Anyone Who is fighting Orzel....

Post by Orzel Bialy »

ok...I'm beginning to think that I over re-acted a bit in an effort to keep people from attacking me with what I call the "airdrop/bull-rush" style of attack.
While reading posts I was struck with how much airdrops were being used to cause havoc in rear areas...that, in turn, allowed the attacker to then "bull-rush" in with the ground forces and hit a foe that had been forced to divide it's forces.
The best way to counter that in my book was: mines...use them to hold up the "bull rush" and buy time to kick the crap out of the airdrops....before turning back to take on the ground assault.
My reasoning was I thought the airdrops were getting a bit out of hand...as paratroopers were seldom used in every engagement...so I figured if I had to buy more AA to counter the air assaults (and therefore less armor and infantry to fight with)then I would buy 10% of mines with my total pts and make life hell at the front for my foes.
After a couple fights I am now thinking that my "mine tatic" is no better a "over-kill" use of a weapon than the airdrops I detest so much.
So...anyone fighting me who wants to stop and re-figure a battle with limits on a few weapons categories...just let me know. After all...if everyone throws mines around...then the movement of battles would slow to a snails pace....no different than buying arty with half your points.
I apologize...being new to Pbem's perhaps I was not aware of an unwritten rule about mines. I now see that I may have crossed the line in trying to stop the "airdrop/bullrush" tactic...
So...let me know what you think...and I'll be glad to accomodate.

what is the unwritten rule about mines??

your mines in Summer Fury will only delay the fact soon Thielmann will at the head of a column marching inexorably towards Siberia. Reg inf can pick through mines as well as engineers and you can even blow them up! The great and glorious red bear laughs at your mines!

Ok...as long as you feel that way about it! LOL.

I just wanted to make sure that I hadn't broken an unspoken law by deploying mines. :)

Outside of that...if everyone is ready to rumble...lets go. I'm off today...have to run to the bank and then pay a bill...but after that the day is my own. The wife and kids are off with the sister-in-law...so Orzel will have at least six or seven hours to do nothing but screw-off all day with SPWAW. (lawn work was finished yesterday before I went to work...wife was impressed with my drive....little did she know my real reasons! :D )

Ok...back to you all.

I try to set limits on most things in a PBEM games. I feel that it is important to play the game with certain things in balance. Everything can unbalance a game if taken to the extreme. I think that I am in the minority though.
I like to play with true troop on/ rarity on. The reason for this is that your opponent will not me able to buy 100 French Char-B's or all Legionare troops. Yes this limits what you can buy but the Russians in mid 1941 shouldn't be able to field 100 KV-1's against your German PZIII's.
As for mines I don't think that any mines should be allowed in meeting engagments. The defender in advance engagments should be allow say 50 points worth and the defender in assault engagments should be allowed as many as he wants.
Limits on air power and artillary should be enforced also. I feel strongly that it should depend on the time period. If it is the begining of the war with Russia. Germany should have air supperiority and able to take quite alot of it to deal with the heavy tanks. On the other hand it it is later in the war, Russia should have air supperiorty and allowed signigicant advantage in artillary.
Now each PBEM opponenty is different and as such feels differently about realism and historical accuracy but if you present things in the right manor and they agree I feel you end up having a better game and can incorporate a balance that both players can agree to.
With that said if your opponents are mum on mines that knock yourself out. If you do not want your opponets droping a bunch of men in your back field argue for no air sections.
I am currently playing an PBEM game where I am the French against the Germans Mid 1940's. We are playing with Troop rarity off. Well lets say that French Char B's are probably only second to the British Matilda at that time and I have alot of them. I think I will win but not because I am a better player(I think the guy I am playing is better than me) but I have a great tank that my opponent will have a extreme difficulty to deal with. And yes he has Sig33's, Stug's and 88's. Yes his reenforcements were all tanks but I do not think it will matter.
Anyway just my 2 cents.

i think as long as limits are agreed upfront that generally resolves any issues...
