Crawling Green Horde VS Soaring White Eagle

Post by Goblin »

Ok, Orzel Bialy (White Eagle in Polish) and I are gonna go at it. We're doing a monster 10,220 point battle, on Wild Bill's 'Winter City' map. The date is November, 1942. I'm the Germans, he is the Russians. We have the usual settings for one of my battles (post a question if you are wondering about something), only we agreed at 20% arty max, instead of 15%. It is a cold dawn battle. I do not remember what visibility was, and I will let you know, plus I will post the weather report. Our local weather girl Helga Hailstorm is out with the flu....

I purchased my stuff probably 5 times, then erased it all, and did a sixth, then seventh, then I erased it all and went super basic. Keep It Simple Stupid!

Orzel should be along shortly with a comment.

A Learning Experience....

Post by Orzel Bialy »

is how I'm going to look at this little gem. :)

Goblin has been kind enough to make it a dawn battle and not the dreaded night fight that he excels at...so I'm not exactly taking him on under his terms.;)
I too picked my forces four times before settling for what I will take to battle now. Hope it's the right blend...or this is going to be a short ride! :D

This is the battle that I knew was going to happen one day...after I got some rounds under my belt. Two battles (and a third in progress) with Hellcat have given me plenty of practice and the taste of stress under fire...so here it goes.

Hope everyone enjoys the ride! ;)

Ok you little green thing....let's rumble!

Watch for 'Bossa Tank'; I'm gonna change the name of one to it. It'll be me, Major Goblin inside. Make a pretty White tank, complete with down pillows for yourself!

Ok, Orzel opening barrage smoked most of the east-west roads in the center of the city. My opening barrage-a massive salvo of 150mm-slammed into the city, hitting....Mines! Lots of them.

I used a coupla scouts to confirm and find out how widespread their use is... It appears they are all over. Hmmmm.

No action yet.

Wow...Tigers already!

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Goblin is testing me already...Tigers to the north and Pz IV's to the south....and big time arty blasts!

Ok...minefield detected by arty...hmmm, never heard of that but I guess that's war. ( Some people use airdrops to no end...so I use mines to counter that threat. Maybe there should be some limits imposed on the use of both?)

Anyway...not a lot of shooting that first round...just some scooting! :)

I killed three tanks, but I lost two to mines. They aren't even dense fields, so scouts are useless, as they pass over them, then here comes a tank, BOOM!

Keep bringing your T34's out to play, Birdy, 'cause I ain't coming in no more!:D

Hmmm....killed one....

Post by Orzel Bialy »

and lost one.

However, on the bright side, I managed to get several of my beautiful "Russian Rata's" (T-34's) to scurry off past the crouching Tigers that were waiting for them...and disappear into the woods. Now all I have to do is wait for those Kitties to turn and chase these "rats" and then "POW"....kick them in the backside! Ah the power of smoke-screens!:)

Outside of that...I taught a motorcycle unit a lesson in barrelling down city streets. You never know what you might find when you do that....hee hee hee.

Well...let's see what happens next. I see a pretty line of tanks to the south, but they don't seem to be doing much. The fear of God must have taken hold....or the fear of HE filled disks that is.

Back to you my Green Friend.

Orzel has managed to hit two of my pet peeves so far. One, mines. Two, Russian players buying the M10 Wolverine. I know its on the list, but anyone who has played someone doing this understands what I mean.... Where's the Sherman? Or the Matildas?

Anyways, I am in a general withdrawal. The easiest way to not lose units to mines is go away from the mines. I bonked one of his northern T34's, but did not kill it. It's with the force that drove down the north map edge. Why does everyone try that with me? You would think word would spread...:DMy arty has been largely ineffective., despite some heavy hitters. C'mon Birdy, got an 88mm cracker for you....

Never Ending Arty is what.....

Post by Orzel Bialy »

I seem to be facing...for the love of God.

Let's see...knocked off one Pz IV on the north side...had two kitties lined up for side shots and missed! Arrhhhhhh!!! That was what I had been looking for! Damned Russian gunners...chance to put the hurt on two Tigers and they miss!

Outside of that...some movement elsewhere...but I'll leave that for Goblin to see and tell.

Back to you my friend....hey, is there a third peeve that I can hit? :D

A KV (1C) is now dead. There are a few minor infantry fights breaking out as our forces get closer. Mostly I continue to withdraw. No engineers....

Now, now, gentlemen....

Post by Orzel Bialy »

I took the only a couple bty's of them to provide long distance AT support...originally this is. :D
The other 95% of my stuff is good, ole fashion, Russian heavy hitters. ;)
Besides, the lend-lease Shermans stink on ice (sorry Jess) :D and while the waltzing matildas armor is ok (for taking on Pz III's and early model Pz IV's) the main gun sucks. I'd have to be drunk to choose either one of those when I knew Tigers were going to be in the fray. ;)
Gee, wonder whats going to be said when my lend lease B-17's come in to carpet bomb the next turn? :p

I lost another AFV to mines. It had been parked there for three turns, and I went to move it-BOOM! It had been parked in a minefield. I lost a PzIV to a hit by an enemy tank.

Paybacks! My Flammpanzers charge out of cover! My PzIV's attack! My Tigers shoot alot, but don't do much!!

I claim 2 Wolverines, 3 KV 1C's (maybe 2), a BA64 scout car, and a T34-42. DIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIE you commie mine-planting, vodka-drinking, cold weather-loving, massive armor-using, funny fur-hat wearing, potato-eating bastards!!!!

Thats the coveted 5 War Faces award of the Goblin! (you had me laughing when I saw that!)

Nothing really happened....
moved around some units from the rear areas....and tried to dogde those big Kitties up north for another turn or so....oh yeah, just as the sun comes up in the east and sets in the west: the Green One's "never-ending arty" continued to rain down upon my forces.
And...you'll be happy to hear that a Wolverine picked off a PzIV at long range!

One of the center victory hexes started just behind Orzels lines, and he mined the hexes themselves. You asked, Orzel, there's pet-peeve number three.

I killed a T34, thats about it. I cannot move ANYWHERE past the halfway point on the map. I will have to win via points! Bring it on White Canary!

(Just how many points did you spend on mines, out of curiousity?)

SKI TROOPS ARE UTTERLY AND COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY WORTHLESS!!!!!!!

You wouldn't think so on a map called 'Winter City', but they cannot clear mines (that I knew), and will not close assault tanks (that I did not know)!

Another slow round. Orzel is starting to hit me with more and more armor, and I fully plan on hitting right back!
