Awaiting an Operational-sized WWII Game

Commander – Europe at War Gold is the first in a series of high level turn based strategy games. The first game spans WW2, allowing players to control the axis or allied forces through the entire war in the European Theatre.

Awaiting an Operational-sized WWII Game

Post by mussey »

Most excellant game and kudos to all who have made this possible. I no longer have to set-up my worn out Third Reich, with countless ours sorting/organizing counters. I like the fact that the game moves relatively quickly, and gives me a broad strategic view to the most dynamic & interesting theatre of gaming - Europe, WWII.

Now after cutting my teeth on this.....I'm ready for something more detailed (sorry folks). Maybe the definative operational-sized WWII computer wargame many advanced players would love to see. Grigby's 'War in Russia' would be a good model to base it upon. Hexes 15 - 20 miles; divisional based units, 2-4 to each Corp, one corp per hex; special units at brigade level; realistic air forces based at air fields; realistic naval forces that move in hexes; turn-based; scope of map: mid Atlantic to Urals, all of Norway to north or Sahara Africa, off-boxes for USA, Africa, and a whole bunch where the war was fought. Full production; technology tree; good supply; political/diplomatic rules; etc. The graphics need not be fancy, but the map should be polished (check out Anglo-German War). World in Flames looks good, (and I will buy it?) but does not go to the level I would like to someday see.

We all learn a great detail about a subject that is dear to our hearts, and we all want a way way to greatly intereact and test ourselves against the heros and villians of that time period. 'Simpler' and fun computer games such CEAW gets me in the ball game and allows me to play. I'm now ready for the next level - the one that will be the 'definative' WWII in Europe.

[Good folks, please pardon me if I stepped on anyone's toes, we are a band of brothers that love our craft, and help each other to better gaming[:)]]

Such a game would take 6 years to play - so you'll never see it.

Computer War in Europe by Decision Games is due out in the next several months. No computer opponent though.

In all due respect, have you heard of a nice little rendition of the Pacific campaign called "War in the Pacific"? Battalion/Brigade level; 12 hour turns; India to US, arctic to Tazmania. Check it out.[;)]

Me thinks it can be done!

Pzgndr, thanks for the link. [:)]I checked out the demo and the scale is about what I'm looking for! (About 20 mi/hex; div level). The map graphics looks abit lame?[>:]

Yes it's a terrific game!

However the full campaign has 1,378 turns and a PBEM game will take 4,134 days

That's that same I have encountered. That's why I go to 3-day turns which reduces the total turns for witp to about 480 turns - a huge difference.

Grigsby's/Matrix's War in Russia uses 20 mi.s/hex and 1 week turns. That's excellent for a div/corp game but still strategic enough to cover the whole operational theatre of Europe if one were to be created. At this scale, the game would move at a nice pace and would more realistically portray the German invasion of Norway, the Low Lands, and France. Just a thought - party on[:)]

Map graphics in the CWiE screenshots are probably from a beta version. I would suspect that these will not be the finished graphics when the game comes out this year. Even if they were then someone would mod them....everything gets modded now.

Where they said it has been updated for DOS 6, I stopped reading.

Huh? The Decision Games link never says DOS 6; this is a Windows-based update of the old DOS-based computer version of the WiE board game.

It meets mussey's general criteria he was asking for. I would also hope the graphics are polished some more from what I've seen in the demo. But this is old corps grognard stuff; no AI or TCP/IP for the instant gameplay crowd. There's something to be said for the scale and pace of games like CEAW. [8D]

Yep this will be a Windows game. Straight conversion from a boardgame which makes it old corps.

IGO-UGO with turn phases (Move-Combat-Mech Move) Units have either one or two steps. Air and naval abstracted. I think its much the same scale/scope of CEAW but definitely has a different pace to it.

Much as I like CEAW I just wish they had added a limiter to the number of times a unit could be attacked. Sometimes it just seems a bit silly chasing an enemy unit and attacking it endlessly in order to destroy it. Fun and easy to play but not by pbem.
