Puresim Players on Crack?

Post by Frozen Stiffer »

You think steroids is a problem, some Puresim players are actually smoking crack!! I'm reviewing the players in my 2010 Marlins squad who are on the last year of their contracts. I happen to come across Paul Byrd who I signed for a bargain-basement price of $50,000. He was originally signed with the intention of being a backup-to-the-backup starting pitcher, so it was never the plan for him to go to the majors. However, I have a few promising young starters that I did not want to disrupt in AAA or AA so I placed Byrd in Single-A. If he doesn't like it, tough gazungas- I pay more for dry cleaning than he's getting in a year. Anyway, playing with the Sinlge-A Jupiter Hammerheads, Paul Byrd is... >gulp< ... 1-10 with a 3.86 ERA. Ouch. Well, just to see what he would ask for an extension, I click on the button and... GASP!. He's smoking crack!!!!

I'm sorry, but you can't agree to a 1-year, $50-thousand dollar contract, go 1-10 with a 3.86 in SINGLE-A and then have the foul BALLS to ask for $3.8-million dollars for a 1-year extension. If he's not smoking crack, he should be.

Your Single-A team is on Jupiter? Maybe Paul's been inhaling too much methane, or ammonia, or whatever passes for atmosphere there. Well, let's see. Endurance of 2 and potential of 1, mediocre stuff and velocity...and he's 40 years old!!!!!! My advice: Laugh immoderately at his salary demand, then have him severely beaten...by Augustus Rainbolt. Alrighty, it looks like your association is becoming like real modern-day baseball. Hell, just look at the hefty contracts some of these players get. It's whatever the market will bear.

In a fashion, though, I side with the players, because the reserve clause system was ironclad for so many years.

Just wait out Mr. Byrd. I'm sure his demands will soften once he has a chance to cool his heels. He's in no position to bluster, "show me the money!". I'd just show his agent the door, and say, "don't let it smack you on the ass on your way out."

C'mon, he ain't Roger Clemens.

I can't read your posts at work any more, Bustoff. I laugh too loud and everyone looks at me.

I feel the same way. Paul Byrd is a talented and respected pitcher- you won't get an argument from me on this. However, I do not feel he "fits" the salary he is asking for. To be honest, if he were asking for a little less, I would give him fair consideration. I'm not bothered by the amount of his original signing- perhaps he was desperate for a chance to show his stuff? Perhaps he was more than happy to take a hit at first, knowing that he would be able to justify asking for more after his performance was recognized? I think he was applying the Loss Leader principle on himself.

Anyway, what I find difficult to swallow is that after a 1-10 performance in Single-A of all places... you can sleep at night asking for almost $4 million?

I agree with the above, it it seems right for today's baseball, the players run the asylum, the other day a pitcher signed who was like 1-4 4.5 era and signed for like 4 million per year on a 2 year deal, I just couldn't believe it. So just look at any major baseball site signings and you'll be amazed at what owners will sign players for
