Sub attack near Thursday Island at 49,90

Japanese Ships
AK Nissyu Maru
MSW Tokuho Maru #5
MSW Mejima Maru

Allied Ships
SS Whale

again, we miss...

there are dozens of ships at Thursday Island, including CL Kitakami and a CA (forgot which one it is). And I´m not able to launch a bomber strike from Cooktown as the morale of my bombers is far too low due to the last attack where again 90% came back damaged (though with only a dozen shot down). Hortlund "complained" in an email on how crippled the Japanese are in Nikmod but he isn´t cheering about the fact now, that I´m not attacking the dozens of ships at Thursday. He just doesn´t see or think about the fact that he completely CRIPPLED my bomber force there after just ONE round against his Cap and UBER FLAK... all he sees is that he doesn´t get the kills he´s used to from stock, like seeing 50 Oscars taking down 30 or 40 B-17s in one attack...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 51,91

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 69 [X(]

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
ML Ma 3, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
ML Ma 2, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet

I was more than amazed to see this big number of B-17s. Thought I would be down to 40 operational at the moment. Counted them up, 64 were operational after this turn so with 69 attacking, it seems ALL took off to finish the two small MLs... Though moral is still a problem, all the TFs that are at Thursday Island and Port Moresby are capped and are not attacked.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 23,23

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N Kate: 2 damaged

Allied Ships
DD Alden
DD Barker
DD John D. Edwards

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet

damn it, I forgot about three Flush Deck DDs that were sent out to attack an IJN sub... I will have to pay for that... though I also have to say that the position of the IJN CVEs just a couple of hexes away from 250 high experienced bombers is really optimistic... when seeing this TF popping up, I thought about it being already sunk by two huge strikes from India... no bomber launched... [8|][>:] Second time Hortlund is very lucky here, last time he parked his BBs in range of 50 torp bombers at Chandpur and to top it off he did the same at Diamond Harbour. This seems to be really suicide, he just has not to complain about getting his ships sunk when he moves within 6 hexes of 250 Allied bombers... and this has nothing to do with Nikmod, in some way, this is just plain stupid... sorry...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 23,23

Japanese aircraft
B5N Kate x 5

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N Kate: 2 damaged

Allied Ships
DD Alden, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet

first DD sunk...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 23,23

Japanese aircraft
E13A1 Jake x 2

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
DD John D. Edwards

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x E13A1 Jake bombing at 2000 feet

as usual, the CS are escorting the CVEs...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 23,23

Japanese aircraft
E7K2 Alf x 3

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
DD John D. Edwards

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x E7K2 Alf bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 23,23

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 4
B5N Kate x 18
E7K2 Alf x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N Kate: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
DD John D. Edwards
DD Barker, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet

and a second DD is sunk. The last one will retire at full speed...

Here´s the situation South of India. What the heck is Hortlund planning. Lots of subs around and now even his CVEs are parked at a "suicide position". I doubt this is going to be an invasion of India, this would just end the game with a Japanese surrender! [:D] So all I can think of is a supply or reinforcement convoy to Akyab or even an attempt to pick up the troops there. In all cases, it will be a very dangerous attempt if he really wants to move in range of 250 bombers and 350+ fighters and fighter bombers. Since a couple of turns, Hortlund has ordered LRCAP from Rangoon to Akyab. The airfield is still reported being 64% damaged with the airbase surely 100%. Perhaps the next couple of turns could get interesting. I have a lot of search planes in the air so if there is coming something big, I should spot it when it is some 10 hexes South of Chandpur.

quiet days, I´m not able to get my aircraft flying. Wonder what´s happening in Burma. The CVEs are away again, looks like Hortlund just wanted to catch my 3 old DDs that I had forgotten about. But there are also fighters and bombers at Mandalay now. He also reconned far into India with Betties, but that´s surely just a failed attempt to make me nervous...

this is a piket ship three hexes South of the coast of India... [8|] I find it REALLY strange to use this kind of picket ships but that´s how it is... What I also find strange (Hortlund would call it gamey - like everything I did in this campaign so far; the only thing of my moves that isn´t gamey is when I lose ships...) is the fact that he sends an armada of MINI TFs to Akyab... . Well if he would send 4-6 medium sized TFs, who cares, but we have spotted some 16 TFs consisting of one, or two ships. If we spotted 16 it means there are most likely more than 2 dozen mini TFs going to Akyab. No Steve, your moves are never gamey... This is just exploiting the game engine! As you can see, no more attacks on ships today, even though we have more than 200 bombers set on naval attack and most of those TFs are in range. And we have 300+ escorts. IMO it´s really BS to see this operation, he knows exactly that my attacks will be completely broken up to ridicoulos numbers with 70 bombers with 2 escorts attacking a single MSW when he always has his full Cap over his base. It´s BS...[:-] Soon I will deliberately look for "Trollelites" that I can exploit to the max in this campaign, knowing to risk the game as my opponent is pretty sensitive, when he thinks that something is gamey (which only can be gamey if your opponent is doing that...).

We also spotted a BB at Akyab, so perhaps my 60 torp bombers with 100 escorts will fly alltogether and at least sink this ship. Most of the ships will just get through in all those mini TFs...

have a look:

At the moment, this game has stopped (better say I stopped it). Perhaps it has ended...

The combat report follows, this is what I wrote Hortlund:

Well, it was like I expected it to be. I just clicked the esc key during the replay and I really have to tell you that I won´t give any orders this turn or to make it more clear, I won´t play that turn at all... I won´t really comment using two dozen+ mini TFs either as you know that this is completely exploiting the game engine, seen in how my strikes have looked like… hmmm, this is not what I think I can accept, nor do I want to do my invasions with 250 mini TFs eiter… if you have a TF somewhere that has to be scattered because KB or an Allied death star shows up, well, but this operation to Akyab…

The engine went completely crazy of course due to the fact that there were dozens of mini TFs...

what a great tactic, a Trollelite that couldn´t be done better...

just count up the TFs that show up in the report - then at least double it and you have perhaps the number of TFs that are in two or three hexes...

RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy

Post by castor troy »

Steve offered me a redo and started a thread on the main forum if it´s okay (in the game) to have two dozen TFs in a base hex with 100 fighters on Cap to lure in two dozen small strikes, some escorted others without escorts, all in all the engine goes nuts...

After having my blood pressure coming down a bit again, I accepted Steve´s offer to go two turns back - the turn BEFORE he splitted his 6 TFs in 28 sub TFs... we are now at the date 8/16/42 again...

the situation is as follows, this is what I wrote in my email:

That´s fair. As I´ve said before, there won´t be any surface TFs anyway due to the Betty danger. If there are bigger TFs I expect the airstrikes looking different though.

Problem is though, that I moved around aircraft the turn before the attacks on Akyab, I guess I´m allowed to do that – and hopefully I will get it done similar (all airbases were full, though it will be hard to have exactly the same bomber/fighter ratio). And what if this time my bombers from Calcutta attack, in the original turns they didn´t because your TFs were most likely too small to launch the bombers before you got to Akyab? As I´ve said, I don´t like it… best would be you would come back in one or two weeks and I won´t attack Akyab for the next 2 weeks??

I have stood down all my front line aircraft, which means the next turn will be different than the original one (regarding orders) and then I will set my bombers to naval attack as soon as you´ve entered Akyab. Only those from Calcutta will stay on naval attack. As my front line bases (Chandpur, Dacca and Imphal) didn´t launch in the original turns against your smaller TFs before you entered Akyab, I think you should have that one turn free before entering Akyab. In the original turns, all my aircraft were on nav attack as soon as I got the first sighting of an enemy ship. As my aircraft are all grounded at the front I don´t expect you to do a 200 bomber attack on one of my airfields this turn!

this also didn´t happen in the original turn, so it was kind of dumb to stand down all my aircraft in India to allow the enemy TFs to move in to Akyab... [8|] well, Hortlund couldn´t know that I stand down all my aircraft when he ended his turn and as those (more of them follow) airfield attacks didn´t happen in the original turn I thought it was a good move from me to stand down my aircraft... thought wrong...

and also Dacca wasn´t bombed in the original turn... [8|] so it seems the given orders are a bit away from the original orders... oh well, it´s completely different know, we ordered massive strikes for tomorrow now also... originally I spotted some 100 fighters at Mandalay, now only 12... originally I spotted 100 fighters at Akyab, now 200! see! There´s only ONE TF at Akyab today (which consist of ONE MSW, the other one sunk) and I get nearly a full 48 plane bomber group to attack. When there were 28 TFs my BIG strikes were made up out of 12 bombers... all bombers turn back... 5 are shot down A2A...

all in all with the "surprise" airfield attacks we lose 20+ aircraft today...

As said yesterday, the "redo" is different and after Steve attacked my airfields yesterday and I spotted far more fighters at Akyab than in the original turn, I gave different orders also. Means this is no try to redo the turn with the same orders, this is something complete different now...

well, I´m glad that Hortlund attacked my airfields last turn and convinced me about giving different orders! The attempt to redo the original turn with the same orders failed obviously as instead of 109 fighters on Cap, this time there are 163!! on Cap... [X(] I spotted them due to my recon and the advantage of seeing the Japanase aircraft transfers. But what if I hadn´t spotted them and would have tried to give the same orders in the original turn? Oh well... I spotted them, wondered about, gave different orders...

Unfortunately Imphal was clouded and launched no aircraft the whole day. But the sweep from Chandpur goes in and we take horrendous losses, which we just can not afford. But we just have to attack! Even though the Hurricane pilots are my most exp. the fighter bombers are shot out of the sky at will. The most depressing is the performance of the Spitfires! I had high hopes for this squadron (it´s the best fighter squadron on the map with 76 exp... well it was). In the end we lose 15 Spits (including 14 pilots), they were able to take down 4 Oscars... [&:]

While we can deal with the Oscars, more or less, it seems impossible to hurt the Zeros. Zero kill rate must be somewhere around 5 or 6:1 against the best I can field. Probably the Oscar sentais already had a couple of their aces killed and are now operating with a good number of replacement pilots (60 exp), while still achieving a kill rate in their favour. But the Zeroes are doing as good in 8/42 as they did in 12/41.

We even were lucky as the first thing I saw when the airbattles started was "Wellington III fails to locate target", which means the bombers from Dacca (5 hexes!!) tried to go in BEFORE the sweep from Chandpur (4 hexes!!). This would have been a complete disaster... So sweeps are not always going in first, not even if the distance to fly for the fighters is shorter than the distance for the bombers.

and then the bombers go in... we take advantage of the fact that flak fire over Akyab was light in the past and send in the bombers at low attack height. The Cap was already disrupted, a lot of Oscars were grounded due to the damage they took from our sweep. We were happy to see that the A2A didn´t last long and soon we saw our bombers going in to drop their loads on Akyab´s airfield where we destroy dozens of IJA fighters on the ground. Would this attack have failed, the whole day would have been a catastrophe. The airbase should have been 100% damaged all the time already, last turn the airfield was still reported 30% damaged. We achieve another 118 runway hits, the level 4 airfield should be near the unoperational status.

The we send the rest of our bombers in, coming from Calcutta. I even used Australian Bostons, we had to send everything we had. Only the Chinese bombers in India weren´t attacking today (and I didn´t use my torpedoe bombers for the airfield attack of course - they´re just to valuable).

I was surprised to still see fighters in the air. Most of the Zeroes seem to fly LRCAP but the Oscars are based at Akyab I think, so at this time the airfield wasn´t closed for launching Cap. But the fighters were completely out of position and disrupted from our attacks already and the bombers manage to avoid them mostly. They achieve a very good hit rate, there were 180 runway hits today. Don´t know how much the troops at Akyab can repair every day, but hopefully this has closed Akyab´s airfield tomorrow.

Image

as you can see, we destroyed more aircraft than we lost today, but the A2A was in favour of the Japanese, which wasn´t really surprising. The performance of my Martlets (stripped a British CV in port) wasn´t as good as I thought, the Spitfires were totally disappointing, the Hurricanes performed as always - they sucked - and the Warhawks are the ones we rely on (they even achieved a kill rate in their favour).

We lost around 60 British pilots (a disaster when looking at a replacement rate of 30/month) and 25 USAAF pilots were lost also, which isn´t that severe. Though we replace those pilots of 60 exp with pilots of 50 exp - at least there are more of those 50 exp pilots we get as replacement than we have aircraft to put them in. What we already knew was obvious today, the Hurricanes can´t take on the Japanese fighters if the enemy really puts up high numbers. But there are just not enough USAAF squadrons in India. We are now thinking about sending two more USAAF fighter groups to India. They have to go by ship, so with the IJN CS, CVEs and subs keeping up their blocade on the map edge shipping lanes to India, we would be in danger to lose those aircraft. The fight in the Pacific can be fought by the Marines, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand fighters also, we don´t need USAAF fighters there. With 100-140 USAAF fighters more in India, we could rely on the British fighters/fighter bombers as a backup.

with the loss of nearly 150 fighters, the threat of the Japanese air defense was AT LEAST halfed. I doubt that there are more than 300 fighters in Burma and they suffer in numbers over Akyab when having to fly LRCAP. There are only a couple of dozen fighters spotted at Akyab, so the majority has to come in on LRCAP. So I think the IJN/IJA fighter numbers over Akyab will be somewhere around 50 tomorrow. Which would be only one third of today. This could open the way for our bombers on naval attack. Perhaps it wasn´t bad to have Imphal clouded today, so those squadrons there haven´t suffered. Imphal has 200 aircraft ready to go tomorrow. The depleted fighter bomber squadrons were taken back to fill up their losses, we flew in 60 Hurricanes for escort duty tomorrow. The Warhawks will also fly escort tomorrow.

Tomorrow´s strikes: from Chandpur (torp bombers with Hurricanes and Warhawks as escorts), from Dacca (Wellingtons with Hurricanes and Warhawks as escorts), from Calcutta (unescorted Wellingtons, IL-4c, Bostons and the two dozen remaining Marauders that have VERY low morale), from Imphal (Warhawks and Hurricanes on sweep, 48 SB2c with Hurricanes as escort). All bombers are set on nav attack tomorrow!

Not just the British pilot pool suffered today (down to 153!!) of course also the pools for HurricaneIIb and IIc are empty, as is the Spitfire pool! This, with not all losses replaced and I guess we lose some 30-40 Hurricanes more tomorrow.

another big strike, instead of 12 small strikes. The Japanese fighters once again have severe problems taking down the Allied bombers. I agree with Hortlund that this is a problem of the mod, though he seems not to agree with me that it´s also a problem that the Zeroes take down 50 of my most exp pilots in the best fighters I can field for a loss of 4 or 5 Zeroes. I´ve got the feeling he wants to see losses on my side like they would be in stock but he can accept the changes of the mod if those are in his favour.

and that´s it! All in all, in the last two days we took severe losses within our fighter squadrons, the British pilot pool lost around 80-90 pilots, Hurricane pools are empty. P-40 pool is down to 20, losses in USAAF pilots are not as a problem like the losses of British pilots. We destroyed a lot of Japanese fighters also, but mostly IJA Oscars. The Zeroes with their pilots in the 80s are performing, comparable to 80 exp. Corsairs vs 70 exp Zeroes in stock. Unbelievable high kill rates which my forces just can´t sustain. I can´t afford losing 8-10 of my fighters for the loss of 1 Zero.

the last two turns saw us losing 241 aircraft vs. 220 Japanese aircraft lost! To be more precise, we lost:

115 Hurricane IIb
67 P-40 Warhawk
8 Hurricane IIc
8 Wellington III
15 Spitfire Vb
18 Marlet II
and a couple of other aircraft

the Japanese lost:

169 Oscar Ic (49 on the ground)
33 A6M-3 Zero (21 on the ground)
13 A6M-2 Zero
and 5 other aircraft

Image

with the damage done to the enemy´s shipping this looks like it was a severe punch on the first looks. But as I´ve mentioned, the losses of British pilots are really severe and it will take one month to fill out and repair the squadrons and another 3 months to bring those 50 exp pilots back to 70 exp like those pilots that were lost in the last two days. With the numbers of ships (especially APs) I expect massive reinforcements of Akyab, for sure more AA. Our troops are already 70 miles away from Akyab and will enter the enemy base within a month. I´m not overcomitted here, so if he wants to defend this base, he will be able to do that, but he can NOT defend all other base with a couple of divisions then and a well planned massive invasion of one of the bases on Sumatra could cause him real problems. What we have to do is to bring more USAAF fighters to India. I could also bring in Marine fighter squadrons but I always found it strange to see Corsairs operating out of India. There are problems though. We have to send those USAAF fighters to India by ship through sub, CS, CVE infested waters on the map edge to India AND the P-40 replacement rate is 50, so it takes one and a half months to upgrade a 72 aircraft FG. This, if we take no losses to the existing squadrons, which won´t be possible.

What´s also interesting is a discussion Steve and I have at the moment as he thinks that Nikmod made the Japanese a piece of crap. I have the same mod going in my game against Swift and I can say from both sides, the Japanese are absolutely not a piece of crap in this mod. I even expect them to be stronger from 43 on compared to stock. As our battles so far showed, even 29 Betties, escorted by 50 Zeroes are able to score a couple of hits within your CV TFs, so the Uber cap is nearly solved. Of course this brings up the problems for the Japanese also, when the Japanese player sees nearly undestructable Allied bombers. But to overcompensate this, there is the Japanese super flak now, which can make 200 Allied bombers inoperational after one attack from an alt of 11-16.000 ft. Attacks from the standart attack alt in most other versions of WITP are only possible if there are no more than 1 or 2 IJA baseforces at a base.

One thing Steve mentioned was the Japanese aircraft industry, that was cut down. Yes, in the beginning you have far less aircraft in production than in stock. But it´s EASILY possible to ramp up production. You can ramp it up at will, there´s always enough supply lying around. It just takes a couple of months if you increase your output. I did that in my game against Swift and so I checked Hortlund´s output also. Guess what! I don´t know why he´s arguing about a crippled Japanese aircraft industry, he´s producing around 200 Oscars and 260 Zeroes at the moment!!! [X(] At this date, I didn´t even produce such numbers in stock - there´s no need for such a high production "capacity" anyway. In my game against Swift I ramped up production also, no question, but I´m not the one who´s saying that this isn´t possible.

So in fact, the losses my opponent took over Akyab are replaced easily, when we´re talking about the airframes. And I guess there are still more than 1000 pilots in the Japanese pool. This in a mod that completely crippled the Japanese! [:D]

IJN CL Natori was sunk by Allied land based 2E bombers based in India!

Natori (CL-8)
Imperial Japanese Navy Cruiser of World War Two

With three widely-spaced straight funnels and seven single turrets scattered around her deck, Natori looked, and was, out-of-date by World War Two. But she saw plenty of action, until a US submarine sank her in late 1944.

Natori was the fourth in the Nagara-class of light cruisers, which were intended for use as the flagship of a destroyer flotilla.

Natori was completed in 1922. Soon after commissioning, Natori was assigned to patrols off the China coast. From 1938, it was based in Taiwan, and helped cover the landings of Japanese troops in southern China.

On 26 November 1941, Natori became flagship of Rear Admiral Kenzaburo Hara's DesRon 5. At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Natori was escorting six troop transports to northern Luzon. The landing force was attacked by three USAAF B-17s on 10 December 1941, which slightly damaged Natori and its escorting destroyer Harukaze with near misses.

Natori was later assigned to cover the invasion of the Dutch East Indies, and participated in the Battle of Sunda Strait in February 1942. Natori and other Japanese ships deployed around the landing areas. The USS Houston (CA-30) and the Australian light cruiser HMAS Perth attacked Japanese troop transports. At 2300, Natori and her destroyers arrived. Natori, with Hatsuyuki and Shirayuki, then opened fire and rapidly closed the range. At 2308, the Allied cruisers turned NE and Natori and her destroyers headed SE in three columns.

On 10 March 1942, Natori was assigned to CruDiv 16 with the light cruiser Nagara. After the occupation of Java, Natori participated in the Battle of Christmas Island.

In April, Natori was assigned to patrols of the Java Sea, which continued into June. After a refit back at Maizuru, Natori returned to the Java Sea and Timor Sea until December, with occasional calls at Mergui in Burma, Penang, Singapore and Davao.

In December 1942, Natori delivered a Special Naval Landing Force to Hollandia, New Guinea.

On 9 January 1943, southeast of Ambon, Natori was sighted by USS Tautog (SS-199). The Tautog fired two torpedoes which hit the Natori in the stern. It broke off and carried away her rudder. In the next few minutes, as Natori got underway at reduced speed, Tautog fired two more torpedoes, but they either missed or were duds and Natori escaped without further damage.

On 21 January 1943, while at Ambon, Natori was damaged by a near-miss from a B-24. The bomb opened plates and flooded a boiler room. Natori departed for repairs at Seletar Naval Base, Singapore. Repairs were not completed until 24 May 1943, but then Natori was sent back to Japan for further repairs and modernization.

At Maizuru, two large guns were removed as were her catapult and derrick, and more anti-aircraft guns were installed. This brought Natori's 25 mm AA suite to fourteen barrels. Better air-search radar was fitted and hydrophones were installed at her bow. Repairs and modernization were completed on 1 April 1944, and Natori was assigned as the flagship of the Central Pacific Fleet's DesRon 3.

In June 1944, Natori ferried Japanese Army troops to Mindanao and Palau. Natori remained at Davao in late June through August as a guard ship.

On 18 August 1944, 200 nautical miles east of Samar, Natori was spotted by USS Hardhead (SS-365). USS Hardhead identified the target as a battleship and closed for a surface attack. One Mark 23 Torpedo fired at 2,800 yards (2,600 m) hit the Natori portside in a boiler room. She stopped dead in the water and was hit starboard amidships with another from the second salvo. At 0704, Natori sank, taking 330 crewmen including Captain Kubota with her. The destroyers Uranami and Kiyoshimo rescued 194 survivors, and the USS Stingray (SS-186) recovered four more survivors in a rubber raft. On 12 September 1944, almost a month after her sinking, USS Marshall (DD-676) captured a lifeboat with another 44 survivors of the Natori aboard.

Natori was removed from the Navy List on 10 October 1944.

after two weeks of not launching (they were set to nav attack all the time), today the B-17 launched for a devastating strike again. The fighters were absolutely unable to inflict real damage - once again. Hortlund asked for a house rule about min alt for 4Es and I had that already in mind. My answer to his request:

As soon as I get my B-24s I will have a min alt for all 4Es on nav attack of 10.000 which means starting in 10/42. If that´s okay for you. Like I said, at the moment I have those B-17s that you see at Thursday Island with reduced bomb load but a very very high exp after 9 months of war. And that´s it, no more 4Es on the whole map. They are a pain in the ass for you there but I don´t get why you park your cruisers for two weeks there, just waiting to get bombed. If I put my cruisers for two weeks 8 hexes away from 90 Betties would you feel for me? And 40 Allied fighters wouldn´t stop 90 Betties either (all Betties with the looong discussed torpedo availability). Kitakami sunk but your heavy cruiser was 500lb bomb prove anyway (which he shouldn’t be). Those bombers had two weeks such a low morale (and most of them were damaged) that they never launched, today was their first attack again, even though they were set to nav attack all the time, so IMO you had plenty of time to place your ships elsewhere, no?

But it´s the old story, you should have shot down more bombers, not a single one was lost A2A. Don´t want to see the numbers of stock, but surely a number around 10 would have been better. Hopefully this will change when you get your next generation fighters
.

while Kitakami was hit by a couple of 1000lb bombs and sunk in the morning already, Tone came away as the heavy cruiser was hit by 500lb bombs, which only stripped of one turret of the main armament and a couple of 25mm guns. We spotted an AP/AK TF 8 hexes East of Darwin and my 200 B-25 there took off but all failed to locate the TF. This TF is surely going to Thursday Island also. I will fly my 200 B-25 to Cooktown to replace my B-17 there and then I will try to launch a massive 2E bomber attack against this incoming convoy.

Our raider Tf wasn´t spotted and retired to Chandpur under a Cap umbrella of around 100 Allied fighters.

last attack and again I´m happy with the damage done. Some ships sank right after this attack. We lost one bomber today. Hortlund will feel happy with his ship losses and once again I´m happy with the ships lost too![;)]

Was thinking the Spitfires would be a little better, guess not. The Hurricanes are pretty much a death trap.

As regards your B-17s having success. There was a reason fleets didn't base within LBA range.

my B-17s are deadly to everything that isn´t armored. Most of them are now 80+. In Nikmod they only carry 6 bombs, same bomb load as a B-25. Their biggest advantage is that they are so tough and still I have lost more than I get as replacement (while I think I don´t use them too much) and the 116 aircraft I would need to fill out both BG is something I have yet to reach. I think Hortlund is frustrated about them because he can´t stop them but they are for sure not as deadly as his Betties are and while he has 500 of them, I don´t even have 120 4Es... I don´t get why he stays so long with his cruisers at Thursday. If he wants to guard a convoy, okay, but then move in, unload, move out - this doesn´t take two weeks. Something to also point out is the fact that I don´t use the LB-30 at all! I think they were mostly used as transports so I don´t use the 50+ I have in the pool, but Steve seems pretty much pissed off anyway.

if he wants I will put them at 10.000 ft nav attack from tomorrow on...

The Spitfires were really disappointing, as said, those were my best fighter pilots on the map. Pretty much everything (except the Wellington III) the British can put into the air isn´t worth a lot. With Zeroes, Hitler would have conquered Britain! [;)]
