is some concern that Wasp could be mauled, but there is only one IJN carrier reported in the area, and the greatest threat is judged to be from the airfields at Batavia.
RAdm Fletcher will bring out the first of the light carriers Independence and Belleau Wood to Johnston I. There they will join up with Essex who is operating by herself in TF53.

Re: Next Week’s Directives

Operation Flintlock continued this week.
FLASH: Wotje Secured.
The balance of 4th Marines joined up with 1 Bde 4th on the beaches at Wotje to wipe out IJN 64th NGU. Also thrown in for good measure were 7th Div, 37th Div, and Americal Div. They were supported by Fast Carrier forces of TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag) with TF56 (RAdm Lee, South Dakota flag) and bombers from Tarawa and heavies from Johnston Is.
LGen Vandegrift took heavy losses due to the impromptu nature of the landings.
VAdm Sherman now counts Essex (flag), and light carriers Independence and Belleau Wood under his command in TF53.
Meantime, TF50 with VAdm Halsey, Lexington (flag) with Yorktown gave Truk another good whacking, doing some serious damage to the supply depot.
Ditto TF51 with VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise (flag) with Hornet over at Ponape.
TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag) gave 61st NGU on Kwajalein a good shellacking tearing up the depot and a few hundred men.
TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag) stirred up 68th NGU on Eniwetok.
Kavieng continues to be pounded by bombers from Wewak, Shortland, and Green Is., reducing it ability to conduct air ops.
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) still delivers gunfire support to Lae, causing significant disruption.
FLASH: TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) pounded Flores again, this time shooting about 10 planes out of the sky and wrecking more than 50 on the ground.
FLASH: Bombers from Bangkok again hammered an IJN supply TF, this time under RAdm Shibasaki, IJN fresh from being fished out of the water near Flores (courtesy of Wasp). 20 more ships were sunk.
FLASH: RN Fast carrier force TF67 (RAdm Palliser, RN, HMS Formidable flag) also hit the supply TF at Signora, claiming 4 ships, and then VAdm Kurita’s supply TF as well, accounting for another 5 ships
Bataan continues to hold out despite being pounded from Manila and frequent ground attacks.

Re: Next Week’s Directives
Fast Carrier forces are directed to continue raids on installations at Truk and Ponape in the Carolines, as well as support the next moves in Operation Flintlock.
VAdm Leary and VAdm Tisdale are bringing up supply convoys to support the 2nd part of Flintlock. They should be arriving at Wotje next week
TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Lexington flag), will strike Truk.
TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise flag) will strike Ponape.
TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag) will strike Jaluit (we suspect the 62nd NGU is there.)
TF56 (RAdm Lee South Dakota flag) will deliver a shoot to Jaluit.
TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag) will raid Eniwetok.
TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag) will raid Kwajalein.
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) will continue its gunfire support at Lae.
VAdm Willis, RN is bringing a massive supply convoy to Bankok to relieve the acute supply shortage there. This operation is considerably more risky than to simply off load the supplies at Moulemien, but the reward much greater. The forces in Bankok need a jump start, and this may provide the much needed boost.
TF67 (RAdm Palliser, RN, HMS Formidable flag) will strike Singapore to clear the path for that convoy.
TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) will strike Bali to see what they can stir up. There is some concern that Wasp could be mauled, but there is only one IJN carrier reported in the area, and the greatest threat is judged to be from the airfields at Batavia.

TF51 with VAdm Mitscher, Enterprise (flag) with Hornet worked over Ponape along with B-17’s from Wotje absolutely tearing up the facilities and depot
TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag) stirred up 61st NGU and the airfield on Kwajalein

Kavieng continues to be suppressed by bombers from Wewak, Shortland, and Green Is.
TF66 (RAdm Scott, California flag) still delivers gunfire support to Lae, causing significant disruption.
FLASH: TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) struck Bali, and Bali struck back. Despite downing or destroying more than 30 aricraft, bombers got thru Wasp’s CAP to stick a “fish” in her. She retired to Timor and is operational, so she remains on station.
FLASH: Bombers from Bangkok continue to hammer IJN supply TFs under VAdm Kurita and RAdm Mori with 10 more ships sunk.
ComSubPac reports excellent hunting since the patrol line was set up between Iwo Jima and Samar last month. To date, the Empire has lost 614 MCs, over 100 in the last month.

FLASH FLASH FLASH: Battle Off Tjilatjap
FLASH: Wasp lost.
TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Wasp flag) never had a chance. En route to strike Tjilatjap, it beat off 3 strikes from Soerabaja, downing 10 aircraft. Approaching their launch point, they were pounced on by Akagi and Ryuho . 2 Vals hit Wasp with 250kg bombs and a Kate added a torpedo, which sealed her fate.
FLASH FLASH FLASH: Naval Battle of Tjilatjap
FLASH: TF72 (RAdm Montgomery, Indianapolis flag) fought a retirement action against a superior force. Unfortunately, 6 of the enemy ships were BBs, and two were reported to be Yamato and Musashi . Although they put up a brave fight, Canberra, Indianapolis, Portland, Phoenix, Marblehead, Leander, Java, and De Ruyter were lost. Perth, Achilles and 7 DDs are homeward bound, although the first named are heavily damaged. Our prayers are with those brave men who gave their lives, and those who struggle to make it home…
Operation Bellybutton was successful.
FLASH: Ponape Secured.
37Inf Div, 7th Inf Div, Americal Div, and 4th Mar Div landed at Ponape supported by TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Enterprise flag) TF60 (RAdm Ainsworth, West Virginia flag).
FLASH: Marcus invaded.
33rd Inf Div landed on Marcus supported by TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Lexington flag), TF53 (VAdm Sherman, Essex flag), and TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag).
FLASH: ComSubPac reports 10 ships sunk this week.
Kavieng continues to be suppressed by bombers from Wewak, Shortland, and Green Is.
FLASH: Lae secured.
Long and bitter fighting came to an end at Lae with the arrival of 1st Armoured (AUS).
FLASH: Bombers from Hong Kong and Nanning claimed a CL, a DD, and 6MCS under VAdm Kurita and RAdm Mori.
FLASH: RAdm Mori was hit once again by bombers from Bangkok, losing a DE and 5 MCS.

RE: CARRIERS
Gosh, u have so many TFs esp carrier forces......how many carriers do u place in a TF? I used 2 put 6CVs and 2CVLs (USA)= 3 TFs and 6CVs(RN).....which is better? many little carier force or a few superpowerful carrier force?
Blessed be the Lord my God who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle

RE: CARRIERS
I had 2 CV's per TF so I could spread my presence, yet still be effectice. Japanese airpower was weak, so I knew I could do that. Were I going against stronger Airdomes, I would have concentrated my carriers more which, actually I just did.Originally posted by Solinari
Gosh, u have so many TFs esp carrier forces......how many carriers do u place in a TF?
In the last AAR, you see that I've sent TF50 and 51 to Kendari. I stripped TF52 and 53 of air assets because I know I'm going up against strong air bases. I moved CV Bunker Hill with CVL Independenceto TF50, and CV Essex with CVL Princeton to TF51. Both of these TF's now have 10 Carrier points, which will make it harder to launch full strikes, but will offer strong (and still historically true) CAP.
Depending on what I have available, is how I allocate (I was actually trying to get Wasp sunk so I'd get her as an Essex Class replacement. Yes, sick, I know...
The combat resolution tables start cutting into air strikes beyond 8 points. Historically USN TF's comprised of 2 CV's and 2 CVL's.I used 2 put 6CVs and 2CVLs (USA)= 3 TFs and 6CVs(RN).....which is better? many little carier force or a few superpowerful carrier force?
(US/RN CV's =3pts, IJN CV's = 2pts, all CVL/CVE = 1pt.)
I don't like to have more than 3 CV's in one TF. I have a self-imposed limt of 10 carrier points or 4 carriers (3 CV/1 CVL, 2 CV/2 CVL). As the Allied player, I allocate one VF squadron on a CV or CVL in a TF to Night Missions when Kamikaze attacks are activated for Japan.
Historically, IJN only once had more than 4 CV's in a TF, and that was the Pearl Harbor strike.

Operation Screwdriver continues
FLASH: MGen H. M. Smith, USMC was KIA last week. He was last seen standing fast repelling a Banzai charge on his HQ in the Semper Fi tradition of the United States Marine Corps.
33rd Inf Div and 40th Inf Div were joined by the 3rd Marines on Marcus supported by TF53 (RAdm Reeves, Belleau Wood flag), TF54 (RAdm Fletcher, Chenango flag), and TF58 (RAdm Merrill, Pennsylvania flag). They are facing at least 2 under-strength IJA divisions. Unfortunately, we initially erred in our assessment of enemy strength on Marcus, which may necessitate further reinforcement. Underestimating that strength caused a violation of the principle of Superiority at Point of Contact.
TF50 (VAdm Halsey, Enterprise flag) and TF51 (VAdm Mitscher, Lexington flag), both of which are beefed up, repelled air strikes from Palau.
FLASH: Bombers from Bangkok claimed 1 DD, 2 DE and 9 MCS under VAdm Kurita and RAdm Shibasaki, whose charmed life ended in this attack.
FLASH: Hong Kong bombers put down another CL, AV, and 14 MCS.
