Any Lost Victories Veterans around?

Post by Peterk1 »

After not playing SP for about 15 years I downloaded 8.2 and started fooling around with Lost Victories. Those first few turns were a bit of a struggle at first, trying to get back into the game, wondering if it's worth it...but now I'm having lots of fun with it. This should last a little while. :)

Just wondering though....I'm 3 battles in and the scoring is a little weird. It seems predisposed to handing out draws. In battles 1-2 I thought that I should have been handed a loss but got 2 draws. In battle 3, I kicked a bit of butt and should probably have got some sort of win, but it was yet another draw. Looks like you have to play a somewhat insane, unrealistic and lucky game to get a win in this thing.

Something very frustrating happened in my last game. What do you do when you have a stack of 10 or so Russian units in a forest hex right next to a victory location that you've cleared??? You can't move into the victory hex without getting pounded. You can't move next to that huge stack at all without your single unit getting pounded. And you can't hit them from a distance because they're surrounded by forest. Is this extreme stacking something that got added somewhere along the line....back when I used to play SP in the early days, I think there used to be a max of 2 units per hex, but now it seems to be 3 and even more when broken units and vehicles come into play.

Also, are all battles 15 turns long? I can't seem to get a display of game length no matter what I do...hovering the cursor in the top right doesn't seem to work in the Mega Campaign even though it does for some standalone scenarios that I've tried.

Don't know if this has been discussed before, but did anything ever come of the Operation Husky Mega Camapaign, which I think was the first attempt back before Matrix existed. What was the company called that used to do lots of 3rd party SP scenarios? Novastar? David Landrey.

Just keep fighting.  To handle a big stack of Russians hiding in the forest you have 2 choices:

1) Do what 98% of by-the-book armchair generals do and bombard it senseless so they can't fight back.  Then go in for your one-sided turkey shoot.
2) Deal with them the real man's way and send in wave after wave until one of their ambush attempts fails and you pop 'em or the Russians 'stop for a breather' and let up their fire.  Then you smoke em hard with something heavy like a mobile arty firing at point blank or use a flamethrower.

Note:  #2 is a lot more fun
