Opponent(s) Wanted

Post by learnerever »

First PBEM game . Have played about half the scenarios
plus a few d/l:ed ones , multiple battles vs. computer :D .

got version 7.1 , e-mail addy : learnerever@yahoo.com

some prefs :

4000-6000 battle points ,

True troop off/rarity on (more balanced , right?)
C&C off , others on (if charsteristics and
historic ratings off , troop quality 70) , limited ammo
instead of reduced.

0-2 air sections , 15%-20% of battle points artillery max. ,
none or very few mines (say 50-100 pts. worth)

these are just preferences , can play with other settings
if found reasonable enough :)

Learnerever. Right now a lot of us are fighting in 3 or 4 battles at once! But just sit tight and I'm sure someone will be hooking up with you to brawl soon. ;)
If your thread gets bumped down the line without any responses...just throw in another response on it, so it doesn't get lost way down the line. Things that get bumped off the main page sometimes never get seen again...it's like our version of the Bermuda Triangle. :D
In the meantime...read up on some of the other on-going battles if you haven't already. They'll help you get a idea of the mentality of some of the people you'll be playing against soon. Which should scare the living Hell out of you. :p

ps....Goblin, get this guy to your "screen names" thread, I'd like to see the story behind this one! :D

Orzel , the battle description threads are just great .
I been reading them for a while already , and
stuff like that fight between the molotov-drinking
russian commander ( lol ) and Oberst Thielemann
(Winter Rage) is just awesome . Got lost in thought
trying to imagine how the scene would have looked
like every now and then :) . You a writer or something ?

I think I'll get 1 or 2 games going soon enough ,
can't wait , really :)

You can learn a lot...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

from the threads we post here...besides the fact that we tend to have fun in the various styles we use to describe a given battle. :)
You've probably already picked up by reading some of the posts that some people like airdropping units behind enemy lines...or using lots of cheap units to simply overwhelm anothers defenses. Each player has a favorite tatic or style...and knowng what that is could come in handy down the road.;)
As for the Winter Rage thread...that was just something I did on the spur of the moment. I've seen a couple previous threads that took the same approach...so I thought..."why not see if I can take it a bit further and describe it as if it were a diary entry from turn to turn?" At first I thought the other members would say "how cheesey!" but I've actually had some people tell me they like it. And naturally, that's more than enough to keep me doing it. :D
Of course it's not as funny as some of the other threads that you'll see from the likes of Goblin, Hellcat, Jess and Belsarius (those just kill me at times)...but I think it has found a place.
Anyway, welcome to the forum once more...and good luck with your battles. I imagine one day we shall lock horns ourselves.
:)

ps...not a writer...just too much imagination mixing with an old English studies major from the college days. :D

learnerever,

You should have True Troop ON/Rarity OFF if you want to turn something off. True Troop adjusts the cost of units based on experience, so crack troops cost more then green ones. Good for play balance.

Welcome! Get your butt over to my 'Screen Names' thread in the Hall of Fame, so Orzel doesn't have a stroke!:D ;)

Post by Fallschirmjager »

Hey there Im willing to play.

Whenever im on feel free to msg me and we will set up the details of a game.

The only thing I dont like is limits on air sections and artillery

The game is well balenced if they want to spend all there points in a single catagory let them.

FJ,

That depends on battle size! If you are playing 1000 points, and he spends 50% on arty, you've got him. If you are playing 10000 points, and he spends 50% on arty, he's got you. I usually play with an agreement on arty. Alot more fun than counting 155mm Battalions is.

Goblin- A Goblin likes arty, but...

I disagree

Play 10000 points.

Let my opponent spend 5000 on artillery and ATG's

Ill chew them alive with infantry.

I haven't found a way to kill OB arty with infantry.... He could buy all Off-Board stuff, and 5000 points of holding troops, hit you until you were dust, then move in to clean up the mess. It really is no fun sitting under a twenty minute barrage, then getting to your turn, and you can move three units. Try to rally everyone for rest of turn, do it again next turn. No fun, and not realistic.

Goblin- A Goblin agrees to disagree;)

PS-the limits usually apply to mortars, howitzers, etc. Not to ATG's, AA guns, Infantry guns, or others on the 'Artillery' list. Just the stuff that appears on the Arty Plotting table.

yea I was going to ask about that .
Started 2 games already and counted
AT , AA , FO's in it too ( well roughly , but
anyways ) just to be on the safe side :)

I'll only tell you of the games , however ,
if me troops manage to kill an enemy unit or
something :P

and "learner" , well , something we all do I
hope , typed in a manner as to not make
it probable someone has taken it already
when I register it :P

Have to Agree with Goblin...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Hellcat and I limited our arty to 15-20% of our total points tops, just to keep it realistic and I think it works well.
If someone could buy 5k in OB arty, I would imagine that that would unbalance the game so badly I can't see how it would be fun? Especially if you were to purchase arty that was 122mm or greater! There would be nothing left to play with after four turns.
So I'm a believer in limits on arty and air sections....if only to keep the game balanced and enjoyable.
Again that is just an opinion, but one based off of experience while designing my own scenarios.:)

Orzel - An Orzel agrees with Goblin...slaughter is no challenge. ;)

I hate to keep pressing the point but I still disagree. The soviets and Americans deployed Artillery DIVISIONS. They would deploy this in a very small area where an attack was to be delievered and barrages could last hours. This doesnt even cover artillery attached to a infantry or armor divison.

And just think if this were a WW1 game where they would pummel the trenchs for 1-2 WEEKS. Almost non-stop.

There is no way id ever spend 40% of my points on Artillery but If my opponent did I wouldnt much care.

FJ,

I know you are right, but this game deals with only a small part of a larger front. You are a Battalion (roughly) commander, and the arty assigned to you is part of that division of arty, representing what is available in your sector. Perhaps most of the other guns are firing north and south of your map? I have played with opponents who went overboard with the arty, and it was absolutely no fun at all. An artillery division supporting one tiny sector of line?

Goblin- A Goblin says we are way off thread here
