I Think I Have Created a Monster

Post by Max 86 »

I have recently started a new association that has led to some incredibly competitive results over the first two seasons.

The Association is a 5-team in 4-divisions, 2-league model that started with real 1990 players. The thought was for a 20-team league using major league players would get rid of the average to poor performers and have a higher concentration of better talent spread among fewer teams.

Apparently it has worked. My first season I finished 3rd place, 20 games out with a pitching staff era <4.00. I have never had a team finish 20 games out with a Puresim Association ever.

I have an offense that includes (1990) Boggs, Gant, McGuire, Strawberry, Bonilla and there are games I am lucky to score more than 2 runs because of the level of pitching of the other team.[&o]

I have had to go back to managing most games because letting the AI manage in this league with so many close, 1-2 run games is a recipe for losing.

The second season ended with my team in second place, 1 game back with 3 games to go and those three against the first place team. All three games were one run differentials and I lost 2 of them, game 3 - a 2-run homer in the bottom of the ninth![:@] Another first for me and Puresim, a season coming down to the last out of the last game![&o]

If you have been having too much success with Puresim lately, I suggest you try something similiar and see if you get the same results. It may give you a tougher time and even change the way you manage your teams.

Sounds like you're enjoying your PS experience and that's great news.

If you really want to stretch the limits of your patience, try managing a poor real-life team against the rest of the league.

With my 1979 A's my horrible bullpen was something I could not overcome. Perhaps I could have picked up my shoe instead of the bullpen phone. Maybe The Chief would've sent me someone decent to put on the mound.[:'(]

That is awesome!!! It is funny that you picked 1990 to do this. I remember back in 1990 when I was fifteen, I tried to do exactlly what you are doing, but with Statis-Pro baseball. I spent hours up in my bedroom setting up the league and teams. I got about 10 games into the season before I realized how much work it would be to play all the games and compile all the stats... but in my head I had dreams of batting and pitching leader boards, exciting pennant races... all with only the All-Stars of the game. In the end I think I had more fun setting up my mock draft than I did flipping those "fast action cards". For me 1986 - 1992 will always be my "Golden Age".

This really brings back the memories. For my next association I think I'll do exactly what you've done. Maybe now with PS my dream can be realized.

My 1990 team was pretty poor even with those names on it. I had to get rid of Strawberry and McGuire because of thier low batting averages. I had better luck in the second season with more high avg hitters and fewer power hitters. And an overhauled rotation. I enjoy builing the team through the draft and FA as much as I like playing out the seasons.

I used to love statis pro bb and played with my friends throughout high school. Waiting to see that next number caused the same anxiety as watching the ball animation flight in PS![:D] Hurry and get it over with, you're killin' me![:D]

Max 86, just curious, what settings did you use when setting up your association?

Statis-Pro.........Until I discovered Pure Sim, SPBB was my all-time favorite. I have fond memories of putting all the player cards into a grocery sack and "drafting" our teams that way. Statis-Pro board game and C-64 version kept our morale high during many nights at sea in the Navy.

More than 20 years later, I still have a couple of green log books, where I kept stats for my team's players.

I'm not sure how the basic game engine works in Pure Sim, but I suspect it's similar to Statis-Pro. I've seen pitchers with very poor Stuff strike out the side. They must have drawn three straight low "PB" numbers.

By the way, PS could use a few more "Z" cards, IMO.

I selected Puresim mode, no DH, regional finances on, 140 games per season. The league is called the Gulf Coast Baseball Association so all teams are from Tx, La, Ms, Al, Ga and Fl. which sets the regional finances accordingly and like mentioned above used real players starting in 1990, 4 5-team divs in 2 leagues.
