RE: Ponape conquered!

Post by Fishbed »

I would not worry that much about Troll getting back to Ponape. Sure, fortify the place. But if he cared about not losing it, he would have started to Tokyo Xpress it quite some time ago...
Well personally I think he should have cared a little more about it...

Ponape Counter-Invaded!!!

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/08/42

Wow guys..the Pacific seems to be a thrilling move screen in these days!!!
The KB has escorted till the very gates of Ponape a HUGE counter-invasion TF!!!...my subs didn't manage to succesfully attack the invaders, however they identified a SCTF, the KB TF and a Immense Transport Fleet...
There's no way those marines at Ponape can hold. The base is held by a bunch of raiders, in a terrible shape and with very few supplies, with only light weapons...they have 3 155mm guns, few AA guns and nothing more...
We're gonna lose the base again...
However this is the attrition i was looking for!!
We couldn't bring enough supplies there due to the damage of the air strip and we didn't have the time to reinforce the base as we wanted to...seems we should do all the way back again...i'm just depressed to lose those 2 raider Bns...they would have been usefull in the future...[:(]

In China we managed to get 2 units at Chungking...maybe, maybe...the struggle will go on!

Ponape counter-invaded!!

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

ORIGINAL: Fishbed

Gutsy? Yeah at last! Ho my, you goddam Italian girl, that is what you should have done in ages! And you want a chocolate medal for that beautiful action, Mr. Obvious? Go back to work NOW! There's still a dozen islands between Ponape and Kyushu just waiting for your embrace! [:D]

You're Italian. I assume you only understand tough love. [:'(]

LOL...[:D]

I've learnt it the hard way Fishbed!!
However your predictions were wrong...Troll is getting back to Ponape in force[;)]...seems that we will have to re-invade it back again in the nearby future[X(]

Ho then maybe you stumbled upon his own reinforcement plan... Too bad you can't turn that into a new guadalcanal yet!

More LCU, that's more people to bomb into oblivion with your huge B-24 ^^
Aren't sending reinforcements by Dakota around the clock? That wasn't enough?

The Marines HOLD!!!

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

The 9th and the 10th of June could become two decisive days in the war.
On the night between 8th and 9th, a strong surface combat TF sweep the waters of Ponape. 2 American DDs at Eniwetok decided to react ([&:][&:]) and move at full speed towards Ponape...needless to say that, despite the jap force has hit a jap mine[:D], my DDs were easily overrruned by the experienced japanese crews.
Then the Japs bombarded the shores at Ponape. My marines were struggling on the beaches, using as trenches the dead bodies of the Ponape Garrison crews....
My Brave Subs attacked the incomig invasion fleet, scoring only 1 hit...but that was good anyway.
Then the storm arrived.
The 8th Marine CD (well, actually a fragment of it) unit used every single bullet to throw against the landing japaneses.
Enemy's losses were brutal. In two landing waves the Japs, under an heavy fire, lost nearly 1000 men, between deads and woundeds.
Then the day arrived.
The KB was stationing 3 hexes NW of Ponape, flying LRCap over the base. I've ordered to my P-38Fs to LRCAP over there too and to my B-17s and Dakotas to bring supplies to Ponape for the uncoming battle.
Many strikes against my small garrison of braves arrived from Truk and from the KB. Our P-38s managed to shoot down 5 zeros, losing 3 air frames. Not bad.
The Dakotas losses were higher...8 planes intercepted and shot down.
5 B-17s were lost due to incidents on the badly damaged Ponape landing strip.
The Japanese invasion force was composed by 1 strong SNLF unit and by a Naval Garrison unit.
...they front attacked...and got badly repulsed by not more than 30 marine squads, supported by 3 155mm guns.[&o][&o][&o]

Then the 10th....
our B-17s were ordered to attack the japs stuck on the shores of Ponape. High Altitude ordered, and heavy escort provided.
The KB moved closer and the CAP over Ponape was strong.
in 2 fierce air battles our P-40s managed to exchange blows with the zeros, ending the day with a rate close to 1-1!!!![8D]
His subs are trying to load the bastards that are stuck on the beach. 2 of his subs (RO-64 and I-164) are badly hit by my conrados.
His betties came again over Ponape and this time my P-38s weren't there...so our Marines got hit quite badly!
However none of the sides had the strong to attack today...the japs are moving their damaged fleet back to Truk, covered by the KB....
Tomorrow more Marines will be brought with the dakotas at Ponape...
Attrition. That's the word!!!

And now China....

A huge Armoured Corp managed to push forward, closing the western door to Chungking, while he keeps on sending his Paras on suicide attacks against the chinese capital...
Now the situation is problematic. However already 4 units managed to get safely to Chungking...which is already a good result. I hope i can get 5/10 more units there before the pocket is closed again

Do you have any clue about how tough is the CAP over KB btw?

After looking over this map, he can only bring supplies north along the road running from Canton towards Tuyun. I don’t care what it takes, cut that road with whatever you have. One or two attacks with no supply route and his units will be running on empty.

Image

If anything it’ll force him to pause for a turn or two. That might just buy enough time to get into Chungking with most of your forces. And if he’s been careless and left tiny road garrisons, he’ll have to pause for quite a while so a larger unit can run south to evict you.

Also I’d be careful at Eniwetok, I suspect the nasty surprise he was talking about was going to be a large scale landing there. Ponape may just be a sideshow compared to what he has planned for Eniwetok.

Having similar thoughts here. You might have messed up his timetable a bit, but be wary of weakening Eniwetok when strengthening Ponape. I notice you have units on Bikini. The sooner you can place dive bombers there when needed, the better.

Jim, in China i cannot do what you suggested. At Nanning i only have the static unit...:-(
But there's more...he's using his paras to prevent me from moving to Chungking...every turn he sends 20 men on suicide para drop...this prevents my units from moving to Chungking....because the movement phase is exactly the same as the attack one, but before the air trasport phase...so the hex of Chungking, when the AI calculates the movements, is occupied[:(]...
The same he's done with Chengtu...he attacked with his armoured corp West of Chungking...and at the same time he sent paras over Chungking and Chengtu...result? despite the paras have been easily repulsed (only 20 men!!!), those two hexes appeared as occupied when it came to the movement phase, so a 1800 AV army was pushed back towards Kumming instead of Chungking[:@][:@]...

He's not coming for Eniwetok...i'd really like to...i have 1300 AVs there, 9 forts and 3 CD units...[:'(]

No, he's probably trying again for Ponape...the KB keeps lurking there, even if not LRCAPPING...

Bikini Atoll is growing very slowly...but however, as i said, i really care. Eniwetok is absolutely a fortress...no way to get there for him!
I have the 2nd Marine Div, 2 RCTs, 3 CD Units, 3 Arty Units, 1 Army Corp HQ, 3 AA units...tons of Engeneers...
Anyway, 2 strong surface TFs are guarding Eniwetok, against his Bombing runs, along with 2 PT TFs...i feel rather safe there

So, China is lost. No way to get my army there and save Chungking with this new trick.
Well...now we have to hold Ponape in a way or in another, because in few months all those chinese units could be brought back to the pacific...[:o]

Going to sleep guys. For today it's enough.

night all

No reflection on you GH, but I lost interest in this game some time ago because of all the loop hole exploiting that was going on.  Thought I'd come and have a look how things are now.

No change I see. No, wait.........I tell a lie. It's even worse.

Well, it'd be nice to turn Truk into a useless pit before those units come back from continental duty.

He can have as many troops as he wants. The point with PDU on is to bomb the crap out of him before he gets anything better than oscars in the air. In the Pacific, I just can't see where he can expect to use all those units offensively efficiently, now that even the KB is somewhat pushed to its limits.

He can go as far as he wants in the west. This doesn't make the road from PH to Tokyo Bay any longer for you, and this what matters most in my view [;)]

As a long-time avid reader of this and other aar's, but very rare poster, I have to say that I find myself truly rooting for you Gen. Hoepner. You seem to be not only up against the early power of the Japanese, but also the mechanics of the game. I find the massive use of small numbers of suicide para's disturbing. If you had some para's in China, what would stop you from dropping them every turn, in small numbers, on the enemy's advancing stacks? Your enemy would be unable to advance!

You've been most honorable in your discussions of this game. I can't imagine what you are going through, as it bothers me to the point of speaking up. I think that you may need to push some limits yourself. As I said, if you and your enemy were both dropping many suicide para's, the game would become a stalemate with no movement. It would become obvious that this tactic is not a tactic at all, but an abuse of the game. One, among many, that you are up against.

Continued good luck in this game.
