Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

EXCELLENT! Unbelievable for me, but Swift only had a HQ, an anti tank unit and a small tank regiment behind his Army even though he could see my TK rgts marching cross country to cut him off. All the air attacks so far hit us hard but with only 50 assault points I wonder if he thought he could stop us. Our TK rgts are now marching on Charter Towers with two divs still having order to cut the enemy Army off towards the South.

Charter Towers is defended by 4 base forces, the TK rgt that was forced to retreat a couple of days ago and an AA rgt. 5 of my TK rgts showed an assault value of 0!! [X(] during the replay, this is from the endless air attacks and only 4 TK rgts had a very low av which leads to a 1:1. The bad news here is that we spotted an enemy unit coming down from Cairns now which will open the path for the enemy Army to retreat on the railway back to Charter Towers. If my tanks won´t be able to take the base (which I seriously doubt) then our offensive has failed and we will retreat North in the near future. This also means that Allied LBA alone made my offensive fail. Which means also that those couple of hundred bombers saved the whole continent from being lost. [X(]

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

I was absolutely surprised that the enemy resistance collapsed today! Some 40 units retreated North, China is decimated to Chungking, Yunan and Chengtu. Though in fact I only took 4 or 5 bases in whole China by force as all other bases were abandoned by Swift (including the whole North of China). The good news: KUNMING´S RESOURCE CENTER (300) IS COMPLETELY UNDAMAGED! [&o][&o] As this resource center was the reason for our offensive here, we see it as a 100% success! The Allied lost some 140 points for ground losses today, we lost 10.

and here´s the development around Johnston Island: ENEMY INVASION FLEET SPOTTED! I´m pretty sure that this is the upcoming invasion but we will know for sure next turn if those TFs move slowly towards Johnston. Perhaps those TFs are just half a dozen bombardment TFs that are now operating under CV cover (we spotted CV Wasp). Could be plausible also when I look at their position because when they went in directly from Pearl the last times we saw those 9 Betty attacks that failed to locate the TFs. This should have made Swift more carefully... [8|]

KB is in position with the search planes only set to 2 hexes range as there are several US subs West of Johnston and I don´t want to give Swift intel about my TF in this region. My Betties at Palmyra are set to 11 hexes (they´ve got 54 Zeroes as escorts) as this is the range from Palmyra to Johnston and so we should be able to attack the invasion TF with escorts as cover. Hopefully we will be able to locate the enemy TFs this time, when they even will be at our own base. We will try to wear down the Allied CV fighters a bit with LBA and then send in KB. If we send KB in, we expect heavy losses though as even without a single enemy fighter left, the bombers will mostly get through to bomb our CVs.

I have sent I-21 (that has lost her Glen to carrier born fighters) into the hex with the enemy invasion fleet and she sinks an AK. Parts of the 25th USA division drowned. Swift told me that he´s hit by the ship movement bug and all those TFs don´t move at all, so I told him I won´t send anymore subs into this hex. Swift sent in his old BBs and this time we launch a strike from Palmyra! Out of 126 torp bombers there, 49 decide to attack this super high value TF. Still, we manage to sink BB Mississippi and to damage 3 more BBs. With BB Colorado damaged earlier by a sub we already have damaged 4 BBs in the fight for Johnston. The goal why I took all those bases far out of our main defensive line in the Pacific was to inflict losses within every Allied attempt to retake them. We don´t have them heavily garrisoned but enough troops to damage every counterattack. Taking Johnston was obviously worth it as I´m already yet really satisfied with the damage we have done and the invasion hasn´t even took place yet. We lose a dozen bombers to flak today, half a dozen pilots are lost.

Swift told me that he had ordered P40-B from Frechn Frigate Schoals on LRCAP (6 hexes) and he can´t understand why there weren´t any fighters over his BBs. Well, I can: P40-B normal range is 5 hexes and LRCAP can only be flown within normal range! [;)] Even with some 20+ P-40B over the BBs, they would have never been enough to prevent the slow battlewaggons from this disaster.

Second Allied BB sunk since the beginning of hostilities! IJN torpedoe bombers sink USS Mississippi off Johnston Island while damaging three other US BBs with torpedoes! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

USS Mississippi (BB-41, later AG-128), 1917-1956

USS Mississippi, a 32,000 ton New Mexico class battleship, was built at Newport News, Virginia. She was commissioned in December 1917, and operated in the western Atlantic area until July 1919, when she transited the Panama Canal to the Pacific. Over more than a decade, she operated with the fleet's other battleships, conducting exercises and training operations in the Pacific and in the Caribbean. During gunnery practice on 12 June 1924, she suffered a turret fire that took the lives of 48 of her crew. Mississippi steamed to Australia on a U.S. Fleet good will tour in mid-1925.

During 1931-33 , Mississippi underwent a major modernization that gave her an all-new superstructure, improved armament and enhanced protection. She returned to the Pacific in October 1934 to resume her earlier pattern of regular exercises, Fleet Problems and training. In June 1941, in response to the deteriorating war situation in Europe, she was brought back to the Atlantic, operating between the United States and Iceland during much of the rest of that year.

In early 1942, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Mississippi rejoined the Pacific Fleet. She spent most of 1942 along the U.S. west coast and went to the South Pacific late in that year. In 1943, she took part operations against Kiska Island, in the Aleutians, and in the capture of the Gilbert Islands. During the latter operation, on 29 November 1943, Mississippi experienced another turret explosion, which took 43 lives. Following repairs, she participated in the capture of Kwajalein in February 1944 and bombarded Japanese-held islands in February and March. Later in the year, she was part of the force that invaded Peleliu and Leyte and defeated a Japanese task force in the Battle of Surigao Strait. Mississippi provided gunfire support for the Lingayen landings in January 1945 and for the conquest of Okinawa in March-June. The battleship was damaged by suicide planes in both operations. She was present in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945, when Japan formally surrendered and returned to the United States soon thereafter.

Mississippi was converted to a gunnery training and weapons development ship in 1946, and given the new hull number AG-128. In this role, she carried a variety of old and new guns and radars, while serving with the Operational Development Force in the Atlantic. During the mid-1950s, she was test ship for the Navy's first surface-to-air guided missile, the "Terrier". Decommissioned in September 1956, USS Mississippi was sold for scrapping in November of that year, after almost forty years of service.

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

deliberate attack yesterday achieved a 1:1, our troops are 80% prepped for Alice Springs have full supply, 90+ exp and are not more than 30 disrupted, yet the Allied forces here seem to have no problems at all to force our units to retreat, losing all of their supply, 20% of their troops dead and another 10% disabled. [:(] I lose over 100 points for ground losses today! More than amazing, lower exp units with a lower assault value achieve a 2:1. I just can´t believe those borked ground combat results that WITP brings up. Getting even more angry when I see another 3500 assault points in Australia being stuck at 59 miles due to some kind of ground movement bug. Ground combat may be strange in WITP but ground movement has been completely bugged since some patch around 1.5 and it seems it was never looked at since then. It´s a pity.

we will see the invasion going in tomorrow. But now look at the CV TFs! Swift is still using Devastators, even though he must have enough Avengers! Hard to understand but that´s fine with me. Same as in Burma where he still is using Buffalos even though he has more than enough Hurricanes and Spitfires.

and here comes our first strike against the invasion from Palmyra. Enemy CVs still 2 hexes North of Johnston and our bombers are still set to 11 hexes range to have escorts. We don´t launch all 126 bombers but still we further work on the Allied disaster! Those two CAs should be in real trouble now. We also downed nearly two dozen high experienced Allied CV fighter pilots. Excellent, but our bomber and fighter pilots are racking up fatigue really fast at this range.

our CD units seem to be suppressed by the enemy CAs but at least over 1000 enemy troops are disabled form the landing... I have to say that the invasion timetable seems to be planned poorly by Swift´s admirals as this is already in the last phase during the afternoon and I highly doubt that he was able to unload everything at once! Plays in our cards! [8D]

and here comes the shock attack! Only 60% of a US division is unloaded! What was Swift thinking that I have at Johnston? I consider 250 assault points not as a super high garisson, but he seems to really underestimated my strenght here! One division not being unloaded in one turn and a couple of support units will never take Johnston. This invasion (if not heavily reinforced) will fail - it won´t just be a disaster, it will completely fail with the forces on hand at the moment!

Air losses for today. Excellent, for the damage done!

next BB damaged! If I would play as the Allied I would call it already yet a disaster. 1 BB sunk and half a dozen more damaged already! [X(]

Ive just got to ask...if you call that a disaster, then what did you call the Darwin operation? Please please let me read your AAR [;)]
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..

I lost two BBs and that was exactly called: A DISASTER!

You will see within the next posts that Swift takes far more losses than I did at Darwin. And to recall the Darwin operation: if my CVs would have moved the 6 hexes instead of 4 (out of 8 for what reason ever) then I would have called it a big Allied victory, sinking 3 IJN CVs for nearly no loss, but the god of WITP, the dices, luck or whatever prevented my CVs from moving 80% of what they could move. So... feel glad that it went the way it went...

but besides that, should I post the intel screen and the whole map to make me feel fine again, when I compare the intel and map from my Japanese game against Swift to my Allied game against you? [;)]
