Chronicles of a war : Kingtiger vs. Josan

A large attack has been launched in the centre with the objective of destroying a German armored korps. This attack has failed and has left our flanks exposed. I expect a major German armored attack in this sector that could wipe out my advancing army. If the Germans fail, the boot will be on the other foot.

July 4th 1944. Clear.

The soviets are making a great pressure in the Velikiye Luki sector. A lot of communist here[:'(] We didnt able to find a path to rescue the Pz korps isolated here. The attacks failed miserably [:(]

Im paying for my over-extended lines ( from the the Leningrad gates to defending the Dnieper river line front). Maybe its time to give some ground in order to shorter the front and get more divisions as reserve.

Anyway, our allies, Finland, Hungary and Romania are happy looking that the soviets are still far away from their frontiers. And Germany is pleased in that way so we can get their resources.

Destroyed the encircled Pz Korp in the centre.
Launched a large scale counter attack on the force trying to relieve the encircled Pz Korps
- A plotting error in the south in this sector failed to encircle the enemy armor. This should surly result in a Tank army being destroyed.
-The attack on the north managed to cut off another Pz korps but failed to destroy it.

7/11/44. Sunny.

At last Hitler accepted the advices from OKH and He ordered a withdraw of AGN to Pskov line. Now we can cover the exposed north flank of the Hot Velikiye Front.

Another counterattacks were launched around Velikiye Luki. Now, 2 soviet tank armies were destroyed...

AGS still are defending the Dnieper...

12thSS Hiterjugend, for his courage, for his loyalty, and because they are the new seed of the future Great Germany, got the honour to get the news konigstiger...

A very large amount of German airforce has been committed to the Velikiye Front and has suffered massive losses. Our troops in this sector have been stopped in there track. Zhukov has been sent to to stable the front and to launch a counter attack

Another attack has been ordered near Vitebsk and the massed armor in this sector was no match for the once fearful SS.

Not much action has happened since last time I posted. This week is a very different story.

1. Zhukov has launched an attack encircling 1ss Pz korps, 1Pz korps and 2 inf korps around Vitebsk.

2. Shock Armies have attacked in the general direction of Daugavpils (about 5 hexes away) in an attemp to tie down German armor in this sector. Attacks have been launched South of their positions to disrupt the supply of the German relief attemp of the Vitebsk pocket.

3. Konev has encircled Pskov but failed to dislodge the defenders.

The bulk of Germany's armor seems to be in between Pskov and Daugavpils so we expect a very strong counter attack at Pskov. I assume Germany has set up her Pz korps for a defensive roll so the counter attack if any will not be as strong as it could have been.

Attacks east of Daugavpils have little or no value in such dire cirmcumstances.

The Vitebsk pocket looks like it will remain closed with all troops encircled being destroyed. A counter attack west of the pocket seems unlikely as the Pz korps in this sector have low supply. No Pz korps have been spotted SW or South of the city.

Germany's air defence of the Fatherland seem weak this week with 2 factories suffering damage. I expect a major committment of air force to the front but Im not sure if there is much to committ.

Josan has surprised me many times with brilliant attacks and I always fear what he can do with his armor. I hope this is not one of them.

8/8/1944. Clear.

One more time Kingtiger hits me hard...with the last soviet movements the OKH have order to AGN a full retreat to our second line of defence. The Pskov garrison is doomed, but they are delaying the soviet supply advance one week more... and time is going...
Army Group North new defence is placed in Riga ( 8 hexes away from soviets ) to Daugavpils ( 4 hexes from soviet spearheads ).

Panzer forces from AGC, with the support of LSSAH and Das Reich divisions, just arrived from western front, attacked the soviets in Vitebsk. One Soviet Tank Army retreated and we were able to get a exit to our trapped troops here. But our flanks are very weak, looking the massive soviet armour placed here , we are not very happy about their future [:(]

OKH thoughts: Well, historically, at this time, the USSR was at the gates of Warsaw and Odessa... Finland, Hungary, Italy and Romania will be many many time with us !... Me-262 Jet is on production... and time is passing by...

The great battles around Vitebsk have been a Soviet blunder. The strength of the Soviet offense has been its reserves which have been deployed in a position to counter the German relief attempt.

Soviet armor has encircled the relieving 2 Pz korps attacking the Vitebsk pocket but has been repulsed. The attack on the encircled Vitebsk pocket started too early pushing out 1 ss Pz and 1 INF korps.

The Battle is not over but a great opportunity has been lost.

The battles around Vitebsk really are not finished. The German plan failed! [:@] Our attacks to encircle the 2 Soviet spearheads Tanks Armies and cut off their supply were repulsed...One Pz Korps have lost the contact with our forces so surely they will be destroyed [:(] More reinforcements we are sending to this sector.

Some movements over AGS front! Partisan attacks out supplied the city of Dnepropetovsk. The Soviet Army getting profit of this situation attacked and got the city...We attacked ( and reconquered the city ) destroying one Soviet Army. Seems we will see action here right now...

The Vitebsk battles are now over with the last Pz korps surrendering this week. My forces in this area have attacked in 2 different directions

South

Smolensk has been cut off with 2 INF and 2 PZ korps in the pocket. This city has been a thorn in the Soviet side as it has reduced supplies to the front.

North

The 3 Pz korps that have escaped dustruction in the Vitebsk battles have been encircled again with 1 ss Pz korps surrendering. Supply is a very big problem for the Soviets in this area as we are about 2 hexes from Minsk and getting supply from around Smolensk/Vitebsk.


Dnepropetovsk is back in Soviet hands and we prepair to assult the out os supply German army. Our Reinforcement program has just been completed in this area so the lack of German supply has happened at a good time for us.

8/22/1944. Clear.

The soviets spearhead advanced very fast and arrived at the gates of Minsk.
Knowing that these forces still have not got the time to rest and recover after the Vitebsk battles and with low supply we launched an attack against them but with a great success this time!!!
With the support from Luftwaffe 2 tank armies were destroyed and another retreated with heavy losses... This action will give some breath to us as we stopped them here...

The german forces trapped in the Mogilev pocket retreated with no problem to our supply line. Only remains the Mogilev garrison with the special mission to try to delay the soviet supply advance...

We tried to destroy the Pz korps in the Minsk area but failed.

The Mogilev garrison has fallen with all troops advancing in this area.

Reinforcements are in transit in the south for a large scale attack.

September 5th 1944. Clear.

We are waiting for the next soviet offensive...All holes were closed...

We attacked some soviet armies that just arrived in front of our main line of defence getting 3 retreats [8D] Also we are reforcing the german line along the front and raising 2 new Pz korps as armor reserve.

The front line runs from Riga-Vilna-Minsk to Prypet Marsh-Kiev-Dnieper river to Dnepropetovsk (soviet hands).

No surprises. The soviets main attacks still are from Vilna to Minsk where seems he has the best troops.

The OKH thinks that the threat of an attempt of a soviet direct blow through Poland aiming Berlin directly is real. New Orders have been issued...

AGS, still defending Kiev and the Dnieper... is waiting the response of the Fuhrer after the proposal of Manstein to do a general withdrawal to Central Europe of all AGS.

The strategy of Manstein is to try to free a lot of divisions (30 inf div) to send to Poland. Make a mobile defense warfare in the South knowing the winter is near and the soviet supply only will advance 1 per week. The same strategy from Kursk: try to destroy the advancing, tired and with low supply soviet troops.

No response still from the Fuhrer.

One mistake in this stage of the war could be decisive...

A very poor planned and plotted attacks this week. We had a great chance to open up the German lines and encircle a number of troops. Vilna has been encircle but we failed to storm the city. A plotting error and bad planning retreated 1 Pz korps south of Vilna but and another attack retreated a Pz korps that was about to be encircled. This front might cost us deerly if German mobile troops are in the area.


Very poor recon in the north showed no troops at all and we assumed the Germans retreat from there positions. We advanced but found the German line had not moved at all. Next turn the Soviet army in the north will suffer a major defeat.

9/26/1944. Clear.

The last turn of good weather! The temperatures are dropping and snow and rain will be present from now...

We attacked the soviet armored spearheads around Vilna this week with the support of 12SS Hitlerjugend at full strenght, arriving from West Front a couple of weeks ago. His Konigstiger and Jagdpanthers were decisive to retreat 2 tank soviet armies and surrender 1 tank army with 734 tanks [8D]

But some attacks failed in this sector and some Inf Korps that supported the attacks of panzers are now very exposed against a soviet counterattack...

Other attacks from AGN were launched with mixed results.

AGS still on the Dnieper... still waiting a Fuhrer response about Manstein Plan.
