I'd also like to know more about why DOWs occur. I mean, wars generally start for some specific reason. France DOWing Austria over Bavaria or just for the hell of it I can understand. Russia DOWing Spain in 1805 or Prussia DOWing UK defies understanding. There could maybe be a field for human players to type in a short comment or for AI opponents to provide a canned comment would help put things in perspective. This could be an enhancement feature later, no rush.

OK, at least Marshall recognizes the request.  As the AI is worked on and hopefully good reasons for going to war make it into the AI programming, those reasons could be communicated as part of the DOW message.

I always found some of the messages in Space Empires IV to be entertaining. There's certainly plenty of material from Napoleonic history to come up with several canned pompous announcements for why a DOW is necessary.  And no doubt players would enjoy inserting their own creative messages in their DOWs.

This is an intriguing idea, I think. Granted, they would get old fast if there were only a few of them. But, Matrix could start by adding a few entries, and then add more as patches are forthcoming. In fact, if they did it right, we might even be able to add our own entries ("But, I warn you, the sword, once unsheathed, may be difficult to re-sheath again.")

Also, another twist on this idea would be to have some, shall we call them, "comments" that are specific to a nation. I can certainly envision some of these nations being rather elaborate in the sophistry or linguistic legerdemain (thank you Mr. Spock) used as "reasons" for going to war.

If that last option were used, I would recommend that at least one such entry for France and Britain could appear in the opening dialog box stating France and GB are starting at war. Maybe one from EACH country, given how much they hated each other.

"French patriots have interrupted our Tea Time, and this is just not proper!"

"I wanted to take a balloon trip across the English Channel (with a few of my boys), but the darned British started SHOOTING at me! Of all the nerve."

Maybe we could even have cheesy French accents?
