It's intended to increase the realism of the Japanese industry model...

So, like many a great technological achievement, it seems they invented the marston mat by accident...

You must consider the possibility that the Allies are merely trying to frighten you with claims that Doug is dead.

The claims were broadcast by Japanese radio news. They must be true.

You're aware that the original plan for the Pearl Harbor strike envisioned scuttling the Hiryu and Soryu afterwards?... Eventually they figured out how to get them home.

I am stunned at that. I had heard they had a fuel problem that required working out. That they would seriously consider scuttling to front line carriers is simply mind numbing. Was that a serious 'plan' or somebody's way of saying to certain staff members "You bozos better figure this out!"?

He is correct. The high speed run from the last refueling point was such that withdrawall was not possible for these vessels - it was to be at "battle speed" - and it is severe on fuel consumption.

Eventually they figured out that if they carried extra fuel in 55 gallon drums - they could dump it into the tanks, lose the drums - and then conduct flight operations - with just enough fuel to go home.

But in WITP you have no such problem - I can sail to the US West Coast - sinking all and sundry for a month - as WITP/CHS was when I found it - and I did just that. Tankers and ships appear mid ocean with full tanks. RHS removed half the tankers - they appear in Japan about 20 December - to simulate the consumed fuel to get to mid ocean - and you cannot use them to sail for a month any more.

The first turn is unique. A PRE EXISTING TF will sail for vast distances - a week of real sailing - and so TF 1 and 2 (with fuel) can end up almost anywhere reasonable. Just say "go there" and they either do - or make a heroic effort and go most of the way. No other turn is like that. And newly created TFs are not nearly as likely to do that. The more TFs loading at a port - the less they will go - until you reach the point they do not move at all on turn one - but still are loading.
