What happens to Admirals when TFs seperate due to damage?

Post by HansBolter »

I had a small surface TF, early in the game with 4 CAs and 2 DDs and Willis Lee in command that had a night battle at Lunga.

After the battle the TF seperated into three different TFs some with damaged ships and some with healthy ones, none of which had Lee in command.

At first I was worried that the flagship might be in trouble of sinking and I would lose Lee very early in the campaign so I went searching to find which TF the flagship ended up in, but Lee seems to have disappeared altogether.

He is reported swimming ashore, running over for duty in the glorious Imperial Japanese Navy... [:D] How much do you pay to get him back? [8D]

I noticed thsi once before in a solitaire game and the missing admiral showed up in the available leaders pool a few weeks later......guess it took that long for them to swim back to port.

Maybe he was relieved of command and is facing a Naval Board?  [:D]

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

Hey, he sunk a fat AP loaded with troops and trashed an MSW so badly it won't make it back to port and THEN he crossed the T on the Jap destroyer force and promptly presented his cruisers broadsides to a LL attack althewhile sinking a destroyer and trashing two others. He paid for it with 3 damaged CAs (one heavily) and a destroyer that will likely have to be scuttled.

In case you guys haven't noticed yet I am a lot more like Halsey than Ghormely! I'll go out and fight with whatever I can scrape together.

Please keep true. My due does not exceed ONE CRIPPLED DD, at port in no sinking condition (<60damage). And there was not a single japanese heavy cruiser at this party... My force consisted of just 4 DD and 1 CL.
But I want to agree your style is really Halsey-alike! Its a delight to have this great game with you! [:)]

I assume your CAs were hit w/LL torpedoes, resulting in heavy damage; so much for increasing the lethality of these weapons in UV.

Lee may have been transported by seaplane back into your naval officer pool; why don't you check there.

I can vouch for Halsey-like aggression as he has put together what he can and hit me with it early and hard.

Hmmm....I could have sworn I sunk at least one of those destroyers.......chalk it up to senility on my part.

I'm not yet convinced they are doing sufficient damge with each hit. At the risk of giving too much free intel to my opponent, I did state that three were hit and only one was damaged heavily (that one took two torps while the other two only took one). It's the desrtoyer that took a LL that is at risk of not making it bcak to Noumea.

I just finished reading the part of Frank's Guadalcanal that covered the Battle of Tassafaronga where a U.S. cruiser force took a severe drubbing form a Jap destroyer force (very much like the battle we just had) and I am not sure my curisers are as heavily damaged as the historical battle reflects.

Well, UV is a recreation of war in the PTO and not a battle simulator like CaW. A different dice roll may have sunk your CAs, and nothing sink ships like torpedoes.

Then there's that disclaimer for many Inet capable games that goes something like "on-line play may provide a different gaming experience," or words to that effect.

You're absolutely right. The seemingly mild damage could just be the result of bad randomized results.

I certainly am not going to go back and refight it to see if he can get better die rolls! [:D]

I checked last night and there is no sign of Lee.

I suspect he may reappear in the available leaders interface once all the ships get back to port.

It seems that once the originbal TF breaks up the commanding Admiral simply becomes a passenger

Did you make any recent TFs; the AI will auto-assign an aggressive surface commander to a transport convoy!

Playing the IJN, I have a hard time finding cautious officers for my transports.

In any case, where ever Lee is, just as long as he doesn't drown; Lee and Spruance are your best surface fleet commanders.

I learned the hard way to make sure my best surface commanders weren't being asigned to transport TFs so I usually check, biut I didn't think to check that last night.

As it is still early and I don't need Kinkaid for a carrier TF, I assigned him to command the heavily pared down TF that already made it back to port...he is actually better than Scott.

I usally assign Mitscher and Spruance to command my carriers early on and use Lee, Kinkaid and Scott for surface TFs.
