Vista issues

Post by Javakamp »

Over the weekend I started a new game vs the AI on my 4 month old laptop becasue it is wicked fast(compared to my 4 year old desktop) and has 2GB of memory, but has Vista on it.

Well the turns take 33% to 50% less time to run, but about every other turn while I am giving orders the game crashes to the desktop. I'm have the latest patched and I'm using AB's extended map for CHs 2.08. I never had the game crash while playing on XP.

Anyone else having any issues with Vista?

and has 2GB of memory,

This may be the problem, Vista is a memory HOG. I have 4 GB of memory, but after Vista is through with it there is only 2814 MB of memory available for use by my programs. So you may actually have less memory available to run the game with this rig than with your older rig.

Of course lack of RAM may not cause crashes, so take this with a grain of salt.

To find out how much memory you have available for use by your programs, go to control panel – system and maintenance – system.

I will endorse Jim's post. Vista reserves approximately 1 GB. So, a 2 GB system is not as stellar in the Vista world as it was with XP.

So far, the only problems i've heard about VISTA (up until now) is installation problems... once WITP is installed, people seem pretty happy with it.

I run WiTP on Vista without issue on a 2GB machine. The only time I run into issues is if I run WiTP with too much other stuff open in the background.

No issues with Vista here.

Although WitP only works on the primary display, as soon as I move it to the secondary, it stops updating the graphics.

It depends, with a 32 bit Windows (both Xp and Vista) it work until 3.5 GB RAM.
Windows servers are able to use more RAM, I don't know exactly but I think until 64 GB.
I never had the game crash while playing on XP.

At the moment XP is more constant.
I also use Vista and I don't have problem but I never tried this mod.

Do you have problem with WitP stock?
Which DirectX have you installed on Vista?

Vista is still, unfortunatly, a work in progress.
PC games can and will act strange with Vista, be patient, but I would not feel very good about using Vista on my PC let alone gaming with it.
Go back to XP for now until Microsoft releases another OS that is stable like XP was and still is.
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

I played several turns last night and had no problems. Go figure.

I check the memory available and it showed 1900mb, but it also uses that for graphics memory.

I'm pretty sure I have the latest version of Direct X.

I'm planing on replacing my desktop soon, and I'm thinking I might get XP on it.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I think there are problems if you install games in the program folder tree. This is a Vista issue and it doesn’t cause problems with all games, but it does cause problems with a lot of games. I don't have WitP installed in the program folder tree and I have no problems with Vista, so this too may be the cause for his crashes if he's installed his game into the program folder directory.

I run WitP with VMWare Fusion running XP on an iMac with 1GB. The only thing running on the XP image is WitP and some web browsers. No problems worth mentioning.
