all5n, I just thought of something. The reason why I probably couldn't see where to send the message to a saved file "outside", was the fact that it was not an attachment! I forgot that it is "not" the mail itself I am supposed to save outside Gmail, but the attachment to the mail!
So I just got my brother to send me an email "with" an attachment, and sure enough the ability to download it to a file outside Gmail presented itself to me. So with success I was able to do it!
