Sp guns vs. tanks

Besides the relevant combat values of attack and armor....does one fare better than the other in this game?

Its my understanding that the game doesn't distinguish between infantry support weapons and tanks, which is unfortunate. SP guns weren't intended to fight tanks.

I have to disagree with you on that one, Ed. Except for those armed with lower velocity howitzers, most were armed with high-velocity tank-killing guns. Just seems they'd have some deficit in the game. Ah, well...I still like this game above most others.

Also, the game does make adjustments for at least the lightly armored Axis tank destroyers, such as the Nashorn and others. They fight with only half strength and half losses on the attack, due to their light armor. They were designed as defensive weapons more so than attacking ones. I don't believe any Soviet ones were affected by this change, as they used even the open topped Su76 in the front lines to support infantry attacks.

Well, something like a Sherman 105 (take a 105mm artillery piece and put it on a Sherman chassis) was not designed for tank combat, but with HEAT ammo it could threaten a tank. Same for some of the others like the SU series (some SUs are AT, others are assault guns, I can't keep them straight). Something like the Stug-IIIg (75mm) blurs the lines, with AP ammo it turned out to be decent at killing tanks even though its supposed to be an assault gun. Assault guns had large caliber cannons but were also low velocity, so they made up for it with special AT ammo. I understand the SU152 was a large enough caliber weapon that it could threaten a tank, despite its low velocity. Did the Soviets have much special AP ammo like HEAT for its assault guns? I can't remember.
