(Note: now that 1.71 is here, I'm gonna start over with perhaps something different.)
We finished 91-63 in 1947, two games behind the Giants. We now set our sights higher.
In the amateur draft, we selected the following players:
1. P Ned Garver
2. C Ed Fitzgerald
3. P Howie Judson
4. P Billy Pierce
5. P Mickey McDermott
Judson and Garver made it to the opening day major league roster. Before opening day, we traded OF Dixie Walker to the Phillies in exchange for a pitching prospect named Curt Simmons.
The Dodgers have strengthened their bullpen, and are ready to make another run for the pennant.
BTW, the Giants have a new manager this year. His name: Leo Durocher.

Trade news: after the game, we made a deal with the Indians, exchanging catchers. We get 27-year-old Roy Campanella. To Cleveland goes 25-year-old Bruce Edwards. This adds another power hitter to our lineup.
We made another move which surprised some people. 32-year-old Joe Hatten, who won 24 games for us last year and was the NL Cy Young Award winner, was sent to the Red Sox. We got 22-year-old Carl Erskine, a right-hander with much potential. Erskine went to AAA, and we called up LHP Billy Pierce.
The reasoning was simple: Hatten is showing signs of age, and has declined in skill. So, better to part with him while he still has market value.

RE: The 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers
KG Commentary: apart from the social changes wrought by the introduction of black players to the majors, there's an obvious business angle. Robinson and Campanella are great players, and they will contribute to the team's success. This point seems to be lost on the other teams' owners.
One must remember that I had a black pitcher (Dan Bankhead) on the AAA roster in '47. He didn't pan out, so I (quietly) released him. My predecessor, Branch Rickey, originally signed Robinson, and he knew what the score was. So do I. My job isn't to be a crusader. My job is to win pennants, and get the best players I can find, regardless of race, creed or color.
Hell, I fought against the Japanese in the last war, but if a good Japanese player was available, I'd sign him.
