Well, I wasnt originally going to write an AAR for this game, but looking back, I felt it was time to give it a shot, this being my third game and all. Added to that is the fact that my opponent is also writing one, so I decided it was only fair to give any readers a glimpse from this side of the war.
Im around a week or so behind where the game is as I start this, so Ill try and catch up ASAP. I will try to put pictures ect in once I've caught up.
I will probably be discussing details of my strategic and economic plans, so unfortunately - No dennishe - Atleast until the game is over. [8D]
Also, I forgot to mention this the first time. Please, if any of you more veteran players spots anything thats clearly stupid, suicidal, or any combination thereof, a little input as to why and how to fix it would be appreciated. This is no doubt easier once I catch up and get pictures ect up.
Introduction and Setup
The House Rules we used for this game are as follows. They were originally proposed by dennishe, and we adjusted them a little to suit both of us.
Settings
Sub Doctrines = off
FOW = on
Allied damage control = on
Hist 1st turn = off
PDU = on
Vary Setup = off
Dec 7 surprise = on
Reinforcements = historical
Auto sub ops = off
Expand at start = off
Automatic upgrades = off
Accept replacements = off
Turn cycle = 1
Rules
1. The allied player on turn 1 will not enter ANY orders to simulate the Japanese achieving total surprise. But no carrier hunting at turn one!
2. For the Japanese player, all first turn landings need to be in range of long range cap of Jap fighters (land based), for example: Java, Sumatra, Timor, and Sulawesi are NOT OK. Philippines, Borneo etc. are OK. Scenario defined (historic) landings outside this limit are fine.
3. Only one Japanese port attack on turn 1.
4. Air or ground units belonging to the Kwangtung, China, or India commands may not leave their areas unless PP's are spent to change their command. China command (Japanese and Allied allready in China units are free to move "east"). A few Kwantung units are in china command at the start. Those few (4 mongolian divs) may be used as if part of china command. Allied China units must pay PPs going outside china to the north, west or south. Except the units in or assigned to Burma Command at the start.
5. The Japanese are not allowed to enter the Panama and Aden passages. In addition no Japanese units allowed within 4 hexes of the exits from the Aden and Panama passages.
6. No Allied 4 engined bombers allowed on Naval Attack below 10000 ft
7. No 2 engine Bomber units allowed to upgrade to 4 engine bombers as the allies.
8. PT Boats: PT boats can only be in a TF by themselves. Max PT TF 8. Max number of PTs in one hex 16.
9. No more than 6 ships in an ASW TF.
10. No submarine Invasions - unless specialized landing forces are carried - raiders etc.
11. Amphibious invasions must be at a dot or base. No empty coast hexes can be landed on.
12. Parachute invasions must be at a dot or base. No empty hexes can be landed on.
13. Japanese subs cannot change/upgrade their scout planes.
14. Japanse "light" air units (DBs etc) may not be upgraded beyond "Lilies" or their upgrades.
15. No Corsairs on aliied CVs of any description - except for ferrying - till 1/44.
16. Maximum of 50 Aircraft per AF Size - Does not apply to Float Planes
17. Limit of 20,000 troops for Atolls / Invasions can bring twice this, but should be reduced to proper level within a few weeks.
Opening Moves
So, with that out the way, a little look at what exactly I planned for turn one;
KB I wasnt sure if I wanted to split off the two smaller CVs to operate in the SRA right from the start, so I opted to send the whole group to attack Pearl Harbour. I shifted all the Kate groups to Port Attack, and moved one Val group to AF Attack, as the 250kgs arent the most effective thing to be dropping on the BBs.
China The most pressing target here is Hong Kong. After that is taken, I've got a lot of spare forces to begin a push northwards with. I assigned two divisions along with most of the artillery and engineer units to attack. I also split up another division further south and moved two fragments closer incase I needed more firepower later.
Malaya Landings at Kuantan and Kota Bharu on the first turn, along with additional troops shipped to Signora. A further force is being assembled to land at Mersing and cut off retreat within the week. The 2nd Guards division will split up and 2/3 will also head for Signora rather than Victoria Point. Finally, a SNLF force will be paradropped onto Singkep to capture it. An air raid on the airfields at Singapore should buy me a few days and keep the worst of his air power down for now.
Borneo Landings to occur at Kuching, Miri and Brunei on the first day. A force will land at Balikpapan later in the week, while forces from Brunei will move to capture Tarakan later on.
Philippines Landing at Aparri, Laoag and Vigan in the north, and Naga and Legaspi in the south during the first few days. Also landings at Jolo Is. and Butuan in the next week or so. An air raid on Clark Field to hopefully neutralise some of the air power in the area. CVL will be in the area to help mop up allied shipping.
Rest of the SRA A landing at Kendari will occur in the first week, supported by the CVL, and later CV Hiryu which will be detached from the KB. The KB proper will head south to support invasion of Rabaul which will occur shortly after.
Pacific As the historic force directed at Wake Is. is iffy at best, and Wake is outside of my fighter cover according to HRs, I will postpone the Wake invasion by a few days to gather a more significant force. Also, BBs Ise and Hyuga are headed to the area to support landings at Rabaul and possible other targets. Landings will also occur at Makin, Tarawa and Nauru during the first week. Guam will be landed at during the first day, and then the South Seas Det. will head to support the landing at Kendari, and later Java.
Submarines Set up picket lines north and west of PH, between Java and Borneo, in Makassar straight, and west of Wake Is. Also sent a individual subs into to Singapore straits and around Soerabaja.
Economy Converted all Nate and Claude production to Zeroes, upped Val and Kate production by around 40%, Betty production by around 20%. Adjusted engine production accordingly. Increased Vehicle and Armnament production slightly, will monitor this daily. Converted some Merchant Yards to Naval, increased Naval by approx 200 points. Expanded Repair Yard at Tokyo to 200. I'm very torn as to where to go with ship production. Left it untouched for now, but considering halting Yamato or Musashi or both and accelerating carriers. Alternatively may halt some SS and accelerate only a few CV, most likely Hiyo and Junyo first.
Ill post the combat report for the first turn soon. Ill highlight important peices to save you from scrolling thorugh the entire thing, and offer comments where relevant.

Hopefully this is enough to close the airfield for a few days. My bomber groups got beat up somewhat, but theyll now be reassigned to Naval attack so hopefully they wont incur too many losses after this.

As was this.
More landings tommorow, and a lot more land action as my forces try to get a foothold in the SRA. Brunei and Kuching are both vital as both make good locations for AFs. As is Kota Bharu.
RE: Elouda(J) vs dennishe(A) - CHS158
Looking back on the last post I made, I concluded that posting the whole combat log is not the brightest of ideas. So for now ill just include the most intresting peices, and once I catch up, relevent diagrams and screencaps.
So, the second day of the war dawns -
The turn began with a variety of landings during the night. Guam, Naga, Laoag, Brunei, Kota Bharu, Aparri, Legaspi, Kuching, Kuantan. Brunei and Kuching remain high priority targets to get my airgroups stationed there ASAP.
SS Plunger took two near misses from an ASW TF during the night, but didnt live up to her name..
My destroyer group, lead by Nagara, proceeded to wreck havok on the enemy ships near Legaspi.

A uneventful bombardment of Kota Bharu also took place, but didnt cause any significant casualties.
More landings occured in the morning at the same locations.
An airstrike on the port at Singapore by 61 Nells was launched in hopes of catching any ships that were slow in leaving. Unfortunately they found one PG, while loosing 4 planes and getting 46 damaged.
Simultaneously a similar strike occured at Manila, and fared no better. 36 Nells and 18 Betties with a light escort made the attack, and found no sign of enemy ships. 5 planes were lost. Of note is the two Zeroes who were flying escort engaging 29 P40E's and sustaining no damage while damaging 8 bogies in return.
Seemingly the trend for today, the vaunted KB also failed in its airstrike, as the TF commander had wisely decided to move a little further away from the port during the night. The result? The KB was conviniently out of the Kates combat radius, so they ended up packing the oh-so-useful 250kgs rather than torpedoes.

The KB will now rendevous with the tanker TF northwest of PH, refuel, and move to Truk. There Hiryu will be detached to operate near Java with CVL Ryujo, and the rest will move to support upcoming landings south.
More scattered airstrikes by the Allies across the SRA, but to little avail. A bombardment took place at Kuantan with moderate results.
Later in the day, attacks by ground forces caused Legaspi, Laoag, Brunei, Guam, Naga, Kota Bharu and Miri to fall. The attack at Kuching was repulsed, but my forces only suffered moderate casualties. As there are more troops landing, I may make another push as soon as tommorow. I need that base.

RE: Elouda(J) vs dennishe(A) - CHS158
I like the highlights rather than the data mining, so I'm happy with your more minimalist style. Keep up the good work! Thanks for writing this AAR, since I am a new player to this game I'll follow this one (and your opponent's) to see how things works out. It's a lot less daunting catching one at the start than diving into a 150 page monster AAR...

Thanks for your comment. I prefer this style too, its much easier for me to get my points across rather than trying to shove them somewhere amongst a wall of text.
I have to get a move on, as I'm almost two weeks behind where we are ingame. So, without further ado;

Apologies for the break, I've been away on holiday...
Hm, I'm falling even further bahind the actual game date. Not good. Time to play a little catch up.
10th December
More landings throughout the night in both Malaya and the PI, supported by bombardments. A further bombardment at Kuching to help soften it up for a final push by my infantry. Quite a bit of sub action also, with I-172 and I-20 both taking heavy damage.
A lot of scattered air raids by the allies in the morning, as is becoming the norm. They had very little effect, though Im starting to get nervous about those torpedo bombers as I close in on Singapore and the other major bases in the SRA. My forces retaliated in kind, and with better results.

11th December
More troops land at Kuching during the night, and CA Chokai and her escort run down more cargo ships in the night.
The rest of the day is surprisingly quiet, ad consists mostly of my aircraft sinking mostly defenceless targets. The allies make only a few raids, to no effect.
Finally, my troops make a push for Hong Kong...and get beaten back soundly. However, my engineers manage to start chipping away at the forts, so its only a matter of days before it falls.
Kuching is still holding out, but the allies are taking heavy casualties now, so I expect it to fall tommorow.

Further south at Jolo Island, a landing force escorted by a pair of ML's (Yes, ML's. I have no idea what I was thinking.) run across another PT group, and one of the MLs takes a hit. Despite this, they do an admirable job of handling PG Luzon who shows up shortly afterwards.

13th December
Despite the heated action yesterday, the 13th is much more quiet. My forces are moving towards Balikpapan, and Kendari will follow shortly. CL Nagara and escorts will cover the landings, and CA Chokai and another CA group will support once they return from rearming. The same goes for CVL Ryujo.
The airwar is as usual, but finally his torpedo bombers begin to tax my shipping..

More catching up. The good news is that I've been archiving screenshots in preparation of once I catch up. So even if I do end up lagging behind the game by a few days, Ill have stuff to show. Hopefully that wont be the case. So, without further ado...

THe morning is filled with the usual attempts by the allies to damage my shipping. Several IJA squadrons have moved to Malaya by now and are providing some cover for my ships ferrying troops and supplies there.
I've also moved my Betty and Nell squadrons closer to the front lines, with main bases at Brunei, Kuching, Kota Bharu and Signora.
More air attacks in the afternoon, along with some good retaliatory strikes by my own airgroups.
Its clear that the allies want to try and make off with all the fuel or oil they can, to deny me from having it. If thats the case, atleast theyll pay for it with their ships...

The troops at Hong Kong recommenced bombardments on allied positions today, while an assault on Lunga was repelled with almost no losses to the defending allied forces.
Demember 15th - Bloodshed at Balikpapan
The day that would mark the first true surface battle of this war began like any other. Some landings during the night, along with the RO-62 torpedoing an AK.
The air attacks early in the day occured as usual, but an attack on shipping at Tarakan was bloodied by a group of Zeroes on LRCAP. A similar event occured later in the day at Kuantan, where a group of Nates and the odd Zero thwarted another air raid, although the CA Takao was hit by one stray bomb which failed to penetrate.
The allied torpedo bombers remain a nuisance. They put a torpedo into a minesweeper off Balikpapan...foreshadowing what was to happen a few hours later.
The cruiser group consisting of Kako and Furutake withdrew yesterday to Palau to rearm. The group lead by CA Chokai is at Palau currently rearming. CVL Ryujo has just departed Palau to return to her station near Balikpapan. In these circumstances, the only group left covering the landings at Balikpapan is CL Nagara, and her group of destroyers, some of which are already low on torpedoes...

Despite a furious struggle followed by an attempt to flee after loosing her escort, Nagara, having disengaged from combat, sinks 28,000 yards away from the enemy TF after taking 76 shells, the majority from the Repulse's secondary battery and the two enemy CLs. The Repulse's main battery only scores one hit, which is on the Nagara. While doing this, she inflicts (with a little help from her escort, which sadly didnt stay afloat too long) severe damage on 6 enemy destroyers.
With the escorts out of the way, the british group moves in to do what damage they can to the defenceless transports, before theyre forced to withdraw by the threat of airpower and their own damage.

At the same time further north, CA Maya and CA Ashigara along with CL Kuma and some destroyers, wreck havok on a PT group. DD Asakaze is set aflame when one of the PT boats, having expended its torpedoes, makes a charge at her with machineguns blazing.
The group forces at Tarakan make slow progress to capture the base, while the forces at Hong Kong finally begin to break through the allied defences. Hong Kong will most likely fall within a few days.
CVL Ryujo is ordered to steam at full speed towards Balikpapan and onwards to Java with the faint hope of revenge...Admiral T. Takagi who is in command of the task force does not wish to return empty handed.

Pretty good result for an outnumbered, outgunned, low on ammo SCTF. A few posthumous medals there.
