Kerry Joseph traded to to the Argos

ARGOS ACQUIRE CFL M.O.P. KERRY JOSEPH

March 6, 2008
Toronto - 2007 CFL Most Outstanding Player and Grey Cup champion QB Kerry Joseph is coming to the Toronto Argonauts after being acquired in a trade from the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In exchange for Joseph and a third round pick in the 2010 CFL Draft, the Argonauts sent OT Glenn January and DL Ronald Flemons to Regina along with a 2008 first round draft pick and a 2010 third round draft pick.

Commented Kerry Joseph, "When I heard of the trade, I was very excited and full of joy just thinking of wearing the Double Blue. The atmosphere in Toronto is great and now I get to be a part of it. The Argos players are a fantastic group of guys, both veterans who have worked as a tight unit for many years and new guys who I’ve befriended. The team has a winning attitude both on the field and in the community. I can’t wait for the season to start and to bring a Championship to the city of Toronto."

It looks like it came down to Joseph asking for a $125,000 raise, and the Roughriders only willing to give him a $25,000 increase.  The other option was a trade, and that is the way it went.

Isn't this similar to the problem the Riders had with Henry Burris not getting the salary he wanted before bolting to Calgary?

Similar, but not to the same amount of the money. Burris just didn't want to play in Regina so he made a small difference in money the reason he left. And how many championships does Burris have since leaving? Oh yes.. that's right.. zero. All Burris did by going to Calgary is give people in Regina an excuse to make funny signs to hold up during the games.

Joseph on the other hand is a loss, but an understandable one. I understand Tillmans point. Sign KJ and lose 5 other players, or keep those 5 players and go with one of your other QB's. Besides, with Austin gone, I'm not sure Joseph will be as effective. Austin was the perfect mentor for Joseph.

Kent Austin resigned as the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders to accept the offensive co-ordinator's position with his alma mater, the University of Mississippi Rebels.

With Joseph's physical play-style, it's also pretty unlikely that he'll stay relatively healthy for year after year. I'm kinda surprised Saskatchewan didn't ask for Michael Bishop in return, though, who I doubt has that big a contract, having never won the starting job until next year.

I believe they (Miller and Tillman) didn't think they needed another quarterback, they're confident that Marcus Crandell can perform in the offensive system. After training camp last season Austin basically said that it was a coin flip between Joseph and Crandell as to who would be the starter.

I've never seen him play, but a lot of "experts" are pretty high on Drew Tate, that he will be Saskatchewan's "quarterback of the future". I'm assuming the trade with Edmonton was to get Steven Jyles to be the backup while Tate is developing. I don't know where that leaves Durant -- cut or on the practise roster?

It certainly will be interesting seeing how this all unfolds and shakes out in the end.

Kerry Joseph had an uncharacteristically low number of interceptions and fumbles in 2007.  It was a career year in many ways including 4002 passing yards and 37 combined touchdowns (24 pass/13 rush).  Could he have kept numbers up even close to that in 2008 by playing in Regina?  I doubt it, but even numbers that were above average would likely have been good enough for another playoff berth.

This trade does make B.C. the favorite in the West once again, but which team will be the favorite to win the East?

Well, I'm not an Esks fan, but can tell you about Jyles' positives from seeing him here for a few years...he can throw the ball really hard. And that pretty much wraps it up. [:D] I cannot believe they got him, and nothing else, for Fred Perry.

Anyway, I'd have to say it's looking good for Toronto out East. Kevin glenn had a career year (and still isn't re-signed yet) for Winnipeg, Montreal's rebuilding, and Hamilton...well, I don't even need to say anything else.
