Tomahawk Launch Questions

Post by gbnf »

Is there a minimum speed, range, or depth for a sub to launch a tomahawk missile? I was trying GIUK 1.0 and according to the manual I was supposed to use a tomahawk to take out the 1st surface ship. I was going at creep speed (5kts) and peri depth like the manual said. However when I tried to attack the ship the option for tomahawks was not available, only the torpedoes. I used torpedoes since I had so many of them, but I don't know why I couldn't use the tomahawks. What am I doing wrong?

When launching sub launched missiles, the game should do all the depth and speed adjustments for you.

You may well be inside the minimum launch range of the Tomahawk if you are being offered the option to fire torpedos.  There isn't a practical way to see the minimum ranges in that battleset.  If you have a saved game, feel free to send it to HC3@harpgamer.com and we can take a look.

I figured it out, you need to be at shallow depth to fire a tomahawk.

Hmm that's odd, I know I've tested it as has TonyE and we've come up with different results. To be 100% realistic, yes you should move to shallow depth and relatively low speed to launch missiles from a sub, so you are doing it the correct way.

Looks like something I'll need to look into a bit deeper, can you send us a saved game?

Took the save for a spin and see that you were trying to fire the Tomahawk from too shallow a depth.  There was a fair amount of debate when that rule was implemented in the code.

Your experience has swayed me to once again remove the depth check for launching missiles, in the next patch you will be able to fire the missiles from Periscope depth.  Thanks for the saved game, Shark and I were both obviously focused on firing the missiles from too deep a depth which the game does not restrict.
