So, I was thinking. How many mission classifications would there need to be?
Direct support, attacking targets that can be seen by ground units. Flown by ground support aircraft only. Air units allocated prior to the start of the game.
Interdiction, attacking targets behind front line units, against specific units, but out of sight of the front line units. Flown by any aircraft type. Interdiction missions should be preplotted, limited area, prior to the start of the game.
General support, attacking area targets in the rear area's where either formations are seen deploying, or suspected. Flown by any aircraft type. Air reconnaissance reports required at the start of the game and plotted out on the level three or four map without the ground units on them, just a description of their presence. A hex area attack instead of a unit in-the-hex attack!

Well my original thought was to critique the existing model, but I like the way you think!
I definitely like the idea of air reconnaissance missions where one could try to spot enemy units.
Interdiction could be declared at the beginning of the game for specific air units such that when the enemy is expending moving points and is spotted there is a slight possibility of being attacked by an air unit 'on station'. Once an aircraft is designated for interdiction mode it is locked into that for the remainder of the game.
An air strike in a 250m hex should be area fire for HE; if AP, it is directed fire at one target designated from a priority list.
