WITP vs. UV

Post by Charbroiled »

I'm an experienced WITP player and I am thinking about getting UV, but I have some questions:

1. Is the AI any good in UV?
2. What are the major differences between WITP and UV (other then the size of theater).
3. How long do the turns take in UV on a standard CPU (to execute, not giving orders).
4. Any MAJOR bugs in UV?

Thanks in advance.

Since its the same engine, the AI is as good/bad as in WitP, but it appears to play better because UVs scenarios/campaigns are shorter and the theatre is smaller. In the short scenarios the AI can prove challenging, but most experienced players consider solo play a training tool.

No production in UV; you get what you get when you get it, although you can increase ship availability to 200%.

Although the files are smaller than WitP, UV turns can take longer as a campaign progresses. You can adjust the duration of time for sightings, messages, etc., to help the turn move along.

Comprehensive patch 2.5 has pretty much eliminated major bugs, but some players are looking to CF for a more perfect product.

Thanks for the input Joe.

I'll probably pull the trigger and get UV. Looking for something to pass the time between PBEM WITP turns.

UV is excellent to play in between WITP PBEM turns, but you'll soon find yourself tossing the AI in favor of PBEM with UV too.

There is no perfect product.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

I really didn't expect the AI to be anything great. Programing the AI for something of this magnitude would be quite an undertaking.

Thanks for the help guys.[&o]

I play CaW in between UV PBEM turns!

Almost forgot: CF (Carrier Force) is like CaW grafted on the UV engine; I don't know how far along CF development is, but you might consider waiting to buy it instead.

I'm an experienced WITP player and I am thinking about getting UV, but I have some questions:

1. Is the AI any good in UV?

I think Joe answered this pretty well. Same as in WITP, perhaps a little better because it´s a smaller theatre.
2. What are the major differences between WITP and UV (other then the size of theater).

The scale of the map. I think in WITP the map scale is 60 miles per hex. In UV it´s 30 miles per hex. This gives the game a much closer tactical feel than in WITP. In my own opinion it is also easier to make bad moves and overlook things in UV because of this.

3. How long do the turns take in UV on a standard CPU (to execute, not giving orders).

On mine, much faster than in WITP. In WITP it´s, checking oil transfers, checking damaged ships, checking this, checking that, can´t remember the exact wording but it´s a while and ZZZZZZZZZ. In UV the AI is much faster. Hmmmm, a minute, maybe.
4. Any MAJOR bugs in UV?

Some. There is a Japanese Battleship withdrawal bug I´ve read about that can happen in the early months of the game. Never experienced it, but it´s known.

Also there is a bug about taking Shortlands islands while enemy ships are in port. If I remember right the ships don´t sink as there supposed to or something like that. Never personally experienced this one either but it´s known also.

The Allied replay does not match, many times, exactly what happened in the turn. Although the combat report seems accurate always.

All in all, from what I´ve seen bugs are rare though.

I tend to switch back and forth between the South Pacific scenario in WITP and the main campaign in UV.

My question is which has the more accurate OOB? In UV, the allies seem to have plenty of transports, where in the WITP scenario, I can run seriously short of them.

Re lack of transports in WitP: Could it be a matter of relativity? UV is a much smaller theater than the entire PTO.

It sounds like UV will be a good game for me to get, but I think I'll wait for Carrier Force.

Does anyone have any idea on the release date?

CF isn't even listed in the Matrix "coming soon/under development" forums, but you can see from various other threads its obviously under development.

As for the date ...

I played UV before WitP and really enjoyed it...I just went with WitP to increase the depth of the deep end...[:D]. Uv is enough like WitP to be enjoyable but it isn't as much of a monster.

I was referring to scenario 4, using just the "UV" section of the main map running from 5/42 - 2/43

OK, you're referring to the "UV scenarios" in WitP.

Ya most everyone I have seen has gone UV -> WitP. Curious to see how WitP -> UV  feels with the tighter scope and overall simpler gameplay. I am normally turned off when I dig a complex game and go down a notch. I would figure that people who stick around beyond the 2nd or 3rd turn are a) seriously disturbed and b) enjoy taming monsters.

Yep. I've been a bit chicken to do the full Monty in WITP. The Philippine-NEI-DEI section makes my head spin a bit, trying to determine the flow of men and materials in that particular corner. One of these days I'll work that small scenario, and maybe move on to the full campaign.

I like the fact that one doesn't have to "babysit" the air groups as much as in UV, with fatigue and such. With UV, I like the smaller sized hexes. That's probably the big reason I'm looking forward to AE.

Usually, I would feel the same....don't like starting with the "full meal deal", then start playing the "appetizer". However, I still remember "Carrier Strike", which was the prequel to Pacwar, and it was a very enjoyable game by itself. Seeing as how all of these games are from the same person......

The problem I have playing solo with WITP isn't so much the poor AI, it is the loooooooong time it takes for the AI to do it's turn. I like playing early in the mornings and I keep falling asleep waiting until the combat starts.[:D]

at least WiTp seems a lot more playable than the tabletop version. Still, I think it's a choice between one WiTp game or 4 UV
