RE: NOW POSTED - Operation Sealion
I've downloaded and installed many user scenarios for httr and cota...but I'm having the same CTD as listed above

RE: NOW POSTED - Operation Sealion
Guys,
Put the files in:
\Conquest Of The Aegean\Scenarios
\Conquest Of The Aegean\Maps
Open: Cota_MM.exe (it is at the root directory of COTA)
Open the Map (File | Open | Browse to the new map), read error, and save map saving it in the directory above and overwriting the existing file.
From the Map file menu drop down select Generate Map Draw Cache, acknowledge the pop up and wait. When done close everything and start COTA.
Everything should now work correctly.

Thanks for posting. Frankly, however, I'll wait for scenarios that work without all that tweaking. I'm sure that, if I try to follow your directions, I'll only mess up my COTA file.

Your loss not mine.
Good scenario.
Good scenario.

After reading your follow up post, I felt like a wimp. So I followed your directions. Lo and behold it worked. And, yes, it does look like a good scenario.
Thanks again and thanks to Count Sessine.

Hm, I don't use a map cache, but is it recommended to make one for each map?

Needed? Dunno. Helps with something. Arjuna or someone can probably explain. They usually also do not come with the scenario that people make as they tend to be rather large.

Glad to hear it. These guys put in lots of their own time and sometimes a little work on our end is needed. I've haven't seen the directory error before, but I always go make the cache file. They can be large so its better if they don't include it and it doesn't take long to make it on our end.
RE: NOW POSTED - Operation Sealion
Can someone please advise the specific error message you got?
Re MapCaches. You do not need these to run the scenario, but havi9ng one speeds the map drawing ( which is a good thing ). The reason this was not included is to reduce the download size. If Count Sessine provides one, I'll ask Dan to add it to the downloads page.

"this maps graphic directory (Graphics\Map\NW Europe) does not exist on your machine and has been reset to the default directory. You must save the map to keep this change."
So the map was saved in something other than the default directory at creation.

No, that is not exactly right, it means that the map uses the map graphics from the 'Graphics\Map\NW Europe' directory, that should have been provided with the map.
So, create the 'Graphics\Map\NW Europe' directory, copy the files from the 'Graphics\Map\Default' directory into it (or any other map graphics you like), and the map should work without messing with the map editor.

Arjuna: that HTTR file is the one with the letters A, B, C instead of the top five height layers, so it doesn't really work. Anyway, I'm not much of a graphics guy, so that'll have to wait![]()
Sessine,
That HttR mod came from me.
Would you like me to make you a mod based on the HttR mod with the five height layers?

Vance, that would be really nice. I think the british countryside and the dutch would probably look alike in terms of 'green'ness in the summer. The 'NW Europe' colors were kindly provided by simovitch, but I think they seem autumn-like, not like summer. I've tried fiddling around with the colors and have made a mess of it already, hehe. I did manage to create a nice beach texture, which got me thinking about how maps should look.
We have two schools of thought in COTA and HTTR (or design philosophies): 1/ that it should look like a 'map', like a staff map, 2/ that it should look like a topdown satellite photo.
Most (if not all) of the map mods I have seen for HTTR and COTA confuse, mix the two. Fx satellite photo-looking polder, woods, towns/cities, but staffmap-like contours, roads. It seems to vary a lot.
I think overall I prefer 1/, the staff map look. That is, after all, the level we're playing COTA at. After all, only pilots got to see the terrain from 2/ in WW2, not mere mortal groundhuggers [:)]

RE: New scenario, imminent release - Operation Sealion
I've tried downloading the HTTR colours version of this scenario several times. I'm following all the instructions (I think!) but the end result is a map in COTA colours. Any ideas?

There are 2 files associated with map graphics - MapPat.bmp and MapPatA.bmp.
these 2 files must be named as above, and must reside in your Conquest of the Aegean/Graphics/Map/Default folder.
It's good to keep copies of these in another folder that you can easily recognize.

I appear to already have those.

Done.
This took a lot more effort than anticipated. Contrast leaves a little bit to be desired, but at least it looks like England in summer.
Count Sessine, if you want the MatPat.bmp file PM me an email address to send it to.

On the subject of map patterns. With COTA now you can have multiple sets of map patterns. These can reside in their own folders under the Graphics/Map directory. In the MapMaker, you specify which set to use - see screen dump below. I would strongly recommend that you leave the Default map patterns as is and link to an alternate set, rather than replacing the default set.

Or if you have a favourite map graphic (I like using the back to paper)and don't want to change the graphics for each map, I use the jsgme mod tool to swap my map graphics, very easy to use and set up.
