Has anyone ever made it 25 missions with B17 [&:]

I receved my copy of B17 from one of the co-designers way back as a kid . Charley owned a local millatary miniture/game /greenhouse and I remember him stating even the designers never made it threw 25 missions.

I never did.....

History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

Just got Command and Colours: Ancients so will give it a go this week....Can't find a copy of Peloponnesian War anywhere. Noticed that Republic of Rome by Robert Haines’ and Richard Berthold’s at Valley games is soon to be reprinted and that is a game that can be played solo.

Remember if you're as unerwhelmed with the original cardboard map supplied wth the game, either:

1. Use plexiglass to keep it flat - not my preferred option.

2. Buy the Battlelore Epic mounted map - by the same designer (Richard Borg), same scale, beautiful green field and with no name brandings to ruin the feel at all. I bought 2 and love them. Made by the same mob that gave us "Memoir 44" - Days of Wonder.

3. Eventually buy the new C&C:A Expansion Packs 2 and/or 3 which now contain bona fide mounted map boards of the Battlelore quality. GMT listened to its customers on this one.

***

Warefare 1, I'm still very much into this system.

Interestingly, on the Consimworld forum for the game, who should drop by but none other than the man who took card driven games to the next level after "We the People" - Ted Racier of "Paths of Glory" fame.

Having been taught the game by a friend, he fell in love with its elegance and right away noted the immense suitability for solitaire. He just bought the first title, every expansion soon to follow! What a great hobby with guys like these.

The closest I ever came was 24 - with a bomber that had only 1 of its original 10 crewmembers left (the radio operator). The bomber suffered a fuel tank leak over Germany and the crew bailed out (rescued) - just to see if I could get the last crew member through 25 missions, I sent him on another mission with a fresh bomber and crew - which took a 20mm shell to the bomb bay - finis [:(]

What a sad story...couldn't you have just pensioned him off and given him a medal. I bet he really appreciated climbing aboard that last flight!

Bringing back memories talking of these games.  B17 I dont think I ever did 25 missions.  Pattons Best was a solitaire tank game by AH that I never found time to see to the end either.  Ambush was fun too.  But for me the most memorable solitaire were standard games not intended for solo where I played both sides as best I could and kept charts and pretended people I knew were assigned to each.  Things such as Blitzkrieg with SPIs add on modules, or Richtofens War with an extensive pilot list for both sides, or AHs Anzio where I kept detailed results for each units losses and inflicteds.  Back in the 70s when I had more time on my hands...
Enlisted during Nixon, retired during Clinton then went postal - joined the USPS, then retired from that during Obama.

LOL - yes, that certainly would have been a bummer to be him in real life. The funny thing was I named the original crew after friends and family members - never told my brother-in-law about his ignimonious fate [:D]

I found the damage chart from this game - P3 Bomb Bay: Roll 2D per shell hit- 3: Bombs - roll 1D - 5,6: Bombs detonate - B-17 destroyed and entire crew KIA.

VG's Ambush was always a fun game as a kid. I have enjoyed B-17, which is probably the classic solitaire wargame.

Anyone played:

Avalon Hill's Patton's Best
Compass Games Silent War

Silent War looks very interesting and there is a sequel coming out about the Atlantic called Steel Wolves.

I second that. Raid on St. Nazaire gets my vote for #1 Solitaire War Board Game of all time.

Great game. If you Google 'Dewkid' you'll find a fellow that has done a fine java implementation of this game. He's also done an outstanding conversion of the AH games Wizards and my all time favourite, Magic Realm.
