RE: 1/18/1942 Canton threat?

Post by Yava »

Gents,
I was thinking about one issue concerning Canton Island.
This small TF and the pesky sub with its even more pesky plane are making me feel insecure about the place... however this can be a convoy that is to
a) Transport eng squads to Baker.
b) A small trap... Maybe Dixie wants me to play... with carriers that is...
c) A landing party moving towards Canton...

Situation

So, what do you think?

i would say invasion canton is good to secure because it extends your supply lines for oz.

You make me proud. [:D]

If you have no idea where his CV's are, then you have to assume they are right behind every enemy TF you spot. [:-] [;)] I agree that capturing Canton Island is the most likely option, but there's not a lot you can do without tremendous risk. [8|]

It looks like the siege of Singapore is about to start. How do things look for you there? Supply levels, fort levels, and AV levels? You can only hope your troops there are half as effective as your Hong Kong defenders have been. Dixie is really beating his head against the wall there! [;)] Even when you know the place will fall soon, it's very satisfying to sink just one more ship, or see him lose another 1000 troops in a defeated attack. [8D]

Nice work with the Shoho!

When it comes to Dixie's CVs I assume that he is keeping them near Port Moresby just in case I wanted to interfere with his landings in the place... that would be a good explenation for the small number of planes stationed in Rabaul. However he might have sent some CVLs to Kwajalein or somewhere closer.

Not much done in the place since the beginning of the game. I'll make a seperate post concerning Singapore in the next update. [:)]

[:D] Thanks... I hope it's going to sink finally... Critical damage caused by the first bomb and the second made his ammo storage blow... later I have seen the agony of the floating torch with high crew casualties and many gun mounts destroyed....

Junk is in the dry docks of WC... same with CLs which are either there or OZ along with CAs and few DDs... so the means of stopping the possible invasion are a bit small and compromise of the mentioned earlier forces... we shall see what's going to happen in the upcoming turns... [:)]

Gents,
a relatively quiet day with a nice success for our submarine crews... old S-boats managed to kick the hell out of some Jap transports... [:D] around Celebes... a nice end of the patrol for 3 of them, Soerabaja is the target for them... replenishment is a must for them...

The naval search function is still a "WTF" to me. [:D] I have yet to figure out the "magic" combination of PBYs and/or LBs on naval search to do an effective job. Time and time again, Japanese TF have appeared where I thought they should have been seen earlier by my search planes. Go figure. [:(]

Gents,
the situation for today is as follows:
China
Our forces got kicked out of Tatung by the enemy. Not a surprise.

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 52204 troops, 249 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1304

Defending force 25749 troops, 126 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 702

Japanese max assault: 1331 - adjusted assault: 1756

Allied max defense: 646 - adjusted defense: 70

Japanese assault odds: 25 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
944 casualties reported
Guns lost 9

Allied ground losses:
695 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Our forces in Canton suffered one of the most heavy bombardments since they entered the city, heavy casualties were reported, these were mainly caused by Jap ship artillery.

Burma/India
We have planned a small air ride agains Rangoon AF. We are to sweep the place with our fighters from Akyab and later our B-17s and a few RAF bombers are going to bomb the place.
From other news in the region our surrounded BF SE of Rangoon got annihilated by enemy paratroopers.

DEI
Jap 48th Division took Samarinda today
Ground combat at Samarinda

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 19487 troops, 93 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 427

Defending force 2330 troops, 28 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 20

Japanese max assault: 336 - adjusted assault: 304

Allied max defense: 15 - adjusted defense: 9

Japanese assault odds: 33 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Samarinda base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
41 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
4528 casualties reported
Guns lost 38

...and KXI put two cigars into AP Neikai Maru sinking it NE of Palembang.
We aslo managed to damage two Betty bombers over Koepang.

OZ
Odd... Jap Carrier TF dissapeared... I assume that Japs sailed back N.

Central Pacific
Contact with the enemy TF from Baker has not been re-established. However the darn sub with that pesky plane is still spying the place. ASW action will comence.

That would be all.[:)]

Hi Yava.  Are you using the Dutch subs O19 and O20 on minelaying duty, or just regular sub patrols?

RE: 1/22/1942 Bandits over Mandalay...

Post by Yava »

Gents,
the main area of operations has moved to Malaya, Burma and China leaving DEI and PI quiet for now. So let me start this short report.

Malaya
The enemy after cutting Singapore off from the rest of our forces that are currently present in Malacca and Mersing seems to be concentrating on weakening our defenses in the mentioned bases rather than on moving to Singapore itself. Major air strike hit Malacca today and Dixie tried to put his flag over Mersing... but failed [;)] However it is just a matter of days for the place to fall...

Ground combat at Mersing

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 20556 troops, 74 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 432

Defending force 3276 troops, 23 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 85

Japanese max assault: 395 - adjusted assault: 184

Allied max defense: 77 - adjusted defense: 25

Japanese assault odds: 7 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
194 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Allied ground losses:
197 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Burma/India
Here the main area of operations is Mandalay or at least the sky above it.... for the second day now Jap Zeroes swept over the place this time shooting down 4 AVG planes... we had to move the 1st squadron back to the place today... we shall see the results of this action soon enough.

Day Air attack on Mandalay , at 33,29

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 25

Allied aircraft
P-40B Tomahawk x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40B Tomahawk: 4 destroyed, 4 damaged[:-]

China
Here Dixie is still struggling to kick our forces out of Canton. A small Bombardment TF compromising of CL Natori and 6DD's bombed our positions during the night. Later that day Japs launched an air strike aimed at our lines in the place and this was followed by an bombardment attack.
All over the country Dixie is launching air strikes at our forces. And all we can do is almost nothing about it. We launched two small strikes of IL-4's but enemy loses were minimal.
And here's an update for the HK situation fans.

Hey Yava, don't forget that only the 1st Squadron of the AVG is "exempt" from the Zero Bonus in CHS.  2nd and 3rd Squadrons will be blasted as easily as any run of the mill P40E group while the Zero Bonus is still in effect.  This is one disadvantage of breaking all of the aircraft groups down into squadrons for CHS.  A small price to pay for this fantastic mod.  [8D]

Hi Mike,
Yup, the 1st AVG has id not affected by teh Zero bonus. I had them in Akyab for the last two days performing sweeps over Rangoon, but Dixie didn't want to play so I have transfered them back to Mandalay for some shooting. We shall see how it's going to work this time. [;)]

Canton, Palmyra and Christmas Islands are being slowly turned into defensive positions... 2nd USMC Div is planned for Canton... or maybe I shall do the same with the 24th Div from PH? I don't know yet... RCTs shall be sent to Palmyra and Christmas Islands... I am not very keen on sending troops to Fiji... too far away for now... less bases but with better defenses is what I need.

Canton Island is nice to have, but undefensable. If he wants it, he brings KB and Co. and he takes it regardless if you have 2 divisions there. You have no close by bases to use LBA to help and only CVs can do so. Which is why I don't like sending a lot there early in the war.

Go for Pago Pago to Suva area. Multiple bases that you can base LBA from and they are interlocking to help with your defense. If you lose this area, then your LOC to Nz/Oz become very long and difficult to maintain.

Just my $.02 [:D]
